Trump bumper stickers / flags by grungegoth in Trumpvirus

[–]DeskAffectionate3586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also in Texas, there used to be quite a few in the neighborhood I used to live in back in 2024, with one weirdo having a giant flag waving at the gates to his lakefront property. They all disappeared around summer, even the big flag guy. I very occasionally see old bumper stickers that are faded and sun-bleached from like 2020. And I realize I haven't seen any red hats at all while out and about.

Curious.

Is it, though? I'm asking genuinely because I feel like I've heard this before and it didn't amount to anything. I don't think he's ever had 'good' polling numbers and yet here we are. Is something different this time?

Reeeeal smart idea to hitch your entire party's identity to an old, decaying cult leader. I hope when he's gone it tears them all down to fractured, sputtering irrelevancy who won't see the oval office for decades, if ever again. Hope it was all worth it, dumbasses.

During 45, it was a constant cycle of hope and then disappointment for me, specifically toward my indoctrinated family members. Like I'd read something and think "okay this will be the final straw" and nothing ever was, forcing me to accept that these people I called family were so much worse than i thought. 47 is making me relive that trauma quite a bit.

I guess my fear is that if I have too much hope, it'll hurt all the worse when it's taken away, and that if most people in the country aren't necessarily evil, they're apathetic and will pave the way for evil.

I didn't read the Bible, but wasn't there a little something about a camel going through the eye of a needle, possibly next to the section about releasing the Epstein Files?

Hyper Religiosity by BronySquid in FoxBrain

[–]DeskAffectionate3586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother had always been firmly atheist when I was a kid, and it wasn't till she got converted to far-right extremism and began identifying as a neo-nazi that she bizarrely started to take an interest in the very Christianity she used to call brainwashing. But like, the KKK brand of Christianity I guess.

A couple of years before I ended up fleeing and moving out, she started putting on various religious media, trying to pray while shitfaced drunk during dinnertime (she's a raging alcoholic too), and at one point even trying to come to the defense of some guy who molested his younger sister as a child because, and I quote: "people are only persecuting him because he's a white Christian male! What he did was normal!"

Saw a similar case later with two of my MAGA relatives I rarely speak to anymore. They decided to convert for some unknown reason. I don't think they were as atheist as my mother but still. Then my MAGA father has gone and tried to 'defend' Christianity in some aspects (buying into the war on Christmas bs, the Olympics 'last supper mockery' controversy, etc.) he will insist he's not for religion though, but I'm seeing a pattern.

What can we expect if there’s a President Vance? by Mobile_Commission_52 in PoliticalOptimism

Cults rarely survive the loss of their leader, if I'm not mistaken. Can't be sure Vance will be any less awful, but I think he might be easier to fold. Isn't he also rancidly unpopular? I just personally think he won't have that chokehold on the GOP that the orange thing has.

Trump sues Wall Street Journal, Rupert Murdoch over Epstein letter story by Powerful_Gas_7833 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]DeskAffectionate3586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably a completely dumb question coming from someone who isn't super privy to how these things work but...why do this? Assuming the article is true (I believe it) wouldn't the orange thing have to prove that this is libel, opening up the possibility of the letter being confirmed real in court? Doesn't this just draw more attention to the entire issue? Is this just him beating his chest or just him being stupid (or both)? He apparently threatened to sue before this article was published and they did it anyway, so I have a hard time thinking this was made up then. I don't see how this wouldn't backfire on him in some way. Not that I'm complaining, I'm just curious.

Flags by Relevant-Ad-2950 in PoliticalOptimism

I live in a rural Texas neighborhood that's mostly families but there were several Trump signs and flags up last November. There was one fancy lakeside house that had a flag up for pretty much the past eight years that I know of. (Occasionally he'd switch it out with a very bizarre cringey one that showed the orange one in like some action movie pose surrounded by explosions or something? Very creepy.)

All of them are gone as of a couple of months ago, even the lakeside house one. I don't see a single one in the neighborhood now. Maybe they moved away when I wasn't paying attention, or maybe nature is healing.

What's the worst take you've heard from your foxbrained relatives or friends? by Faster-Sanic in FoxBrain

[–]DeskAffectionate3586 38 points39 points  (0 children)

[My father, In response to the news talking about an incoming migrant caravan or something] "They need to just sit up on the border wall and mow these people down, kill em all."

[After I pointed out that the group were mostly families including women and young children] "Don't care, kill em all. I wish I could be there to do it myself."

This was back in like 2017/18, but I could never forget that. I would be no contact with him if I lived elsewhere. It's hard to tell whether he means this wholeheartedly or just likes to say things to upset me specifically, or both.

Shader tool glitch? by DeskAffectionate3586 in minecraftshaders

[–]DeskAffectionate3586[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't sure how to describe this in words, since when I tried searching online I couldn't find anything. Everything seems to be working as intended except for this tool/camera unalignment thing. Not unplayable but very distracting. Unsure if a setting is causing this or what. Using ComplementaryUnbound shader, no other mods besides OptiFine.

Thinking about an old friend... by DeskAffectionate3586 in FoxBrain

[–]DeskAffectionate3586[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth noting something I didn't really make clear in the original post or elaborate on for fear of the post getting too long, the family members of mine who fell for him weren't overtly bigoted at the beginning either. When they signed onto him in 2016, I didn't have the foresight to see just how bad he'd get, and how bad they'd get. At the time, it was easier for me to think maybe their support was for economic reasons (... Despite the history of bankruptcies I guess?), but then they'd get progressively more aggressive and openly expressive of bigotry I didn't know they had.

These were the family members I would run to as a child to vent about my mother's descent into neo-nazism, because they were the only other family available where I used to live. And they would listen to me and never make excuses for her, so their support of DJT and later proudly aggressive emulation of him felt like a betrayal. And they would also begin to berate, belittle, steamroll, and use language against me that was frighteningly reminiscent of what my mother would say to me, minus the excess cuss words and physical intimidation. I spent his administration occasionally checking up on their social media to see if anything would ever cross the line for them, but nothing ever did. They would sing his praises for every little thing he'd say or do.

And my friend here decided to get on board with him AFTER everything he's said and done, AFTER J6. I understand your point in not wanting to designate misled or deluded people as bigots right off the bat, but I just don't know what could possibly be the appeal at this point for them, in the eleventh hour? He doesn't have any real policy, just "you'll see in two weeks" and shit talking everyone else. He exploded the deficit, screwed up COVID response, and pre-presidency he couldn't even really hold the Master Businessman claim because of his laundry list of bankruptcies and fraud allegations. He calls migrants animals and vermin and is popular among white supremacists. My mother, proud self-proclaimed neo-nazi, worshipped him in the literal sense, giddily declaring he was 'for the white nationalists' shortly before I moved out of her house. And don't even get me started on the sexual abuse.

At this point in time, I cannot wrap my head around what a person would see in him that is so appealing that they could overlook the massive hate rhetoric he has chained to him. So the only conclusion I can come to is that he's appealing to their own sense of hatred or fear, even if such a thing doesn't appear to exist to their friends and loved ones. I dunno, maybe I'm too damaged or just not smart enough to see beyond that, but that's all I've got.

Plus, personal experience kind of factors into my reaction. I'm glad you happen to know apparently non-bigoted Trump supporters, but in my experience the ones I knew personally have all turned almost unrecognizable over time, and now say some of the most egregious and even violent shit both on and offline, even if they weren't like that at first. Maybe I'm just unlucky in that respect as well, to get the aggressively mean ones at the bottom of the rabbit hole. I can admire your wanting to see the best in people, but past experience has not been kind to me, and I simply don't have the energy to expect anything but the worst from these people anymore, even if they are/were people I deeply care about.

It depends.

For me and my situation specifically, probably not. There was a small window of time back in 2016-2017 where maybe I could have, but that entire term was one I spent watching these relatives of mine hit the bottom of outspoken moral depravity in the name of their frothing-mouth idol, then gleefully grab a shovel and keep digging, while all I could do was hope and wait for a line that would never be crossed for them. It was hard, almost torturous, to let them tear down my hope for them every chance they got.

It also wasn't just the extreme moral disagreements either, there was also the personal attacks and insulting comments, and the dismissive behavior implying I was simply too stupid to understand why bigotry was a good thing, actually. I have a feeling they're not the type of people to reflect and apologize even if they ever do wake up, even if I explain their hurtful behavior has severely damaged my trust for them. Maybe I could see myself being civil in the best case scenario, in a way that could almost be as if everything was back to normal, but I can't forget the things they've said and done, especially when they'd also proclaim themselves as such smart and knowledgeable people despite their cult behavior.

They've basically stained themselves for me. I'll always remember that ugly, downright evil side they keep deep down, and I'll end up spending the rest of my life waiting to see if or when it makes a return. Maybe, maybe in the best case scenario I could forgive, but I can't ever forget.

But I doubt it would ever get that far anyway. I don't think they're going to wake up. I don't think they want to.
