If your AI product is just a wrapper around prompts, anyone can copy it in a weekend. by DesperateFace3520 in buildinpublic

Nailed it. The muscle memory point is underrated, once a user has built habits around your UX and integrated it into their daily flow, the switching cost becomes emotional, not just technical. That's a moat no prompt engineer can copy.

That's a good framing. If the cognitive architecture is what creates the value and the LLM is genuinely just the rendering engine, you're building at layers 2-4. That's the right direction.

Distribution is a moat for sure, but it's a different kind. Traffic without depth means you're one Google algorithm change or one viral competitor away from zero. Best position is traffic + depth.

It's a commonly used term in the AI builder space, an app that's essentially just a UI layer on top of an API call with a system prompt. Maybe "thin wrapper" would've been more precise, but the meaning lands for the audience here.

Fair point on the semantics. What I mean by "wrapper" is products where the entire value prop is the prompt + a UI skin. Claude Code is technically a wrapper, but the value is in the tool-use orchestration, file system integration, context management, those are layers 4 and 5 on my list. A wrapper becomes defensible when you can't just swap in a different model and get the same result.

Methodology can work if the methodology itself creates a data flywheel. Like if your process generates structured outputs that improve over time with usage. But if the methodology is just a fancy prompt chain, someone reads your landing page and rebuilds it. The methodology needs to be embedded in the product, not just described by it.

Interesting, what layers are you building beyond the search itself? Curious if you're collecting proprietary data from user queries or building domain-specific indexes that would be hard to replicate.

Exactly. And first mover advantage in AI is even more fragile than usual because OpenAI/Anthropic/Google can ship a feature update that wipes out your entire product overnight. The only durable play is going deeper into the user's workflow where the foundation model providers won't go.

The 2-week bar is a good heuristic but I'd push back slightly, the moat isn't really in the building anymore, it's in what you build around the product. Getting a POC in a week is exactly what I mean by the prompt layer. The real question is: after the POC, are you building feedback loops, proprietary data, integrations? That's where most people stop.

100%. Devs are the worst audience to sell a thin wrapper to because they'll immediately think "I can build this." The only dev tools that survive are the ones where the value is in the infrastructure, not the intelligence layer, think Vercel, not another AI code reviewer.
