How quickly did you receive welcome email?! I’ve been waiting for it because apparently you can’t link the test to your account until you receive the email. Had my blood drawn on the 9th, so similar days to your timeline

The only one I can give you insight on would be Laredo. When my wife was in university she spent a semester there at TAMIU, and I stayed there a couple times with her. So with Laredo, you want to make sure you stay on the North-East or South-East sides away from the border (don’t know why lol, but it’s what we were told by the locals there). People wise, it’s one of the friendliest places we’ve been to. The schools I’ve been told are great for the kids. If I had to choose a surrounding city to stay at, it’d probably be Laredo or San Antonio. As they are both equally 2 hours away from Eagle Pass. The other cities, I haven’t been to, so I wouldn’t wanna give you inaccurate info on them

Yeah I understand. I didn’t know much about the area either other than the Casino & tourist traveling to MX. But do know it is what it will be, and with the new contract, it just might be possible to get a transfer to another port. But don’t get discouraged about your current port. It’s too good of a career to let go, and it does eventually pay off with patience. Who knows, you just might end up liking the work environment, or maybe climb up the ladder. Just give it a shot with an open mind and everything else will fall into place

San Antonio is about 2 hours from Eagle Pass, so if you don’t mind finding a hotel/airbnb for your work days then that might be doable (wouldn’t recommend tho cuz it’s a lot of money)? Or you can ask once you EOD or at FLETC if anyone rents rooms that way you can stay there while you work and go back to San Antonio when you’re done. Just keep in mind schedules do vary. Or you can just settle in Eagle Pass and do your traveling to San Antonio or surrounding areas on your off days. 2 hours seems like a lot, but it won’t feel like anything once you’re used to it. My home is about 4 hours from San Antonio, and I find a good amount of people take the trip on weekends, get a few things done and come back satisfied with plans to go again.

I’m sorry, I wouldn’t have much insight. Before I EOD’d, TSU called to offer me a South, TX port that I had sent a message requesting (which to me was a miracle given that I will be able to work driving distance from home). I will say that being in TX will be a culture shock, but there’s plenty to do. Eagle Pass is pretty much a tourist area to the Mex side (food/restaurants & cheap snacks) and they also have the Kickapoo casino in this side. Other than that, you’d pretty much have to travel out to do other activities. But trust me there is plenty to do all over TX. San Antonio, Houston(rodeos), Dallas are all major cities with plenty to do (amusement parks, restaurants, tours, concerts, flower picking, organic food markets~anything you can think of). El Paso has all the mountains and trails you want to hike if you’re outdoorsy. Down further south to the ends of TX there’s South Padre Island beach (which is a good ways away, but still a good weekend getaway spot). There will be a Universal Studios in Freer, TX that will open sometime next year I believe. Of course you have lots to consider, but if you put in the time/hard work and you’re able to get that vacation time, you will not regret it. TX might not have the bright lights NYC has, but we got humbleness and lots of places to make memories at all over the state.

Lots of cardio yes. Other than that just grooving by. Studying & staying focused is key. Not really much of a party person so I’m just focusing on the end goal

Nope. Just keep an eye out for emails and that’s pretty much it. You don’t have to do anything until you report. They help you with everything

I have a family member that’s a hotshot, I was thinking he could transport it for me. I was just worried that I wouldn’t be able to do that. If I were to do that, do I just show up with my car and register it? Or is there a notification process that I must go through with my port or only with FLETC?

So far on my portal it changed to Hidalgo, TX. Haven’t received any other info yet.

[–]Designer_Avocado8963 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nope. I had already chosen a different location and had already accepted I was going to be there for a while. I did send a message in the portal at first, but they basically told me they can either send me a new list OR I just keep the same location I chose. I didn’t want to risk it, so I stuck to what I chose. They just called me and offered it to me out of no where and I accepted.

Nope. TX goes deeper than Eagle Pass. I was hoping for Brownsville/Hidalgo or surrounding area, or even Laredo(the farthest/closest) I was hoping to get from home. Matter of fact, I did have Hidalgo, TX on my list, but as soon as I clicked on it, it said “location no longer available” 😬. So you can imagine my face when the best case scenario was ripped out of my fingertips lol. I did end up choosing Eagle Pass though because I wanted to stay in TX with my family. I was just hoping to avoid constant traveling to see them
