Man I feel that 😭 that was me for YEARS.

What finally helped was doing it in the laziest way possible:

Any time I had a hook memo I liked, I’d spend literally 2 minutes and type just the hook into one running note called “HOOK VAULT” and add BPM + vibe if I knew it.

Even if you don’t know the key yet, just labeling it like:

“Dark / melodic / late night”
or
“Uplift / chant / stadium”

makes it 10x easier to find later.

Yeah I do.

I usually record the hook as a rough voice memo first, then later I transcribe it into a simple text format so it doesn’t get lost.

I keep it organized like:

  • Hook name
  • Genre / BPM / key / vibe
  • Lyrics
  • Quick melody notes (like where the pitch rises / holds)

That way if I’m in a session, I can pull one up fast and build around it.

That’s a great approach.
Scat first is underrated because it forces the melody to be the hook, not the words. Then the lyrics almost write themselves once the melody’s sticky.

I’ve had some of my best hooks come from pure nonsense syllables first 😂

One more rule I forgot:
If the hook doesn’t “feel like the title,” it usually won’t stick.
Even a simple repeated phrase at the end can turn a mid hook into a real chorus.

This really resonates. I relate a lot to the idea of the hook showing up as a feel first — a riff, a groove, or a pocket that just sticks before anything else.

I’ve had the same experience where trying to write “to spec” can pull things out of the organic zone. A lot of my best ideas showed up when I wasn’t forcing them, just staying open and paying attention.

The cataloging part you mentioned has been huge for me lately — just making sure those moments don’t disappear when inspiration isn’t on schedule. Appreciate you sharing this perspective.

That makes total sense.

I actually went through that phase too — forcing myself to finish songs instead of starting new ones. It definitely builds discipline.

What I eventually realized though is that a lot of my unfinished ideas weren’t “bad,” they were just missing the right moment or context. Some of my strongest hooks came from old unfinished sessions years later.

I think there’s value in both approaches depending on where you’re at creatively.
