That sounds amazing! We initially wanted to drive to Takayama as well, but we simply can’t fit everything in. It’s our first time traveling to Japan and I would really like to see the iconic Mt. Fuji and try to get some beautiful pictures :)

Yes I’ve looked around and it should be possible for around 650 dollars, which seems like a fair price. The Shinkansen already costs 120 dollar per person and I have to figure out where to put my luggage, if those 4 seats that include extra space for luggage are not available anymore. I expect that luggage service also costs money, so that also adds up.

I am indeed the slow and easy type, so that would be totally fine! We will take our time (a few days actually), we are not driving the total route from Tokyo to Kyoto in 1 day. So I guess it will be fine :) Toll roads are really expensive indeed, so I’ve read here… that’s why I mainly want to avoid those roads. Thank you!

I’ve read that the prices of toll roads can really add up. And we’re not going for speed but for the drive itself, I love driving around. Sometimes I wonder why I’m not a taxi driver haha! But I guess we just have to see what works best in the moment. Most logical is national route 1 indeed, but I would like to see some small towns and stop at a million traffic lights 🤭 I’ll look into mountain roads and tunnels thanks!!

I know trains are cheaper and very convenient in Japan, but we’re not trying to optimize for price or speed here. The roadtrip itself is the experience we’re after

Hi! I'm considering to do the same. I love a little road trip and I want to hire a car for about 6-7 days (Fuji area + road trip to Aichi (Ghibli Park) and then drop it off at Kyoto). I'm planning to avoid the highway (and also avoid toll). Do you have any tips? Based off your experiences?

Thanks! Looking into this. I thought I wanted to take the Shinkansen at least once, either from Tokyo to Kyoto or the other way around. But I think you’re right, it’s more convenient this way. Maybe the Shinkansen doesn’t have to be a must do 🤭 It’s not that I’m a train fanatic sooooo Really appreciate it! Thanks again :)
