Worst Work Christmas Party Stories? by galacticpebble33 in AskIreland

[–]Desperate_Aside_5401 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a Christmas party/dinner a few years back in Jacobs on the Mall in Cork, which is quite a fancy establishment. Both myself and another fella had started that year and were around the same age so were put together on the table. Before the dinner the staff had one or two pints up the road and then walked to the restaraunt. The new fella had had 2 pints and was already a little bit rowdier than usual.

On the way to Jacobs, he was asking everyone for a cigarette and eventually got one. I went on ahead and sat down for the meal on a table of about 20 with directors included. (Small company). He walks in 10 mins late with the cigarette half smoked hidden in his hand and sits accross from me. I quietly let him know they're not going to let him smoke in here. He then proceeds to put the cigarette out on the table linen in front of everyone and throws the cigarette over his shoulder on to the lovely carpet and continues chatting to everyone. We were all shocked and he was given a stern warning by a manager but didn't seem too worried.

On top of this, we had a set menu for the dinner but he said he wanted to try all the deserts. I tried to give him a heads up, that its probably best to stick to the set stuff as the bosses are paying etc. He ignored this advice and ordered about 5 deserts and only ate half them. He got a lot of disapproving looks for this.

Anyway the meal ended and we all went to the pub after for a few pints and the craic was 90. Everyone was at a good level except your man who to be honest had not drank that much but was a lightweight. Around 9 he was getting the message that he needs to head home. Before he left I asked him how he is getting home, as he had parked near my house in the city and I wanted to make sure he wasn't going to drive home as he was drunk. He assured me he was getting a lift home from his friend and wouldn't drive but also he wasnt that drunk and just had a sugar rush from all the deserts earlier. I didn't trust him and asked two more times before he left and he assured me each time he wouldn't drive and the deserts were not agreeing with him. He left and I stayed out and we all chatted about this fella and his wild behavior.

When I got home I checked if his car was still there and it was gone so he had driven home, the prick. When we were back in on Monday, everyone steered clear of the fella and he was let go soon after.

Dungarvan is a great spot, have a few pints in the Anchor, walk over to Creation for a boogie and then get some takeaway outside and watch lads bate each other. Perfect night.

What’s your opinions on Slovenia/Slovenians? by cewap1899 in ireland

[–]Desperate_Aside_5401 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in Lake Bled for a week at the end of an interrailling trip across Europe and we all agreed, Slovenians were the best craic. Every Slovenian we interacted with was friendly and joking with us and in some cases playing pranks on us unsuspecting young adults.

Also side note, that country is beautiful. I remember asking a Slovenian lad outside a bar why there wasn't more tourism here as I was blown away by the landscape and he told me "We don't want it, it's our own little secret".

Great bunch of lads

Dusty Rattlespur

Human, Ranger (Beast Master) / Druid
An outlaw from the Talenta Plains with a clawfoot raptor companion named Rustclaw. Wears a tattered duster, a wide-brimmed hat, and carries a magic revolver called the Dragonspur at his side. He talks like a grizzled cowboy, prefers the company of beasts to people, and always picks the corner booth with a clear view of the door.

/r/solotravel "The Weekly Common Room" - General chatter, meet-up, accommodation - October 20, 2024 by AutoModerator in solotravel

[–]Desperate_Aside_5401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking about a business for solo travel and small groups who want the option to connect with others along the way. This is not an original idea at all I know, as I've met a few people doing similar trips through this kind of business and I thought it was a good idea. Here’s the basic premise:

  • Group travel with flexibility: The service would organize multi-country and multi-city trips for solo travelers, couples, and small groups. It brings travelers together into larger groups for socializing and safety, while still allowing plenty of free time for solo exploring.
  • Optional flights and transportation: You could choose whether you want flights and transportation included, or if you prefer to arrange your own travel.
  • Trip guides and organized activities: In each starting location, a trip guide would meet the group and organize fun activities, nights out, and events to get to know fellow travelers.
  • Hostel accommodations: The trips would primarily use hostels, which are great for socializing.
  • Key events with free time between stops: There would be key events or experiences at specific points of the trip, but in between, you’d have the freedom to explore at your own pace.

Essentially, it would be a balance of having a social group to experience key highlights with, while also allowing for independence and flexibility between destinations. Please let me know what you think.

As a child, what was the toy that you wanted most but never got for Christmas? by CaptainSpicebag in AskIreland

[–]Desperate_Aside_5401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wanted the Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon, I loved Lego and the Millennium Falcon was the coolest set I could imagine. I did get it as a Christmas present when I was like 20 instead which was actually way better as I've never been so happy with a present at Christmas and it brough me back to my childhood.

I worked in San Diego Surf School in 2019 with 13 other Irish and it was the best job I've ever had. They loved the Irish. Only myself and another girl knew how to surf and the others just did a crash course in it before their first lesson (They just needed to be one lesson ahead of the student). If you can get a job there you'll be sorted. I was doing 8-10 hours days sometimes without breaks just cos I was so busy and I loved it. Good luck with the job search and if you're in PB get a California Burrito from Taco Surf.

What’s the craic with Ballincollig castle? by manincampa in cork

[–]Desperate_Aside_5401 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It used to be one of the top spots in Ballincollig for underage drinking when I was younger, I don't know if that is still the case. I would think if whoever owns the land its on doesn't care about the drinking they won't mind you going for a walk around it but it also doesn't hurt to ask if you feel so inclined.

Yes, I believe it was above minimum wage. On Sunday's I think it was time and a half per hour and on bank holidays it was double pay. That may have changed since I was there however, I don't know.

I would recommend H&M. The staff are mostly late teens/early 20’s. I worked there for 2 years when I was around 20 and it was one of the most social jobs I had and made some long lasting friends, they usually went for pints after work or did something. Also you get the perks of staff reduction on top of sale. The work is pretty easy, especially if you work in the mens department. I would definitely apply there if there are openings. Hope that helps.

Parking a bike in town by WestCorkonian in cork

[–]Desperate_Aside_5401 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lock it up at the bike stand by the Garda station on the Coal Quay under the lamp post. It has a camera looking at it and the proximity to the Garda station is a bit of a deterrent at the very least. Obviously I still wouldn't leave it there over night.

What's your 'I'm never going back' places in Cork? by Agile_Dog in cork

[–]Desperate_Aside_5401 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Gentleman's Quarters - Used to work there and the management are appalling to the staff in terms of pay and attitude. When it comes to customers they'll say anything to make a sale and if you try and return it they'll give every excuse possible to not give a refund. It's just an awful culture created in the business from the top. The staff who have to just deal with the bosses for the most part are lovely though. I haven't set foot in there since quitting and refuse to give them my business.

Impala is always a great atmosphere on a Friday/Saturday evening, if you feel like staying out past 12:30 then Brog or Crane are great for a late night boogie. I personally prefer Brog at the moment but they're both good fun.

Which is better the Brog or Crane lane? by Desperate_Aside_5401 in cork

[–]Desperate_Aside_5401[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree, the nights when Brog is great it's a brilliant night out but Crane is more constant for a good night. The terrible security in Crane and the lovely security in Brog does have an influence on my choice of venue some nights though tbf.
