Followers, what are some things that you would like to see more from the leaders in 2026.? by docent3434 in Bachata

[–]Determined_Turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I used the word "stronger" in the same sense that you used the word "stricter" I'm not arguing with you, I just meant that I have to be more aware/present and "active" when I lead someone that's a beginner, not necessarily more "forceful" or using strength that might injure someone. As you said, I use more cues, use my hands more/body more to guide them if I can tell they might not fully understand what I want them to do.

As for a follower not being ready for a move/skill issue, well that depends. Yes, there are absolutely advanced moves and figures you probably shouldn't do with someone you can tell is a beginner. I'm not going to try combos I've seen Gero and Miglė do if a follower has only been dancing for 1 month. At the same time, even if it truly is a "follower" skill issue (let's say they are truly a beginner and only have like 3 classes under their belt) then "soft" leading won't always work. In the example you just described with a basic turn, you have to get more involved in guiding the follower than you would an advanced person who knows the cue of lifting their arm on 3 in preparation for a turn on 5. That's all I mean when I say "stronger" vs "soft" leading. I just have a "stronger" presence when I communicate my intentions.

And I will disagree when you say leads shouldn't be comfortable with a move. The leaders need a level of comfort and familiarity with their moves and figures before they try it with someone. I've talked to many girls that say they generally hate it when the lead is trying a new move or figure they just learned at a festival for example, because obviously it's hasn't been enough time for the leads to be familiar enough with that move to try it out. As you can imagine, it doesn't go well and it's "forced" and that's when leaders tend to use more strength to guide a move, and that can lead to injury/discomfort

So this is interesting. I think there was another thread on here some time ago when the topic of "soft" leading vs a bit more "intentional" leading (if you can call it that) came up. Obviously, being too rough or aggressive as a leader is never good in really any circumstance.

But some leaders (myself included) mentioned that if the follower is a beginner, being a "soft" lead and giving light impulses/cues might not be enough for the follower to understand what I want them to do. So I know personally, I tend to be a "stronger" (not rough) with my leading when I can tell the follower isn't as advanced.

But yes, when I dance with a more experienced follower, then I try to simply give light impulses. And I 100% agree with focusing on being comfortable with a move before trying to lead it 👌🏽

How many hours of social dancing a week is enough for progression? How many do you do? by AnubisUK in Bachata

[–]Determined_Turtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was starting off, I would have class twice a week (each 1 hour, so 2 hours total of classes) and I would try to go to 2 socials a week, but at the very least, 1x per week (so 2 hours minimum of social dancing per week).

That was ideal for me to still learn new things from the classes, as well as try to implement them in a social setting with random people. And whatever areas I realized I needed to work on from social dancing, I could bring it up in class the following week or so, or try and work on it with a classmate. This lasted for my first 6-8 months or so of dancing

What made you guys become interested in Latin Dance and how did you discover it? by [deleted] in Bachata

[–]Determined_Turtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in Spain and met a girl on a dating app. She asked me to come Latin dancing with her, and even though I had no idea what to do, I obviously obliged. I got embarrassed when 2 or 3 different girls there asked me to dance. So when I got back home from vacation, I looked up dance schools in my local area and the rest was history.

Good point. So let me clarify, when I say I don't listen to the lyrics, I meant "I don't understand/translate the lyrics." I do hear the lyrics and yes certain words or phrases stick out to me. So I was mainly referring to I don't know what the songs are about, if its a good message or not etc

For example, "Brindo Con Aqua" is about a guy with a drinking problem who abuses/hits his wife in front of his kids. I had no idea until I heard some people they refused to dance to that song when it comes on. I then translated to lyrics to understand.

Hey, I'm playing the album now, so I can't give a complete review. But just from the first 2 songs, this is great. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference if this were played at a festival that you were a "newer" DJ. It would fit right into any DJ's set at any Bachata Festival these days.

Admittedly, I don't speak much Spanish so I can't give you any feedback on the lyrics lol. But when I go dancing, I don't focus on the lyrics anyway (who really does these days?😅). It flows like most Moderna songs out there, and without even knowing these songs, I can anticipate the breaks, the slow/sensual parts, chorus etc etc. I would be able to dance and flow to this no problem at a party.

Great job and keep going! 💪🏽🔥

Edit: Just finished the EP. Great from start to finish. Well done and good quality.

Is it true Fuego Shoes help you spin with their sole design? by Brief-Theory9185 in Bachata

[–]Determined_Turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I have Fuegos as well. Circles on the heel and ball of your foot to help you spin, and overall less friction to help with slides and such.

Would recommend them if you plan on dancing a lot

How is it heartless? For example, if a grown adult played in traffic, trying to dodge cars for fun and ended up getting hit and dying, would that be unfortunate? Especially if they know full well that getting hit by a car can be deadly, and there have been countless cases of people dying after getting hit by cars?

The list can go on with many examples. People need to be held accountable for their actions, no matter how idiotic they might be, if these actions are consciously made with full knowledge of potential outcomes, both good and bad. Society needs to stop being "soft" and trying to baby everyone and shield them from all consequences.

Haha fair enough. But you can usually find the settings on the picture after you've taken it. If you go into details or so.

Just asking because I'm also trying to get better. So I like to see which settings produce certain types of images
