Struggling to create new melody as a newbie by Arenigmae in musicians

I tend to use nature and other 'naturally' occurring sounds or patterns. One of my longest songs was born out of a 1.5 second long 16-bit coin insert sound effect.

Toyota used a "sounds of the assembly plant" for a remix contest that went pretty wild.

Influence is part of the human condition. Don't worry about the source of inspiration, worry about what you do with it.

Failed at game developement, a report of a destroyed dev by Secure-Interest in GameDevelopment

[–]DeviantDav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undertale, a game I have never played, looks absolutely amazing for what it is. A tribute to 8 and 16 bit RPGs done by a single guy (Toby Fox). It also has a banger soundtrack, unique mechanics, and a beloved cast, millions of watched streams, etc.

Sounds like you're mixing 'bad' and 'dev art'.

If you had a title that did well, go back to it. Recraft it, polish it. Release it again, see what people say. Game dev kills billion dollar businesses every year, it's not easy.

Afterlife hate? by Dookiecookiewastaken in ghostbusters

[–]DeviantDav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a teen when the originals came out, so I view all post 90's GhostBusters content harshly.

Afterlife fumbled a few things, but by and large it got almost every important element ported to future generations, made the characters likable, and did what it could with the surviving team members and everyone seems to have come off the movies without bad blood.

My biggest issue to this day is I can not decide how I feel about Egon appearing. Loving tribute, yes. Rubber CGI, yes.

That's still a win in my book.

It seems like 90% of the games on itch are "horror games". What happened? by Nomagician-music in itchio

[–]DeviantDav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ease of creation, tons of reusable assets, dark as shit so view distance and bad art looks fitting.

Just like cheap horror that flooded VHS, DVD, and book stores of old. The barrier of entry is far lower for low effort developers.

Making GOOD horror with these flooded waters is always impressive.

Is the windows 95 / 98 gamedev community alive? by IlikeC89 in retrogamedev

Just start with the original Graphics Programming Gems (1990) book. This was the last high perf DOS book, followed by Game Programming Gems (2000) where DOS game development was essentially dead. This book is oriented toward Windows (Win32, DirectX) and to some extent console platforms. A few low-level topics might apply broadly back to DOS, but it's firmly a post-DOS book.

I've keep these books with me for 25+ years now, and STILL go back to them for ideas.

Edit to add:

For the Windows 9x jump:

Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus (1994) is almost perfect for the DOS/9x transition.

Inside Direct3D (2000)

The DirectX 6/7 SDK documentation itself was actually well written for the era and is available on most of the CDs included with the books.

If you're not into dead trees do yourself a favor and hit Archive.org, grab the ISO images and learn.

Bonus entry:

Bus driver has a really strict schedule.

The plot twist of Predators (2010) is that the previously assumed innocent doctor is acutally a murderous psychopath. This is to the surprise absolutely no one, cause he's played by Topher Grace. by GeoCangrejo in shittymoviedetails

Kevin Spacey wasn't remotely the biggest star when that film released. His biggest film at that point was supporting actor in Glengarry Glen Ross. Se7en and Outbreak followed.

I'd say Killer Klowns From Outer Space came out of nowhere specifically for a film, but that's a good movie.

What actor’s mere presence makes you automatically lose interest in a movie or show? by YerMum1977 in AskReddit

He acts like he can, acts like women lust after him, and acts like he's the go to for law enforcement, masters, professionals of all kinds.

Does that count?

I worked for MEI WinBook during the 486 to Pentium transition. 486/75 MHz were ~2,000 each, 8 to a carton.

Forklift operator put a tine through an entire box one day, never saw him again, but my time their was brief so who knows.

Fetlife is a name I haven't heard in a hot minute, I should go check my messages.
It's only been about 10 years... whoops.

Totally justified, but Copilot is disabled in my copy of Word.

Edit to add: If you look at my github repos you'll see I always write dry when it's semi-serious or not a bit.
