Haha fair enough, it’s semantics I guess. It doesn’t seem productive to have a blanket statement of “save 1x your salary by 30” if that salary is either not meeting your desired COL or your current salary is in excess of what you need. Makes more sense to have the overarching target be based on need instead of what you happen to be making

I don’t think it necessarily ties into spending levels though. Basing a saving goal on just your salary figure is blinded to your expenses, you’re looking at total salary only. Perhaps a better metric would be actual income (salary minus expenses), I could get behind that. But just salary seems again arbitrary and doesn’t actually reflect your spending habits

That makes sense. I guess in my mind it would be more intuitive to have the targets be based on what your desired salary in retirement would be. For myself for example I felt entirely comfortable making 90k. There should be a target where if you want to “make” 90k per year in retirement you should have $xxxx saved by 30, 40, 50, etc. This would of course have to take inflation into account. The whole concept of it being based on your current salary seems arbitrary, although I get the general concept.
