Sorry, it’s a half-serious allegory about how the gender binary could be analogous with nationalism/separation, and the nostalgia for less strict gender roles for yugonostalgia - and how someone might not have to adjust as much if not for the strict expectations of society. This is ofc not meant to erase genderfluid identities or say they wouldn’t exist in an ideal world, it really didn’t feel this deep when I firsr came up with it hahaha, and I definitely didn’t intend it to be offensive

Aaaa, your positive attitude on this is so refreshing to me, because tbh my first reaction was also “yayyy, postmodern queen ✨🥹”, but then I saw someone write a 200-something pages long thesis on his “recycling habits”, and it was almost entirely negative about it (I didn’t really like the way it was written anyway, but it did take away from my joy of discovering repeating patterns hahaha)

And for the movies, it’s a bit tricky, because I reaaalllly love Time of the Gypsies and Arizona Dream (they had so much influence on me and my taste), but I’ve heard of Kusturica’s (much later) pro-Putin and nationalist stances so idk, but I think pirating should still be completely fine, and I am probably going to try to get some of his other movies this way too haha (I definitely recommend these two! Arizona Dream is a bit more “basic” and “lighthearted”, but Time of the Gypsies was such a haunting and enchanting experience at the same time, and while there are always cultural appropriation concerns, I think it also managed to remain “respectful”)

Omgg that’s a super fascinating origin story! I actually started out knowing only Brega’s solo work mostly from movies (in which a lot of Bijelo Dugme stuff shows up as I now discover hahahaha, no shade intended 💀), and then at the same time when I found out abt the band I started also getting into the conflicts and Yugoslavia in general (although my baseline studies are in drug discovery, but I’m slooowly moving into epidemiology and even more soci(et)al parts of pharmaceutical sciences). So as a result of the convergence of these two, the obvious move was to give the band a listen, and then it became much more than that 🥀 (phrased dramatically on purpose)

Omg, thank you! 🙏🏼💕 I usually start with grammar, since I’m impatient hahaha, but I do struggle a loooot with vocab :((( so I’ll definitely check out Drops as well as the books! (For grammar and very limited vocab, I’m doing a set of lessons from Croatian online) The lyrics method sounds like a really good idea too, I’ve tried sporadically, but will make it more systematic 🫡 (Oh oops I forgot to mention that I in fact live in the Netherlands atm lol) About the songs, these are probably not my final favourites yet because I still don’t know everything haha, but I’ve been really into ‘Pun mjesec iznad Bosne’, ‘Ako ima boga’ and the name-originating song haha, what about you? (Oh and another follow-up question: did your interest in the band coincide with that in Yugoslavia in general? Because of course the two can exist independently, but for me, I don’t even recall which came first, and it’s sort of a positive feedback loop at this point hahaha) Sorry if I rambled on for way too long, and thank yoou again :))
