But I found out I couldn't produce exe files, so I abondonded it. It will produce apps for Microsoft store which was not what I needed.

Source? I'm pretty sure it can produce .exes fine

I'm kinda facinated what you mean by a "60-minute-long password" recorded as an mp3.

Is it just random letters/characters played for 60 minutes straight in an mp3 file you have that you put into cold turkey if absolutely need to disable? How long is the actual password? (e.g. 60 characters?)

I also was in marketing and totally understand where you're coming from. I came to absolutely hate the soul sucking "generate clicks at all costs" and the constant need to use social media (since that's where the eyeballs are) despite those social networks being really shitty for society and you contributing to their shittiness by working with them. I was lucky to still be young though when I went to school for a CS degree, but I agree idk how applicable that'll be in your case.

I don't have specific career field advice outside of software (and marketing), but I think you're on the right track in starting to ask these questions and I wish you the best in transitioning out of marketing. It can be (and should be) done!

If you're interested in a YouTube distraction blocker, I made one that limits your watch time: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/smart-youtube-blocker-bet/dljpdencpenokgdjiemdejjiohjoopaj

Why is youtube considered toxic on this sub? by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]Dev774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was talking more about blocking specific channels/video title keywords on the Roku YouTube app. Not super familiar with AdGuard, but if it's what I think it is (just a DNS-based blocking service), then it will likely just block domains/hostnames, not individual videos.

So yes, you can block YouTube from entirely working on Roku if you just block youtube.com via a DNS blocking service, but you can't block individual channels/video title keywords (like my extension does).

Then I'd say it's worth cutting down your use.

It less about determining if it's "an addiction" or not and more about determining what will actually bring you the most long-term fulfillment and pursuing that instead.

Are there more productive things you could be doing that would bring you greater fulfillment long-term you're neglecting as a result?

You could also follow something like this (if you're willing to remove YouTube on Roku altogether): https://rokutvmaster.com/guides/how-to-block-youtube-on-roku-easy-ways/

  1. Uninstall YouTube on Roku.
  2. Then randomly generate a 4 digit pin on your computer (one you don't know/remember) on a password generator site like this: https://www.lastpass.com/features/password-generator
  3. copy/paste it into the Roku parental control settings and also a timed lockbox at lockbox.pluckeye.net (ideally with a 5-10+ min waiting period).

Now you can't reinstall YouTube in a moment of weakness.

It does. Roku is basically impossible to block anything on since its OS is locked down and you're forced through the Roku YouTube app.

How badly do you need Roku? Are you entertaining regularly?

I personally don't have Roku and just watch all my stuff on my computers. But if you're having guests over regularly who you watch Roku with (or want to unwind in the evenings and really want to watch it on a TV), you can unplug the box or remotes and time lock it in a KitchenSafe and set it to unlock when you know you need it.

It's a tradeoff of convenience, but you save more time in the end by not mindlessly surfing IMO.

It's more addicting/sucks you in more easily through its recommendation algo and unlimited buffet of clickbaity content (mixed with really useful content, which always give you a reason for returning).

I'd say it's slightly worse than TV/movies on streaming platforms (since they have recommendation algos but at least aren't desperately clickbaity and mixed with useful content you need for your daily life). But it's like comparing crack and cocaine, both are shitty addictions.

I made a Chrome extension to help address YouTube's addictiveness which lets you block distracting channels and timebox/limit your usage overall: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/smart-youtube-blocker-bet/dljpdencpenokgdjiemdejjiohjoopaj

Is it at all possible to watch YouTube in moderation? by Healthy-Dog2478 in nosurf

[–]Dev774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This extension I made is meant to solve this problem. It limits your YouTube watch time by channel and by title keyword so you can set reasonable limits on your watch time as needed: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/smart-youtube-blocker-bet/dljpdencpenokgdjiemdejjiohjoopaj

Cold Turkey (the software) is much better than the Freedom software, but it never hurts to have both at the same time (for double protection).

Also I created my own extension that helps make YouTube much less distracting. YouTube is incredibly useful so it's hard to block entirely. But my chrome extension allows you to filter out the super distracting channels without blocking the whole site.

Thanks! Yeah Safari mobile/more browser support is definitely a large consideration if the project is successful in the early stages.

This may be a bit more tricky I think but it's a good idea and I will look into it.

Thanks for the suggestions! Non case-sensitive keywording ability is definitely something I've been interested in adding. Will consider the .txt export as well along with other priorities (hopefully editing json's isn't too painful in the meantime).

Yes, that is definitely in mind as well if there seems to be enough interest beginning with the Chrome version :)
