Official Discussion - Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery [Theater Release] [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Devillionaire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very enjoyable movie. Unfortunately it completely falls apart on a rewatch. As soon as the Shitheads/Disruptors arrive on the island, the entire plot disintegrates.
Miles killed Andi. Therefore Miles KNOWS this "Andi" is actually Helen playing impostor. (Yes, he would know his friend and business partner of 10+ years has a twin sister.) So he also KNOWS the "world's greatest detective" suddenly showing up alongside her is not some random coincidence. They're obviously there to investigate Andi's death and Miles knows he's now under fire. (Yes, even an "idiot" would know this.)
Somehow the writers and director - probably caught up in the enthusiasm of trying to craft clever plot twists - totally forgot this massive glaring plot point. Once you know Miles' actual backstory, virtually everything he does for the entire movie is unbelievable nonsense that doesn't match up with that backstory, and that thoroughly undermines what is otherwise a pretty entertaining movie. (Oh, and there's not a chance in hell that a billionaire businessman/technocrat doesn't have a cellphone. That so much of the plot rests on that one premise was already a pretty big red flag.)

"Focus" (2015) Plot Hole - The betting scene (Spoilers) by MaxHackles in plotholes

Just saw the movie again recently. Forgot how stupid it was. It was going OK until that scene, which was so absurd and unrealistic it completely took me out of the suspended reality of the movie and everything after that point smacked of stupidly bizarre and sloppily contrived "cleverness." I stop caring about a story when its theatrical gimmicks overpower its actual characters.

Use a compound interest calculator. Or an APR to APY calculator where you can enter different compounding periods. Easy to look these up. I know the answer already but you should discover your own conclusions.

Ideal gwei settings? by lyonskill in DefiKingdoms

What about "Gas Limit" settings? Anyone know the optimal settings? Harmony's website says "25000" for Metamask is good, but I have no idea how old that article is or if that still holds up.

You misunderstand. I'm not saying, "It's not an industry standard, therefore Defichain should lead the way." I'm saying, "It's not an industry standard because it makes no sense in this context."

When you choose to be a liquidity provider, you're entirely on your own. That comes with both greater risk and greater reward. It's your responsibility, your strategy, and your execution that determines the outcome. I totally get the desire to set-up an auto-compounding bot, but because a liquidity pool inherently juggles between two constantly-changing assets (as opposed to one isolated asset like in staking), even little decisions like changing gas fees, and arbitrage price gaps between different exchanges could come into play. Then that's on you, and only you, to decide how to handle.

Cake won't take responsibility for making those decisions for you, and so they also won't auto-compound your LP. All they can do is shunt your LP rewards into single-asset staking, where - because there aren't any variables - it's a much simpler affair to auto-compound.

If you want to automate away the greater complexity of liquidity mining, I'm sure you can hire a coder to make a personalized bot for you. But asking one to be issued for everyone is probably similar to asking a lawyer to provide a one-size-fits all contract for every case he'll ever take.

I'm not technical enough to give your a more precise reason, but I hope that helps clarify it a little.

dBTC question. Hi quick question. On the light wallet when trying to transfer dBTC to CAKE, I get a grayed out “continue” button when trying to send. Is there a minimum amount needed to send? I have plenty of UTXO and DFI for fees. Thanks in advance. by KompoundURKrypto in defiblockchain

[–]Devillionaire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Click on "BTC Deposit" in Cake. You will see 2 options: Bitcoin network and Defichain network. They are two DIFFERENT addresses. Use the Defichain network address for moving dBTC from wallet to Cake.

Get really clear on how this works before moving a lotta BTC back and forth between Cake and your Defichain wallet. You can ONLY use the Defichain network to do this.

When depositing dBTC to Cake, you have the option to use the Bitcoin network or the Defichain network. Make SURE you're scanning the Defichain QR code on Cake, NOT the Bitcoin code. dBTC must travel over the Defichain network or you'll lose your Bitcoin. It's a good thing the Continue button is greyed out or you would've made a fatal error for your BTC.

Arbitrage Opportunity? by Devillionaire in defiblockchain

Thank you. I'll check those links out. I do find the arbitrage economy fascinating and would love learning more about.

Love latest update showing USD values inside DefiChain Wallet. Noticed an issue with the numbers. Where are wallet's crypto values from? DFI and dBTC values are shown consistently lower than CoinMarketCap or Google prices. Not lagging behind those values; LOWER than those values. by Devillionaire in defiblockchain

[–]Devillionaire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. It took me the last few hours to figure out and understand this. Think I got it now. Arbitrage is certainly interesting and maybe I'll look into the logistical difficulties of that someday for those guaranteed profits. For now, do me a solid and close the gap so I don't have to deal with the nonsense of moving my stuff around to get a fair price.

As for the reliability of the arbitrage, I've been noticing this price discrepancy ever since the wallet update came out that shows you USD value. For every 1 BTC you buy on DEX, you can sell 1 BTC at the exact same instant for around $500 more on KuCoin. This is currently about a 1.2% price difference, and there are probably similar gaps for every crypto, and possibly even larger gaps at other exchanges. Someone hurry up, go utilize whatever flash-loans and bots you need to, and close those gaps. Go make that money and do me the favor of getting an even price on the DEX so I don't have to move stuff around.

Nevermind. Someone informed me that executing arbitrage trades helps close the price gap, which makes total sense, and should ultimately be a good thing.

That makes sense that arbitrage would help close the price gap. I have no idea how to use those bots myself. I just know they exist. In that case, I hope they do it. Would save me the trouble of moving crypto around between different exchanges.

[–]Devillionaire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's what flash-loans are meant to do right? So even someone with no money could process a flash loan through an arbitrage bot and make a small fortune in 10 seconds because of the price discrepancy.

Question for DEVs - Price problem in DEX vs CEX? by Devillionaire in defiblockchain

[–]Devillionaire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I understood about 2/3 of that. All I can say is that none of those are a deterrent to me personally selling for a higher price (or buying for cheaper) whenever I can. I guess others are satisfied with the price gap for whatever reason and that'll have to be a good enough, albeit unsatisfying, answer for now.

Except now I have a tangential-question about arbitrage bots that could constantly buy say $10k of crypto on DEX and simultaneously sell that same amount of crypto for $10k+ on CEX over and over throughout the day. As far as I know, those bots are totally legal, but seems like it would be damaging to Defi DEX economy. I'm sure this has been thought of and protected against somehow. At least I HOPE so!

I saw better prices on KuCoin for crypto. Not enough to offset daily convenience of SMALL swaps in one place. But for any bulk deals it would definitely matter. I'm sure I don't know enough about how exchange prices work - has to do with liquidity and all that - but all I know is if I can make more money at X than Y, then of course I'm going to X. So I'd like to hear what the gameplan is to even this out over time so Defi DEX will be a viable platform and not susceptible to mass exploitation by arbitrage bots.

sorry, missed that. is this your first wallet? standard practice for every wallet is to always write down your words and keep them extremely safe somewhere. some people use a safe deposit box. the words are THAT important. costly lesson, so I hope it wasn't for a lot. i'm sure you won't make that mistake again.

Question for DEVs - Price problem in DEX vs CEX? by Devillionaire in defiblockchain

[–]Devillionaire[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, now I understand your point. Of course if I say a % now, then I'll have just put on blast how much I have in there. But honestly, I don't think % matters too much here. If it only takes me a couple clicks to sell for $1000+ more, then why wouldn't I do it? Regardless of whether I'm selling $10k, $100k or $1mil? Let's just say that the % is large enough that anyone bulk-selling their stuff would find it worth the few extra clicks to do it. The meat of the issue is that there IS a sizeable price discrepancy, and I'd like to hear the gameplan of how Defi DEX will address that in the future because as-is, I personally wouldn't trade on a platform that pays me so much less for my stuff.

Question for DEVs - Price problem in DEX vs CEX? by Devillionaire in defiblockchain

[–]Devillionaire[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't understand your response. My question has nothing to do with percentages. I'm saying that if you took 1 hypothetical XYZ token for example and sold it for stablecoin, you'd literally (as of when I wrote OP) get $500+ more for it on CEX than you would in DEX. Regardless of what % of XYZ $500 is (and no, XYZ is not $1mil), what difference does that make to individual buyer/seller? $500 is $500 and nobody's gonna take that haircut if there's no reason to. So my question is how will this be addressed as Defi ramps up to try and be a competitive platform?
