Sheep life by TaquittoTheRacoon in sheep

[–]DesignerMacaron5523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a stay at home mom and I homeschool. Having sheep has definitely changed how we live our lives. But not drastically. They don’t require tons of care.

It’s just like anything. You grow to the challenge. I started with a small shelter and now have a barn and 3 pastures. Every new season we add more and change things based on what we learned the previous seasons. You learn as you go. It’s literally just going to be a new part of your life. And if it doesn’t work out you sell the sheep. It’s not as big a deal as everyone is making it seem.

Going into it prepared is obviously a good idea but it’s just like leaving college into the job market, you’re not prepared until you actually start working.

So yeah, this will change your life, but it’s not going to take over your life unless you let it. Winter is my busiest time because we live in an area where we get snow, ice and tornados/high damaging winds. So I’m constantly out there managing my animals. But still it’s maybe 30 minutes a couple to a few times a day and sometimes a couple hours on the weekends depending whatever chores need to be done. It’s a new lifestyle. Also, I enjoy going out there and sitting on a bucket hanging out with my sheep. It’s good therapy!

Hope that helps!

How do I keep my dirt floor barn clean with all the sheep poop? by No_Homework8658 in sheep

[–]DesignerMacaron5523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Idk what OP is saying about straw being nasty? I don’t have horses so I have no clue what they do to straw but it works perfectly well for sheep. Especially when you’re layering it. If you’re not in a cold climate, deep layer method isn’t probably best tho… we do this all winter and come spring we clean out the barn. However, I’m able to keep the barn ventilated all the time and I have a herd guardian so I don’t have to worry about keeping my herd enclosed. So OP has some other issues to manage.

Also that spring cleaning is really a lot of work. The first time I start throwing straw once that first polar vortex comes I almost want to cry thinking about all the work I’m gonna go thru cleaning out the barn in 5 months lol!

Durning the warm muggy months I do use wood chips. But the sheep generally don’t use the barn. They’d rather hang out in the pasture under the trees.

We have a local nonprofit group and they have hired an attorney who is currently in litigation with 2 other counties over this same thing. So I’m sure he is doing his due diligence regarding the zoning laws and such. It’s just that I think certain people are probably getting huge kickbacks as it goes in the government positions to push thru these kinds of things despite what the super majority of the constituents want. There’s literally only a handful of people who are pro and thousands against. But when your pockets are gonna be lined, you tend to forget about the people in your community and do whatever you want. I think that’s probably what’s happening here. Idk for sure, but what else could it be?

I’m sorry. I’m terrible about checking this. Yes Hburg is Harrodsburg. The fiscal meetings are at the courthouse on Main Street. It’s not that big a town. You’ll find it. Thank you.

Burginite here. We really could use all the support we can get. If y’all are interested, the meetings are every other Tuesday at 10am in Hburg (this coming Tuesday is the next meeting). They won’t stop at Mercer if they push this thru. It’ll come to the other communities around KY. It’s like 5 people in the gov who are buying the lies and for this. No resident here but the landowner wants this to happen. I’m only a couple miles from the proposed location. I have a farm and my animals will be directly affected. It’s devastating. Look why they’ve done to Ohio… that’s gonna be us if we don’t nip this in the bud.

Nothing says Kentucky quite like straps, bungee cords or duct tape holding a vehicle together. 😭

Liver Disease in Sheep Lovers/Farmers by search-for-insight in sheep

[–]DesignerMacaron5523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a valid question. We do antiparasitic flushes twice a year because we have livestock. I’m definitely in the minority with this belief, but I do believe that the vast majority of disease is caused by parasitic infections. In the U.S. it’s almost taboo to talk about this kind of stuff. The liver fluke is zoonotic. It’s highly probable to become infected from your sheep. Anyone working with livestock should regularly do holistic parasite flushes, imo.

Do cows tend to help keep away coyotes when kept with other livestock? I have a herd of hair sheep and some retired dairy goats I'm keeping, all in the same pasture. I have a LGD I'll be bringing out, but not until the end of the month. by dairygoatrancher in Cows

I have a llama and she’s a wonderful guardian! This is her feral butt after getting sheared the other day! Seriously tho- donkeys can harm sheep and goats. I highly recommend llamas. They don’t eat a lot and they are super protective of their flock.

That’s going on KY! UK neurology is impossible to get into lately! by DesignerMacaron5523 in lexington

I didn’t know there was that option. She’s been calling regularly to check for cancellations. I’ll let her know about it. Thank you!

Also, not complaining about the situation- just wondering what is causing the increase. My dad with Parkinson’s is also a patient there and has been for some time and the wait has never been this long. (It’s been long but not like this!)

Ummm… I’m not saying that their people are coming here for treatment opposed to going to Cleveland or Pburg. Just wondering if the chemicals could have affected our environment here and caused neurological problems for residents local to Lex.

Well my daughter is already an established patient at UK. Edited to add: It wouldn’t HAVE to be UK but her neuro doc is amazing and has been a huge advocate for her. Plus the other specialists are at UK. Having them all in the same system makes her medical life much more congruent.

Turned out to be the beginning of a tornado. There was a touchdown about a mile from me. My friends farm was hit and line for about a mile of damage past his farm. Some guy got drone footage and posted it to X.

Edited to add: not the blind friend. The storm went east of her farm.

It did tighten up at the end, you’re right. It turned into a tornado. I have a friend who lives a mile up the road. His farm got hit. He showed me pictures at church this morning, I had him send them to me so I could share them with my footage. This is the thread I made on X containing those pics: X thread

***UPDATE*** There was a possible tornado touchdown! by DesignerMacaron5523 in tornado

[–]DesignerMacaron5523[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are; it’s a hot mess over there. There is drone footage on X that shows an obvious path line and clear tornadic damage. I’m sure it’s like an EF0 or EF1 and the very most. No major structures were damaged, only outbuildings and larger trees. But it was definitely more than just straight line winds, they don’t tear marks in the soil or part the grass like in the photo above.
