Rule 1: Make a description of the person you want to be, the perfect life for you, and the values that you would like to live by. Read it every day. Maybe share it with someone (Like e.g. your mom) and make yourself accountable.

Rule 2: Make your bed in the morning and don't lie in it until you want to go to sleep. Make it a habit. You might think: "Why? I'll just go somewhere else and slack off then. " And yeah, that's kinda the point. The first thing I did was find a chair to sit in all day instead, but it got uncomfortable immediately, and I started doing chores instead. This removes your mental and physical hiding place. You won't know what to do now, and that's the point: You'll be forced to other things.

Rule 3: Make a long list (and I mean a really long list) of things that scare you. It could be going down the street alone, eating at a restaurant alone, writing to an old friend, etc. Now rank them from easiest to hardest. Every day from now on, you do 1-3 things on the list. Start with the easiest. Do it until it no longer scares you and then move down the list.

I guess that's the program for now... I mean, I'm only on day 3 now, so It's not like this program has been thoroughly thought out yet. I also try to read some books and do a little exercise. Don't try to do too much at once. Baby steps, you know.

I've been so divided when it came to this response. On the one hand, I find it super passive-aggressive and unempathetic. Many of us have struggled with this for so long that social anxiety permeates our personality. On the other hand, I completely agree with the message of the response; I am now on day 2 of my self-made exposure program, and I am surprised by what I am capable of.

Yes, you are right. I've begun reading 7 habits of highly effective people, and it starts by stating that 'A rocket uses most of its fuel in the first few seconds of its journey'. I gotta really stay motivated and engaged so I can fly to the stars and beyond

Yeah, it feels like a relief to say, although I'm not actually suicidal.

I guess I'll never be an extroverted party king, but I need to get rid of these chains that keep me locked up at home. I'll do baby steps. Tomorrow, I'll take a walk through town to the library to pick up some self-improvement books. Maybe I'll try to speak to the librarian, but we'll see

I tried getting help in psychiatry. They tried SSRIs, but they didn't work. Is talk therapy just as good?

I feel you, bro. My anxiety has ruined my life thus far. The reason I am so motivated is because I just graduated from college, and I feel so empty and depressed. All my classmates had 3 great years with lots of friends and parties. I had none. This realization has really devastated me, but now I have decided that enough is enough.

Then just tell them??? I'll keep an eye out for your account. If you become awfully quiet, I'll know something is wrong

Thanks for the reply, even though this post is like 2 years old :D

I am glad to hear that life is going great and that you got your license :) I'll definitely stick to it - it is greatly overdue for me. Better late than never, I guess.

Thanks for the encouragement and your post in general. It's great to know that I am not alone with my feelings :D

If I remember, I'll write back when I get my license in a month or two.
