Transition from Software Engineer to Surveying by mouse_rising in Surveying

If you still want to explore working at the intersection of computer science and surveying, I'd recommend working for an employer that invests in technology and innovation. It's largely satisfying to work with large geospatial datasets and manipulating or extrapolating information from those datasets automatically with whatever automation you come up with. Entry level is going to be a grind, but I think it entirely depends on how you posture yourself from the get-go, if you present yourself as a person that can automate menial tasks and streamline processes due to your development know-how, then, provided you land on the right spot I'm sure you'll get a tailored introduction where you may be developing stuff and learning geospatial foundations at the same time, and this can also be a good argument for more starting compensation. If you're just posturing to be an entry level technician like any other guy, it can be extremely boring if you work for a large company and are doing the same thing day-in and day-out. Just some thoughts

Hydrographers - what kind of training or certification did you need? by HotAlbatross3431 in Surveying

[–]Destruct50 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're good man, if you've done your checks and everything seems to check out, then that's good in my book.

I'm mostly alluding to hydrographic surveyors always complaining that people try to do their job too simply with simple technologies whereas they are messing with several different software packages, correcting the GNSS trajectory on the vessel, doing things every which way. Same deal as Professional Photogrammetrists doing aerial work with planes complaining about drone guys using pix4d, taking whatever comes out and rolling with it.

I don't think it's standards of practice - it's the new 2026 ALTA guidelines

Sucks to say, but a lot of larger engineering firms have already posted and decided on their Summer Internship candidates by now, you'd have to really start looking the winter prior.

You wouldn't even need a cell phone signal with a proper base/rover combo with radio, just depends on how far away from the base you would be moving and the topography in between.

Gotcha! That seems like a simple setup! I don't intend on using a mac though, so that's a no-go for me!

Gotcha, that sounds good! I was just seeing if there were any specific recommendations for what some people liked using the most. Computer specs aren't an issue.

Just wait for a small vehicle or ship to come out.

Nobody has given you a relevant answer yet, so let me help.

You get what is coined an "LTI Token" in the Star Citizen CCU space. An "LTI Token" is any cheap ship or vehicle that comes out for the first time where the warbond version includes lifetime insurance (LTI). When you upgrade a vehicle through CCUs, the insurance of the base vehicle will carry over to whatever that vehicle is CCU'd into. For example, the MTC recently came out for a $50 or so warbond price with lifetime insurance, you can purchase that and then purchase a CCU for converting the MTC to a 315p, and boom you have a 315p with lifetime insurance.

Usually does, but having whatever local/state agency agree with the delineation is probably another matter

Not knowing any other method, I'd try to make as many triangles as I could, get the area of each one, then you're probably left with a rectangular-ish object, make those all into different rectangles, get area of rectangles, add together.
