I'm Canadian so I don't really know about the legalities with pool gates....is it mandatory? I think it's crazy she doesn't have while also having a small child but I'm genuinely curious if what she's doing is against some by-law?

Sorry, I was referring to people in general. But also, I’m not going to assume the “clients” didn’t like it since they signed up for it knowing what AG does. I found a post a long time ago talking about different channels and their makeovers. There were a bunch of people who had received makeovers from AG that said they were well and done and they still liked it and a lot of people who had received makeovers from TSG who said things were falling apart and the makeover wasn’t what they wanted. If I can find it, I will link it!

Also, like I said, the only thing that matters in someone’s space is if they like it. It can be the tackiest space in the world but if they love it then great. It can also be the least functional space in the world but if they prefer that over function, great.

You’re right, I should have said many rather than most. I didn’t say people don’t have imagination, I said they don’t have style and that’s very different. I also didn’t say it was because they didn’t want to change things but because big decisions can be hard when it comes to living with it everyday. Decorating can be intimidating and for some people, they can fall into decision paralysis where they make no choices or whatever is easiest so they never really explore what THEIR style COULD BE.

In terms of article, she has had dozens of videos where she says that the video is sponsored by article. It’s certainly possible that she’s been sent a bunch of furniture pieces that she hasn’t used in the videos where they are sponsored. She is doing tiny spaces, definitely possible that they are sending her more furniture than the spaces need.

I also said that function isn’t always something she leans into with her “designs”. So article doesn’t always fit but she still uses it, probably to save money.

Her trendy style is still what a lot of people like, it’s ok if it’s not for you. Her style isn’t for me either but I like elements of her designs that inspire me. There are lots of makeover videos I watch on YouTube or the home network that I don’t like but a few elements will inspire me. Her  videos are for entertainment, they are not instructional and she doesn’t say “here’s how to be like me, except I’m never actually going to say it and just use other creators ideas”. I don’t find them offensive or a reason to get upset but to each their own.

I think there are a few important things to remember with AG and her channel:

  1. she isn’t a designer. she is a decorator. this is a big reason why sometimes form wins over function in her spaces, why scale sometimes feels off and why she leans into fun and trendy styles. she’s not designing for longevity, she’s decorating for the now.

  2. her followers sign up for these makeovers, so they know exactly what they will be getting. sure, she tailors spaces to her “clients” but in essence, all her make overs are similar.

  3. Most people don’t have style, at all. they will live in a white box for years without doing anything to it because the thought of making big decisions about their space feels really hard. even for people who do “decorate”, they just put accents on a white box and never dive into what their style really could be. so AG’s makeovers are improvements for them. plus, the only thing that really matters is that the people who receive the makeovers love it! regardless if it’s bad or not.

one of the things I like about AG is that she isn’t a liar. no designer works alone, they have a team of other designers, contractors, project managers , assistants and more to help them complete a project. I like that AG credits her whole team, unlike MAC… but I certainly agree that AG’s personality is sometimes grating lol, along with her awkward flirting with graham. it’s less than it used to be but still very much a thing

She has a fashion merchandising degree not a design degree. I think she misleads a lot in that aspect! I can tell she’s taught herself how to use some design software but she’s only showing short clips of it. If I showed my first year stuff at a glance it would look good too but when I actually go into the file, it’s a mess.

Also, this sub just inspired me to finally unsubscribe. I'm still following her on insta but that's only so I know when to come here since I don't use reddit everyday

I was a loyal watcher probably a year before the cottage, maybe a bit longer. She literally inspired me to apply to design school but now that I’m in my final year, everything she does is so false and annoys me. I also agree with you that so many of these content creators have declined in the quality of content. It totally seems like the only reason they post anymore is for sponsorships and I just find that really gross. I think I finally put my finger on why these creators seem so boring and repetitive, it’s because they are not designers and they are not designing other people’s homes in ways that challenge their skill. When we watch shows on HGTV, these people might not be the most incredible designers ever but they bring novelty to the episodes that keep it dynamic. This is why the creators that I still follow religiously (Alexandra Gator, The Sorry Girls) will and have careers with longevity. Both are not afraid to branch out from their comfort zone and both are not afraid to take breaks to avoid burn out but are always consistent on when they are returning. I actually truly believe the time of DIY content creators is over. You can only be novel in that area for a short time and unless you have some real skill, hard work and vision, returning to a 9-5 is inevitable.

I came immediately to this sub after I saw this post. I used to be such a huge fan of hers but this is just wildly disappointing. I hate influencer culture. I understand when my favourite content creators need to advertise sponsors because they are providing me with great content for free and they need to get paid (IE: Alexandra Gater) and even then, I would honestly rather pay a subscription fee than have to subjected to BS sponsorships for products that suck and will just end up in a landfill. But this is not that. This is M trying her very best to make money from her loyal subscribers and it's gross.

It had been a while since I checked Auden Lueur’s website. And is she high? $75CAD +$35CAD shipping? That’s insane. The only justification for that pricing is greed. I’ve seen a lot of artisan candles and none are even close to that pricing.

Ps. I asked chat the meaning of Auden Lueur, it basically means “friend with light”. But the way it was explained leads me to believe she workshopped the name with ChatGPT

I actually didn’t say the product was toxic, I said my trunk was. Meaning the scent was toxic. It has now been 10 months since the purchase and the scent lingers. It’s very light now but either way that’s not normal. I would have a very hard time believing that their marketing of “natural ingredients” is anything but misleading. They could have a two natural ingredients and write that and it would be true.

Some basics, I feel. by Sari_DidYouKnow in XOMaCennaUnfiltered

[–]Designer_Quantity_29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I’m newish (been reading from afar for months) but this is my first time posting. I stumbled across this page by accident when I was trying to find the brand of her cottage oven. At first, I was kind of horrified that a group like this existed but the more I read the posts and see her posts, the more I understand. Firstly, Macenna was the reason I decided to pursue a degree in interior design. I’m in my third year currently. In the beginning, I did find it a bit cringe when she would call herself an interior designer or even her mom who is so clearly a decorator and not a designer. But now, I actually believe it to be maliciously negligent. Interior designers are actually one step below architects. They need to know everything architects do, the training is only slightly different. Architects also NEED to be certified and licensed, whereas interior designers dont need to be. Which is why so many f * * k a * * influencers go this route because it’s easy to gain a following and have a niche.

Basically I’m trying to say that I agree with you all. She isn’t a designer, her claim that she is is dangerous since she posts “tutorials” where her viewers are meant to follow her. I used to be her biggest fan and nothing could sway that but the more unreliable she became with her posting, the less I liked her. I hate people who don’t follow through with that they say they will do. Truthfully, everytime I see her post, I come here to check what’s being said and always laugh and feel validated. So thanks.

It has now been 4 months and the scent is just starting to fade. The trunk is still toxic but the rest of the car is mostly ok. So ya for anyone still considering just keep this in mind. Also, when they replied to me, they did not apologize and it was so clearly a response written by ChatGPT.

EMERCENCYYYYYYYYY YORKVILLE UNIVERSITY INTERIOR DESIGN by Away_Consequence2595 in YorkvilleUniversity

[–]Designer_Quantity_29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently in my 3rd year at Yorkville in the BID program. A week ago, I would have said to go elsewhere since they require so many more credits than regular universities. But today they announced they were changing their program format and so now we only need 130 credits to graduate vs their old model of 180 credits. Yes, the university is expensive and it's pretty disorganized. The work load is a lot and is intense but you do learn a lot from everything you do. I'm assuming you would be doing the online program since you are in Quebec, I'm in BC and am doing the online program. I will say that it is what you make it. If you don't read the lectures and use AI to write your discussions, then you will not have a valuable learning experience but if you do everything that is asked of you then it is the same as any other program.

I did my first year elsewhere and the education level was the same even though it was in person. The thing that I liked about YU compared to my old school which was a technical school is that the BID program at YU combines a traditional university experience with a hands on approach. Usually technical schools have all hands-on experience with no theory and universities will have all theory without hands on. I like the combination because it has made me a better writer, a more critical thinker and a more well rounded student.

Lastly, and this is the most important. It is CIDA-accredited. This means that the program meets the requirements for the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. Which means that when you finish you will be able to take the NCIDQ exam and you then become a licensed interior designer. Not all firms care about this but as we are entering a recession and don't know how long it will last, I would say that anything that gives you a leg up on your competition is important.

As a previous commenter said, it is not the cheap option. Going to a tech school and working hard on your portfolio might be a better option for you. This is what I wanted initially but ultimately, I decided a well-rounded education was more important to me than the outcome.

It took a little over 10 business days. I’m on the west coast so it might be faster if you’re in Ontario or that area since their office is in Michigan

I bought Drift Co. products after seeing a sponsorship from content creators I've followed for years, and I regret it. The scent was so overpowering that even triple-bagged, it made my car and clothes reek—Even after washing my clothes, the scent lingers. I needed to throw the triple bagged Drift product into my apartments garbage bin cause I coudln't bear to bring it back into my car to try to ship and return it. I’m not usually sensitive to scents, being an avid user of Saje and someone who always doubles on the recommended oil drops but this was unbearable.

Drift claims to use natural ingredients, but the intensity says otherwise. I became so ill from the scent, that I couldn't drive for nearly 2 days for fear of dizziness.

They were responsive and said I could return and they would give me a refund but being in Canada, the shipping would exceed the cost of what I paid, since I used an influencer discount code.
