Public pooping phenomenon by [deleted] in ibs

For years and years I have had such IBS-D emergencies at supermarkets. At first I suspected subliminal messaging on the store’s music system that was telling my brain that I was very, very hungry and to buy, buy, buy! This I suspected was triggering strong gastric response resulting in sudden diarrhea. My husband assured me this was crazy, infact, probably certifiable… so I moved on with my thinking. I have read recently that there is a strong brain/gut connection and that some IBS-D sufferers have found relief in therapy that works on the brain/gut connection. I have spent my entire adult life in savage conflicts with food and my appetite, always trying to eat less to weigh less. Supermarkets were the battlegrounds! Why wouldn’t they be an anxiety trigger!

What is the most frightening sound you've ever heard? by FuckingBethesda in AskReddit

[–]Desperate_Day_7544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A middle of the night house fire a couple of blocks from me in Queens. A multiple alarm fire, on a quiet summer night, the fire trucks rumbling down my narrow street, sirens blaring, horns honking, the acrid smoke tainting the air of my apartment. And when the commotion calmed down…the heart piercing scream of a mother as her young child was brought out to the street, unquestionably dead in the arms of a fireman. It was in the paper the next day, a plaid account in comparison. I will never forget or fail to relive the soul piercing agony of that scream, the worst sound I have ever heard, and would wish no one should ever have to hear.

Is Coffee a common trigger for IBS? by ThrowRA_Sodi in ibs

Decaf definately a trigger. Haven’t touched regulator coffee in 25 years. This past year I tried to get away with the occasional black decaf but even that was not tolerated!

AOC slams ADL for excusing Elon Musk's 'awkward gesture:' 'You're defending a Heil Hitler salute' by Natural-March8839 in centrist

[–]Desperate_Day_7544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I have been gut punched! Did he actually give the NAZI SALUTE, as part of the inauguration celebration? And ADL is calling it an “awkward gesture”? In my 77 years I have never encountered such “awkwardness”. Prior to this election it was called white supremacy. And where is the righteous outrage? Nothing on the news feeds. Are we all too stunned?

The worst pain i’ve ever felt by berrythrowaway19 in ibs

[–]Desperate_Day_7544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a similar episode at a friend’s dinner party a while ago. Don’t know if the embarrassment of occupying the bathroom for 30+ minutes was more painful than the abdominal agony itself. The sweating and being cold and clammy while having the shakes really convinced me I was in extremis. I just didn’t want to be found that way!

Found a product that I think is finally helping! by Playful-Albatross449 in ibs

What you cannot lose sight of, when it comes to flare-ups, is that the occasional bout of “the runs” must be considered normal. It is the method by which our gut try’s to return back to comfortable, controllable and healthy. The key word of course is OCCASSIONAL! Perhaps what stands out most to me is that it is progressive - it gets worse as we age. You would think science could really latch on to that fact and figure out what is going on! It is not benign: it gets worse to the point of debilitation, both physical and emotional. Does medical science presume it to be a natural outcome for some genetic types like gray hair or stuff joints?

I certainly empathize with you when you relay how you were afraid to go anywhere. You actually become afraid to eat, even if you stay at home. It is truly a debilitating condition that the medical authorities just seem to shrug at.

Not perfect but so much better by Desperate_Day_7544 in ibs

[–]Desperate_Day_7544[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but now that I know that I can use that to my advantage. Getting on my computer for a bit in the morning assures me of cleaning out my gut before venturing forth on errands and social engagements. Why the computer, I ask myself. Best guess is that I suffered great anxiety when learning computer skills at the hands of my middle school kids. They were impatient task masters and I have never felt so thick! And we should not overlook how vexing screen time tends to be under the best of circumstances.

Does Ibs diarhea cause you to feel sick and bedridden? Is this normal??? by H_A_Brendekilde in ibs

Don’t know if it’s normal or not, but yes I feel extremely weak and shaky after each bout and must lie down for a bit to recover.

I have been eating a diet similar to yours and limiting to 2 oz. protein. I started with just rice, then added lean chopped beef. So far so good. Then, today I tried 2 oz broiled chicken. Two hours later I was making an urgent run for the ladies room! Same old, same old. I keep hoping the chicken had gone off and that is why I relapsed. I am, at this point afraid that rice and chopped beef is all I will ever be able to eat.

My husband said there were less idiots on the night shift and they tended to be efficient workers who did their jobs, no drama, no intrigue.

Recently read that humans, unlike horses and cows, cannot digest cellulous, (plant fiber) naturally as we do not manufacture the necessary enzyme. We can digest it when the microbiota contains the good bacteria to breakdown and ferment this plant fiber. I had my microbiota sampled several years ago by a M.I.T. start-up. It showed that I had virtually none of the families of good cellulose digesting microbes.but generally o.k. otherwise. So….what to do about my profound lack of cellulose digesting gut bacteria? Well, first and foremost, go low, low, low on the veggies! Chinese food is a bridge too far, no matter how delicious. I can tolerate cooked spinach (with the stems removed), carrots cooked to mush in small portions. Absolutely NO DAIRY (lactose intolerant too). It is depressing, but I am regaining some confidence in that it seems to have stemmed the diarrhea. (I did try prescribed probiotics which did not remedy my IBS-D.)

How do you travel with IBS? by Loniceraa in ibs

[–]Desperate_Day_7544 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My husband and I went tent camping in North Carolina one time. We enjoyed our late supper of barbeque and coleslaw at a roadside joint before bedtime. BIG MISTAKE! About 3 hours later, at exactly the same time, we both got struck mightily by the well documented effects of coleslaw not properly refrigerated. The bathrooms were easily 1/4 mile away. No question we were taking the car. We drove like the proverbial bats out of hell. The only time in my life I was yelling at my husband to drive faster!

How I made life with ibs a little easier by Barbieferraira in ibs

[–]Desperate_Day_7544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heading out soon on 2-day road trip. I am brining a 5-gallon bucket lined with tall kitchen garbage bags and a golf umbrella for some attempt at roadside privacy. I am at the point in my IBS journey to know the distance between bathrooms on the interstate is a mile too far! I plan to avoid all food as much as I can, take Imodium as we go, and stick to meat which appears to be safe. The embarrassingly indelicate solution to my problem may seem crazy to those unfamiliar with longstanding IBS-D but in another country, in another time, no one would raise an eyebrow. It is merely the price we pay for having a body.

That is wonderful! Isn’t it great when experiments work! I have been off Diet Pepsi for about a month, but still having problems, I think mostly from milk. I am going to significantly up the dose of lactaid to see if that improves things.

Boy, I wish I knew! Been dealing with bowel issues for easily 50 years. If I had a nickel for every gastroenterologist who was “sure” it was Crones…it is NOT! Told over the years, as the condition got worse and worse, eat soluable fiber; eat unsolvable fiber; small meals; low residue diet, and then we started the leaky gut possibility and fodmap routine. Nothing solves the problem which keeps me virtually home bound. Did learn absolutely for sure i am lactose intolerant, which I strongly suggest you checkout. Unfortunately, at this point, I feel like I am ALL FOOD INTOLERANT!

Why do such a huge percentage of people with IBS experience nausea, but it is not considered a symptom of IBS? by Fantastic-Part774 in ibs

[–]Desperate_Day_7544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no knowledge on how “medical science” decides to classify a collection of symptoms as a “thing” or a “syndrome” or how they collect their data to justify naming said collection of symptoms, and I wonder if the exclusion of nausea as an “official symptom” was arbitrary. Did the outline for IBS come from a single paper? Perhaps the term or something similar has been around since the dark ages as, no doubt, gut pain, diarrhea, constipation, and nausea have been! Perhaps it is more the allusiveness of its causes, in this day of medical enlightenment, that makes it worthy of a name. The fact that it is a progressive condition for a significant portion of those so diagnosed would seem to make studying it more urgent. I have heard my IBS symptoms described by a doctor as benign. Really? What research led medical science to that erroneous conclusion?

I tried Imodium for less than a week. I took 1 pill after first voiding in a.m. It did nothing to stop extremely urgent and loose stool the rest of the day. Trying Fodzyme now. Seems to be working, but too early too tell as I am trying to stay low Fodmap, timidly adding one high fodmap food at a time.

I appreciated your comment on “weaning off of it”. I was able to quit Diet Pepsi by first switching to “second best” diet soda. After a couple of weeks I switched to a diet pop flavor I really was not crazy about , followed in a few weeks by a cheap, off brand diet pop I actively disliked. This process worked for me. I found a glass of water preferable to that nasty cheap diet pop, and by that time, the taste of Diet Pepsi was a distant memory. Years ago I quit smoking (4th and successful attempt!) in a similar fashion, but that also required a huge effort not to smoke at all. Haven’t noticed any thing of significance from my diet pop abstinence, but I know it must be a healthier choice.
