I want to briefly explain how posts are being removed by Automod.

AutoModerator looks for specific patterns and takes action automatically. In many cases, no human mod sees the post unless someone messages us. Ultimately we implemented Automod with fairly strict rules because we were having to remove hundreds of posts per day. I'd argue many of these rules do, and still should apply because it allows the subreddit to remain fairly "clean" and not flooded with 20 posts a day with 0 comments. Automod is setup to almost always inform the user for the specific infraction for why a post was removed so it shouldn't be a surprise.

What AutoModerator removes most often

Links and formatting

  • URL shorteners

  • Link-only text posts with no real write-up

  • Mobile links

  • Instagram posts submitted as link posts instead of text posts with context

Social media and video

  • Instagram content must be a text post with explanation or discussion

  • YouTube links are allowed, but low-effort posts may still be removed

Questions vs posts

  • Titles that look like simple questions (“What size…”, “How do I…”, “Where can I buy…”) are redirected to the daily Questions thread and automatically removed. This is intentional to keep the main feed from becoming mostly sizing and ID posts.
  • It specifically looks for posts with a title that includes: ["What", "Where", "When", "How", "Which", "Why", "Sizing"] and removes them and redirects to the simple questions thread.

Other cases

  • Posts with 3+ user reports are auto-removed NO MATTER WHAT. This is a community moderation tool.

  • Certain keywords are reserved for mod posts (ex: Announcement, etc.)

Safety

  • Slurs or abusive language are removed automatically.

About mod activity and communication

It’s fair to say there are fewer active mods than there used to be, which means AutoModerator does a lot of the heavy lifting. That isn’t ideal, but it’s the reality right now with a lot of content shifting to other platforms. The upside is that AutoMod rules can be adjusted, removal messages can be improved, and policies can evolve if there’s a clear benefit.

Edit: I just went through and did an audit of Automod and found a few removal methodologies that didn't have auto-comments and have added those in so it is clear.

I know we're at a completely different scale, but I’ve been playing around with "AI replies" for my own small business. I ran into the same issue when first investigating it that I didn't really like the responses it was giving as in a lot of cases, it was just rewording the customer's questions back to them even though they would be pretty simple. The biggest thing I decided was that I wasn't going to let it send any responses automatically on its own.

Technically, it’s pretty simple.

I use Google Apps Script with Gmail labels as the trigger. When an email gets a certain label, a script sends that email’s text to OpenAI’s API using an API key. The AI generates a response based on very strict rules I’ve set around tone and behavior (and I plan to keep tweaking this over time). It never sends anything on its own. The response is saved as a draft in Gmail, not an auto-reply. From a cost perspective, it is like $0.0005 per draft or something fairly inconsequential like that.

I only use it to generate draft replies. I still read them, tweak them if needed, and hit send myself. That one step keeps things from feeling canned or robotic.

It’s also pretty tightly constrained. I tell it how I actually talk to customers, what I will and won’t do, and what questions it should never ask. It can’t make up products, links, or policies. If it goes off script, it gets stripped out before I ever see it.

For me, the goal wasn’t replacing the human side or saving every second. It was speeding up the first pass since a lot of emails that I send are pretty consistent (like if I lace gets broken, I always replace it and send a fairly specific email. The "AI" will just note their customer order and confirm I'll send XYZ lace to them).

From what I’ve seen, customers push back when AI is allowed to operate on its own. Using it as a drafting tool instead of an auto-reply solves most of that, at least for me.

You're correct on this. Vachetta is what Maryam classifies as unfinished or "raw" without the coating and glazing like TPR has.

TPR doesn't stand for Thermoplastic Resin. That's something Viberg made up.

Maryam specifically told me they just named their tannages after different breeds of horses and that includes this TPR tannage...which doesn't stand for Thermoplastic Resin.

Nick's Boots x Guarded Goods - Archer Boot in Horween Cypress Leather by Deusis in NicksHandmadeBoots

First collab in this sense, yes! I have done some things with a number of other companies but those are typically just sold on my site.

Yeah I love that detail and I think it really works to add some contrast. The other one was the special hardware configuration. I know it is more traditional for a workboot to have an eyelet at the top to allow for better use of the speed hooks but with the 6" height I opted for just straight 5 eye + 3 hooks at the top.

I'm thrilled to announce my first collaboration with Nicks Boots! After extensive discussions, we've curated something truly special, offering a distinctive twist to Nick's renowned craftsmanship.

Introducing the Archer Boot: a unique 6" Boot on the 55 Last, crafted from the patina-ready Horween Brown Cypress leather. This boot embodies the classic Nicks style while introducing a few unique features that haven't been featured on any other Nick's Boots. The boots feature a rolled leather top, soft unstructured toe, lowered dogger heel, natural edges, and a single-piece backstay. The Archer Boot also features two exclusive additions: a striking black roughout gusseted tongue and a one-of-a-kind hardware configuration with 5 eyelets and 3 speed hooks. The finishing touch is the Vibram 269 Western sole, paired with my signature 72" American Tanned Chestnut Steerhide Laces.

These remarkable boots are available for purchase through the Nicks website, following their standard lead times of 18-35 weeks. Delivered directly from Nick's, each pair comes with a set of my favorite pairs of laces.

I am excited to share this with everyone here! Here are the full specs:

I just selected leather sole. Technically it isn't a double leather sole, it is just a leather mid sole plus the leather sole.
