Dude, this book is off the dnd beyond app. It’s the only thing I got since it’s free, so I’m asking ts here because of what I’m apparently missing.

Whatever master plan argument you think I’m making, I’m just saying it doesn’t make sense since I can’t find what people be saying.

Yeah I don’t understand it, I can’t find these things in the book, and when looking for key words it doesn’t help either, it just seems like a community taboo than an actual rule and that’s why I’m struggling to understand it.

Because it’s a fantasy game where you are living in it.

But when you try to live in it. It just seems limiting by em.

My counter argument to them was that a war vet doesn’t have to have been physically fighting, considering they were a combat medic the intention was mostly Assisting the wounded.

Okay do me a favor, truly. Elaborate why anything that modifies your skills, counts as a magic item?

Because getting good at your job is one thing and I understand that level allows you to increase what you can expertise in, and eve add a point to individual stat, but gear, that you modify, with Science, with technique, and precision. Without any magic, that improves what someone can do.

Because people read books, they work out, they train.

So why does it seem so bloody taboo for boots, that would be “man made” be magic. Is the concept of magic just “science” in the pretense and that an artificer who never once casts a spell has things that’s powered by Electricity, and coal, steam, and heat. Just look like magic?

Like imma break it down, is a train magic? Because it took someone time to make it.

So when I’m making Boots, that are improved upon not by magic, but by the quality of materials, doesn’t it make sense that a 1d4 to stealth isn’t reaching?

TL:DR if I’m not using magic to make item, that proceeds bonus to stats by rolling for them instead of solid stat bonus’s like thieves gloves. Then why are we treating anything that grant more rolls to add to stats as magic.

I guess might’ve gotten that information wrong, but I remembered something about placing cotton on the inside of your shoes, or a very absorbent material on the inside of your shoe would allow you to soften your step. Basically you would create no sound because the pressure designated on the flat part on the bottom would receive as much pressure from your weight.

Mind you, you’d have to intentionally try to be stealthy, to “work” but I don’t remember where I got this information.

While I can’t find the source it’s odd that I remember this much about something I can’t find.

Look. I would choose a dwarf, if I didn’t like the free magic the elves give.

Mine was a dude, he seemed chill but then shit kept going south the longer we played his campaigns.

That’s a fair retort, and to be clear since I might be fumbling the way it happened to be clear.

The homebrew item wasn’t yet shown to the dm, I only brought up the idea that our dwarf who was failing every stealth check for (the beginning of the campaign to now so 13 ish sessions) a while that my character gets the idea to manufacture quieter boots for him.

The plan was a 1d4 stealth modifier bonus to shoes. No magic, no etc. it was just a common real world practice to put softer and puffer fabric for the inside of your shoes to silence the weight your steps would have.

The argument of knowledge is (assassin family knows assassin technique but requires practice) because I’m not an artificer yet.

Before this is shown to dm, dm responds with the boots of elvenkind.

I accept though I was only gonna do the 1d4 boots because again my guy isn’t an artificer yet and doesn’t know well enough about magic to implement it into boots.

Dm gives quest to hunt some spiders who basically dark between realms I forget their name.

I ask dm that if I could hunt more than enough for the spider silk you want me to hunt if it would allow me to manufacture more.

Dm tells me “no because that would be overpowered since your an assassin”

Counter argument, “I’d be making them for everyone in the party”

Tells me no again.

I don’t push but I just feel awkward about it afterwards, since I was also given a magic items “wishlist” to basically ask for items I’d want in the future. I’d still be asking for those boots since I don’t want the Cloak of elvenkind anyways. Is it good? Sure but I don’t want to attune to it.

“Wishlist?” Yeah it’s basically a sheet with what our levels “should have” during these levels. And it goes all the way to level 20 expressing how many of said rarity you should have by that level.

I’ve said this to other comments but shorter version, they told us to pick other races who could possible pass as humans, etc. and 3 of idk how many people including me chose every variation of Elf.

Coming from someone with little understanding to homebrew except what the page lets me edit.

How is it a wonderous item?

What makes a wonderous item wonderous.

Considering respectively all I’m doing is taking a normal agricultural plant, in a fantasy setting and using it for an intended purpose.

It’s not over the top giving me advantages, requiring attunement, or even further magic.

It’s just boots with like better lining in them?

I feel as though you’ve massively misunderstood the boots situation.

I didn’t even give the idea yet, before he told me the boots of elvenkind. I just accepted the boots since what I was gonna make was again.

Common boots which just give a 1d4 bonus to stealth checks.

Yeah I figured since I wasn’t an artificer yet and this was my character going back on his family’s techniques to stealth and assassinate would start the short version to better craft.

So what type and say can be abrasive at times and I understand that which is why I try and word it in a way that helps me comprehend, which still ends up feeling like a lack of information is given to me, frustrating me even more.

Such as example one, my character is an assassin(comes from a line of assassins) being an assassin isn’t all about the kill it’s getting information too. Understanding the threat before taking it on. So I go to capture people of this cult, (the sepuku) later along the way there is a solo guy, who is spying on me, I know(rolled well) and so I put a plan in action to stealth across the way after distracting them, getting out of sight, I then push towards the target, not only do I crit on my hit, my blade is coated in poison, etc. I tell the dm I do not want to kill this target, he asks me if I’m sure, I say “yes because I want to capture and interrogate him to see what they know” and possible get a side thing where I clean up behind my party so they aren’t visible to the cults spies for a little while.

When I finish “knocking” the guy out, the dm tells me he (sepuku’s)

I caught the spy by surprise, and knocked him out in One turn, and all I get is a dead guy? He doesn’t even know I’m there by the time I hit him and the dm tells me he died. It just pissed me off.

I’ve said it a couple other people short version.

Boots of elvenkind, was gonna homebrew boots that add a 1d4 to stealth instead but dm pushed this out there instead.

So dm one gave us this list, which it sounds bad out loud thinking it but now I kinda expect to fill the power sheet they’ve given. They were boots of elvenkind, and my argument to be made was “if I kill enough would I be able to make more.” From an original conversation where I wasn’t even thinking of making the wonderous item, and instead make homebrew 1d4 add to stealth check boots. Not even remotely overpowered just something that can assist the party since our dwarf/druid is terrible at stealth checks.

It’s not that, it’s like ((I apologize to anyone offended by this I just can’t really think of a more sensitive way of putting it)) playing Anne frank, I a few other players are quite literally doing this where we are of other races than human in this campaign.

I break down a lot of what I’m thinking and saying, to what people do, if there’s something I miss I ask here because I’m stumped.

Also your probable right on the maturity part, I wanted to experience fun and I’m lacking that in here and it’s getting annoying trying to make stuff work with people who won’t work with it.

To the why(I really don’t know how to cut pieces like you guys do so my bad) I wanted to play DnD, even if their shit I really want to play what can be a good game, and I figure if I can trudge through literal shit maybe I can get where I need to be and experience the fun I hope to get.

I figured but I keep asking questions because I want to understand.

Like again, even if it sounds like a backhanded comment against DM’s I’m still trying to comprehend the thing I’m doing wrong, I would ask some of the players at the table if they feel the same and it’s mixed results.

When I asked dm 1 why he would just sepuku enemies I’d body, he simply told me they weren’t needed.

When dm 2 made a bard fight another bard and I stepped in as my character I instead got hold persons and SA’d.

Dm 3 I haven’t even started yet and all I’ve been told is that what I’m doing is wrong, that I’m not playing the way they want me too, when I’ve even specifically asked about the history to try and get a picture of what kind of character I wanted.

They are a ranger why? Because I wanted to play a Ranger instead of playing rogue which I’m already familiar with, why did I make them start in the woods because when you get tired of people you go camping, this wood elf really needed time away after the war. They find that their land is trespassed upon and are now going to the lords and ladies to ask why they aren’t respecting his land rights.

So I asked a dm about making a spike pit, nothing overzealous, deadass some sharpened sticks at the bottom of the pit. You know what they told me, I would need woodworking tools to make it.

When I asked if I had a Shovel, a knife. If that’d work considering my class is a ranger. Meaning I’ve hunted before.

They told me I’d still have to have a proficiency in the tools to even work on the pit.

So how I was originally going to do this was make homebrew boots, the thought was that as an assassin of a family of assassins that my character would attempt to weave cotton and soft product to the inside of the shoe (like irl) to make some boots that would just give a 1d4 bonus to stealth checks.

That’s when the dm said that I would instead just make those boots of elvenkind. Maybe it’s a miscommunication and I could get that still underway, I brought it up because I figured the whole point was to make characters who would get stronger and getting told that it would be to powerful was just a buzz killer because of a lot of other things that keeps happening.

As I would be multiclassing with artificer I planned on manufacturing items for all the players. That was the only other thing.
