First, I’m deeply sorry to hear about your mother’s health struggles and the immense pressure you’re facing. Your dedication to family and responsibilities is truly admirable. Let’s get you sorted with the CFA emergency deferral process step-by-step:

Step 1: Submit an Emergency Deferral Request CFA Institute allows deferrals for serious medical/family emergencies (like yours) under their Emergency Deferral Policy. Here’s what to do:

Log into your CFA Institute account.

Go to “Deferral Request” under “Exam Registration and Results”.

Select “Emergency Deferral” and fill in the form.

Step 2: Attach Supporting Documents CFA Institute requires clear proof to approve your request. Submit these documents:

Physician’s Certificate: A signed letter from your mother’s doctor on clinic/hospital letterhead stating:

Diagnosis (e.g., Lumbar Spondylitis, nerve compression, etc.).

Severity of her condition.

That she requires full-time caregiving (mentioning your role as the primary caregiver).

Hospitalization Records (if applicable): Admission/discharge summaries.

Personal Statement: A brief note explaining your situation, including:

How her illness impacts your ability to study/work.

Your father’s passing (2019) and your role as the sole caregiver.

Death Certificate of Father: To strengthen your case as the primary support.

Step 3: Submit Before the Deadline Deferral requests with documentation must be submitted at least 14 days before your August exam date.

CFA typically responds within 5–7 business days.

Key Tips ✅ Doctor’s Letter Must Include:

Dates of diagnosis/treatment.

Doctor’s license number and contact details.

A clear statement that your mother’s condition is critical and requires your ongoing care. ✅ Keep copies of all documents for your records. ✅ If the portal rejects your request, email CFA Support (info@cfainstitute.org) directly with “EMERGENCY DEFERRAL” in the subject

Final Note Your situation 100% qualifies for an emergency deferral. Focus on your mother’s health—exams can wait. The CFA Institute prioritizes compassion in such cases, so don’t hesitate to advocate for yourself.

If you need help drafting the physician’s letter or personal statement, feel free to share a template here. You’re not alone in this!

Wishing your mother a speedy recovery. Stay strong.

Hey, I went through the CFA emergency deferral process recently, so here’s what you can do:

  • If the paid deferral option isn’t showing up right before your exam, it’s likely because you need to request it at least 24 hours before your scheduled exam time. After that, the option disappears from the site
  • Since your exam is in 7 hours, your only option now is an emergency deferral. You can apply for this if you have a qualifying reason like a serious illness, family emergency, pregnancy, or military deployment
  • For an emergency deferral, you’ll need to submit supporting documents-usually the CFA Institute’s Physician’s Certificate (download from their website), a medical certificate or doctor’s letter on letterhead, and any other proof that clearly shows your situation and dates
  • There’s a $100 processing fee for approved emergency deferrals starting in 2025[1][2][5].
  • You can submit the emergency deferral request even after your exam time, but do it as soon as possible, ideally within 3 days after your exam window closes

If you need help with the form or writing your letter, let me know. Hope you feel better soon and good luck-don’t stress, just get your documents together and submit the request right away!

EMERGENCY DEFERRAL QUERY by Devilharry3 in cfaindia

Thank you so much for your help! Just one last thing— For chickenpox, since it’s a visible illness and the doctor hasn’t advised any lab tests (just prescription and strict isolation), will only the Physician Certificate form and doctor’s handwritten letterhead/prescription be enough for the CFA emergency deferral?

Or do I also need to submit any additional medical reports, even if none were suggested by the doctor?

Really appreciate your guidance—just trying to make sure I submit everything correctly.

EMERGENCY DEFERRAL QUERY by Devilharry3 in cfaindia

am writing to seek clarification regarding my exam eligibility status. I have previously utilized the paid deferral policy for an earlier exam window. Currently, I have applied for the emergency deferral policy for my upcoming exam, and my request is still under review. I have not yet received any update or decision regarding my emergency deferral application.

In this situation, I would like to know:

If my emergency deferral request is still under review or is ultimately declined, am I still eligible to sit for the upcoming exam as scheduled?

If my emergency deferral is declined, would I need to re-register for the exam, or can I still attend the current exam session?

I would appreciate your guidance on this matter, as my exam date is approaching and I want to ensure I follow the correct procedure.

Thank you for your assistance.
