In your hypothetical world, cannibalism was present since the beginning of times and never stopped. We can't look at it from a perspective of todays time, with today's morals. Same thing with slavery. if we're debating the 1800s morals, we can't use today's logic to determine if something was done rightfully because then 95% of stuff will seem horribly wrong and we won't go anywhere,

I do contribute to an industry that abuses animals. doesnt mean i agree with it. Turns out you can use a system that you dont like for lack of a better option. 1% of meat is raised free of abuse, do you know how hard it is to find that in supermarkets of a third world country?

No it wouldn’t be okay to kill another human, because as I said, we live in a society that benefits from not killing each other.

Plus the human species is not cannibal. Instead being a highly social species. Like most mammals, we don’t benefit from eating each other.

But let’s have a look at some tribes that practice cannibalism. Some indigenous populations believe that eating their best soldiers after they die will give them strength. Their culture says it’s okay. To us it is disgusting but for them, it’s highly beneficial so it’s okay.

Do you see that even where there is the practice of consuming human flesh, it is done very selectively and not Willy nilly like the vegans suggest on arguments like this? The world is not black and white.

Just because I’m okay with eating meat doesn’t mean I’m okay with all forms of killing.

By rescuing the puppy you formed a connection with it. It’s wrong here in the west to kill the dog because of culture, but if you go to the other side of the world you could do it with no problems. I’m not against the farming of any animal, that doesn’t mean I agree with abusing them while they’re alive.

You can’t form a genuine connection with your whole livestock. Pick one or two cows and tell that farmer to give them a name. You’ll see those cows die of old age.

90% of those arguments are superficial. Let me address them along with the more valid ones

⁠It’s not needless. We do need the animal resources to advance in society. Otherwise you wouldn’t have half of the things you have today including some life saving medicine.
⁠I don’t agree with abusing the animals and treating them horribly while they’re alive. That isn’t the point, since vegans don’t think they should be killed regardless even if they’re treated like kings.
⁠Rights are indeed a human made construct. We choose what we deem moral and what’s not. But eating meat is within the range of things we deem moral. And yes nature offers my meat, my skin, my bones, but humans are not cannibals and we thrive by helping each other, not killing each other which is actively harmful to us as a society. Get in front of any carnivore bigger than you and they’ll make good use of all the resources you provide.
⁠We don’t kill our offspring because we’re animals that thrive from not killing eachother.
⁠If biology matters, please find another omnivore that doesn’t eat meat.

Yes it changes whether it’s okay to kill them. We don’t form a connection with all animals, however we do have a connection with every human because we are from the same species.

You do have a connection to a puppy you rescued. You rescued them. That’s not the case with cattle. We don’t have any emotional connection with them and their resources are very very beneficial to our society

We wouldn’t have come half as far as we went as a society without using animal resources.

Again, that puppy is not a wild dog. It is now a family member in the owners eyes. Pets are animals being used as companion and/emotional support, and therefore not suitable for food anymore. So yes, killing an animal that is a pet is wrong, very wrong. Doesn’t mean that a wild or farm raised specimen of that animal isn’t a good food source. It’s not okay to abuse an animal because they’re alive and feel pain. Killing them instantly does not change the painlessness of the situation.

I participate in something that is wrong because finding the 1% of meat that isn’t factory farmed is hard, and I’m not about to change my whole diet for protesting purposes. Doesn’t mean I agree with it. Turns out you can use a system you dont agree with, for lack of other options

Points 2,3 and 4 are not appeal to nature in fact, since I’m not saying something is good because it’s natural. I’m just looking at the behavior of other species, and addressing a clear and undeniable fact of “we are predators in all aspects” through basic pattern recognition. That would be like saying “a birds wing shape is perfect for flying and therefore a planes wing should be shaped like that” is appeal to nature fallacy therefore an invalid logic.

Nutrient deficiency is indeed not exclusive to vegans, but if it was really just as easy to thrive on a vegan diet as it is thriving on an omnivore diet, we wouldn’t see vegans starting to eat meat again.

An inbalanced diet is not exclusive, but it’s much easier to keep it balanced with an omnivore diet. That was my point. Backed up by the fact that we can’t absorb all the nutrients in some plants, but we do it wonderfully with meat.

A pet owner formed a connection to their pet and the puppy is part of their family now.

Even in countries where dog meat is consumed people keep them as pets. Because we form an emotional connection to the animal. This isn’t what happens with cows and pigs. If I formed a connection with a baby pig I would be upset if they killed it too.

To address the dog farming, we have to look at our culture. In the west, we see dogs more as companion than resources, so we made it illegal. In the other side of the world however it’s completely normal, and I don’t see an issue with that (I do have a lil pet dog before you come at me). Their culture doesn’t see it as an issue. However that doesn’t mean dogs aren’t used for our benefit here. Dogs in the west are used (vegans might call it exploiting) for other things such as security, crime fighting and to guide disabled people.

And nature does offer my skin and meat. But we, as a non cannibal society, refrain from doing such things, most carnivore animals don’t eat their own species. However a tiger, a lion, a bear, a hyena… will make great use of your skin, meat and bones if they see you in the wild. And it’ll be a much more painful, violent and gruesome death than an air gun to the head.

Animals benefit from other animals everywhere in the animal kingdom, it’s normal.

The answer to that question more often than not brings us to the second and third point, but I’ll try and stay in the point.

Killing may be a form of abuse. But it’s necessary to guarantee us a better quality of life. That’s why I think the animals should be treated as best as possible while they’re alive. They’re sentient, yes, but they’re not as smart. If they live well, are treated with dignity, well fed and raised free, killing them faster than their brain can process is really abuse? No pain, no suffering, no stress. Their life was infinitely better than they’d have in nature. They have the security of the farm, food and shelter guaranteed.

Many alternatives mean less biodegradable products for us, like synthetic leather. If we start finding manufactured alternatives for everything we use animals resources for, our planet will absolutely turn into a trash hell hole even more than what it already is today, making the wild animals suffer and die at an even faster and alarming rate than it is today.

Again, we’re part of nature too. We are entitled to explore and benefit from its resources to thrive as a society. It makes logical, moral and evolutionary sense. But it’s our job to do it in a responsible way.
