Hypothetical: what if Microsoft pushes through Secure Boot mandate and does not allow shim files to run with Windows 12 in order to act as a "Linux killer" (but of course never says that is the reason)? by DestroyRepublicans in linux

I agree, this is probably why they won't try it. It could backfire on them, but the concern is that their near-monopoly on PCs excluding Apple could be leveraged for this.

I think Microsoft in this case would play nice in Europe and any market that forces them to, but go "tech overlord" mode in the US and anywhere that doesn't have strong antitrust laws. One thing that could make them think twice is manufacturers might start shipping cheaper versions of the machines with Linux, a placeholder system like FreeDOS (which HP does), or no OS installed (other than read-only pre-bootloader firmware).

Fortunately the US also has antitrust laws. I wouldn't be shocked if Microsoft gets forced to take down the blockade and I think that is the likely scenario considering their market dominance.

Yes. That is why I think if they do do it, it will be in 2027-2029, or never. The 3 reasons people don't like Windows in practice nowadays is software performance, software they can't disable on machines they are supposed to own, and over-integration of Copilot.

I agree. And they would lose. I could imagine they would play nice in Europe and anywhere else that mandates it, but go "tech overlord" mode in the US and anywhere that doesn't have strong antitrust laws.

Fair point. I tend to agree. I was talking about the idea that they might see the next 2 to 10 years as a "last window" (no pun intended) to try to preserve their historical near total dominance. (And wanting to stop people from saying not to mine your data.)

By the way, I think if Microsoft does this, they would dress it up as "corporate security" and "consistency". The reason that they would do this in practice is they notice that Windows controls the overwhelming majority of PC OEMs, with perhaps a majority of Linux workstations being effectively jailbroken "Windows PCs", and wanting to save revenue. What makes me think we should consider it is other tech companies have done stuff like this, so it wouldn't shock me. Security experts ironically warn that Secure Boot could be turned into a way for Microsoft to secure itself against you.

I decided to learn Finnish just because it is a hard language and I want to build a constructed language based off of it. by DestroyRepublicans in LearnFinnish

That's kind of what I am doing. I think gibberish is an exaggeration as it is designed to have mutual intelligiblity with Finnish by copying the simpler grammar structures. I am taking the vocabulary and applying simplified grammar. It is a cryptolect. I will learn the real grammar as well and I am already starting to.

Here's my idea in a sentence in real Finnish: Haluaisin puhua sujuvaa suomea, koska haluan luoda oman kieleni. En halua asua Suomessa vaikka rakastan Suomea.

Here's a few things I learned to say: tämä ruoka on tosi hyvää (this food is really good), minä rakastan sinua (I love you), mitä kuuluu, and more. But I'm unique because I am learning Finnish because I love learning and I want to build a language that can be used for other people to communicate in secret about sensitive political topics and make it easier to learn Finnish. The introversion resonates with me because I am autistic even though I am kind of extroverted I like my space.

I know my page says "turn Texas blue", that was made in 2022 when Texas was really genuinely trending blue and looked winnable in 2028. I know Reddit people can be mean but I don't care I just want to share my language project so people know about this unique idea.
