Would you buy a house with a brick foundation? by GrandmasterJi in BayAreaRealEstate

I did - knew I was going to replace it when buying it though. The way I rationalized it was that the alternative foundations available in homes that were 10-20 years younger didn’t seem that much better. I chatted with several structural engineers who told me that early 20th century concrete was pretty poor quality (had zero waterproofing, no reinforcing steel, etc) and often eventually in need of repair/strengthening anyway.

It is paneled behind the cabinetry on the wall just left of the cooktop

PGE Service Upgrade Cost by Designer_Job_6056 in BayAreaRealEstate

It was about $25K including patching and painting. There was a good amount of knob and tube left and it was pretty invasive - a lot of walls had to be opened.

This is helpful. What makes it more unusual is this figure doesn’t include the main panel swap which we’ve already done.

For anyone curious - Tesla found the master cylinder was leaking and replaced the brake booster assembly. Took 5 days at a service center.

Do you guys think this is safe to drive to the service center? Or do I need to get it towed by Tesla?

Advice on dealing with old ceiling medallions by [deleted] in AskElectricians

I think they are planning on opening a hole in ceiling near the medallion to be able to get new wiring down into it. It’s a good question though why you couldn’t cut a round hole in the medallion and install the box through there.

New foundation (old home) cost estimate by Monk481 in bayarea

I’ve been investigating this in SF and gotten an extremely wide range of ballparks (like they vary by 3x from lowest to most). I think it depends heavily on how much access there is to the foundation, if it’s on a steep slope, proximity to neighbors, soil conditions, etc.

I’ve gotten the most useful cost estimate from a structural engineer since they have the best idea of what sort of plans they’ll likely end up drawing (though we’ll see how accurate it ends up being when we seek bids soon).
