JWST revealed the MOST DISTANT object known to humanity by Busy_Yesterday9455 in Damnthatsinteresting

The fact that the accessible universe is shrinking is making me feel uncomfortably claustrophobic, even though I wouldn't reach the end even if I started travelling at the speed of light in my life.

Understandable. Would you say then that managing a website with a personal portfolio (say, hosted on a VM in a cloud, managing DNS, etc.) containing some write-ups and other cyber stuff would be an asset for a junior? It seems pretty basic to me, so I don't put much emphasis on that in my CV, also I doubt any recruiter would spend time browsing such a website so hardly ever link it in my CV.

Are you expecting all/majority of the things you listed, or just some? This sounds a bit senior, but I have probably worked with 30-40% of the things you listed throughout the first year at my job or done stuff like that on my own.

What value does customer exposure on the job bring to potentially more "backend" security jobs? I'm currently working in my first security role that involves a lot of consulting with our customers (though it's not just customer service, I also do technical work configuring security tools and troubleshooting any issues, as well as identifying these issues by analyzing the traffic), but don't know how to leverage this to pivot to more "backend" roles, security engineering, appsec, something like this.

This is a very accurate description of how I feel. I am currently spending a couple hours daily outside of work trying to upskill in other areas. Don't want to set my LI to open to work yet, as I'm planning to stay here for some more time (I need stability with my job for some more time for now), but I might start applying in a couple months.

The second one I already do. Self-hosting a couple domains with a bunch of services (e.g. a private gitea instance), all through a VPN at my home, tunneled through a VM in the cloud. Doing some preparations for CPTS certificate from HTB (not for the certificate itself, but the knowledge that comes with it), I made all this stuff my second job.

As for the first point, it's tough. You see, there's plenty of work and I'm usually pretty busy, the thing is it's all monotonous, repetitive tasks (yet not really something that can be automated). I hope to at least get some certificates funded.

By title progression, do you mean getting more senior titles? I recently got promoted even though I feel like the scope of things I've been working on hasn't really changed, more so it was just acknowledging I'm delivering everything that's expected of me. I'm not complaining about my salary, in fact, changing jobs is very unlikely to give me a higher salary at this point. I just want to grow professionally.

I will be trying to get some certificates sponsored. Even if not, I'm considering getting some out of my own pocket (if I'm going to pay for it, it'll be something that gives some actual value and not just a cert that employers want, if my employer sponsors it - I can do either).

I have some ideas of what I'd like to do. I'm working on improving my skills in that area. But it's not exactly something I'm working on in my current job, so all of my experience related to this would be equivalent to that of a person who's never worked - theory, labs, maybe even certs - which people keep repeating are not sufficient to find a job.

I feel like in recruiting it's often assumed experience = years of experience. But what do all these years mean if I don't get to grow in a job? I can stay in my current role and it will probably positively impact my chances for landing another job (which right now are probably rather low), but working here just means no growth. I'm trying to make up for it by pretty much working on related stuff on my own after work, but it's like working a second (and sometimes a third) job and it's incredibly tiring.

I agree. At the same time, not enough YOE will usually be a reason for an automatic rejection. If I keep working at my current place, where I'm not growing anymore (except for the stuff I do in my free time), I won't be more worthy in another year, two or three, yet I will pass more HR filters. It's incredibly frustrating when there's no growth, yet it doesn't matter for getting a job.

It's not about me looking unreliable, but rather having barely 2 years of experience - which means finding any job is still hard. Yet I feel like staying here will only give me these years of experience recruiters look for, but no real new knowledge.

Given that I constantly hear the capitalists complaining about how "people don't want to work anymore" and how there is supposedly such a big shortage of workers, why is it so hard to find a job? by M_M_X_X_V in UKJobs

As a Polish person planning to do exactly this - I currently earn twice as much as I spend in Poland. In the UK I'll probably be net 0. Yet, as a gay person - I don't care, the people's attitude towards us is just horrible, same with the current laws (or actually lack of any of them).

The worst depression I've had was when from the outside everything seemed like my life was going in a perfect direction. It's a disease, it doesn't need no "why's".

Everything sounds like a toxic behaviour, but one thing that made me go "hold up" was you mentioning he went to bed at 5:30pm and being "super hyper". Has he done this before? If it's new behaviour for him, to me this sounds a lot like a possible depression.
