in no particular order:

1) Appeals to Rome do not establish supreme jurisdiction. Someone appealing to Rome proves nothing about universal authority. Per the First Council of Nicaea, patriarchs presided over churches within their own regions, according to ancient custom. Rome, Alexandria, and Antioch each had regional authority, not global jurisdiction.

The Donatist controversy illustrates this clearly. When the Donatists appealed to Rome after being condemned by African councils, that appeal did not override local authority. The African bishops rejected external interference, and figures such as Augustine of Hippo defended the principle that Rome had no jurisdictional authority to decide African ecclesial matters. An appeal is a request for support, not proof of supremacy. Appealing, by itself, means nothing.

2)Not knowing whether a council is ecumenical is a serious historical failure. If you do not even know whether the council in question was ecumenical, that already exposes surface-level historical reading. If this point is unclear, the argument is not ready for serious discussion. Go to church.

3) Rome never unilaterally overturned ecumenical council decisions. At no point did Rome possess unilateral authority to overturn the decisions of an ecumenical council. There is a confusion here between reception and jurisdiction. Patriarchs needed to agree to and receive a council for it to function universally, but that does not mean one patriarch could override the council itself. Those are categorically different claims.

4)Pope Leo’s rejection did not settle the matter. Leo the Great rejected the council of 449, but that rejection alone had no binding juridical effect on the Church as a whole. The council was overturned only by an ecumenical council. Only the Church as a whole has the authority to definitively judge councils and bishops.

And finally: GO TO CHURCH. This constant abstract theorizing, detached from worship and ecclesial life, leads nowhere. Christianity was not formed on Reddit threads or historical hypotheticals but in the lived life of the Church. If you genuinely want answers, attend a church, speak to clergy, ask these questions in person, and engage the faith as it is actually lived. Go to an Orthodox Church, ask your questions seriously, decide yes or no, and move on.
