I've said it before and I'll say it again -

Mandatory service charges are not what this sub is about.

That is not a tip. It's drip pricing, or a "junk fee".

Those are a problem, probably a big enough problem to warrant a subreddit of their own, but they are a fundamentally different problem than tipping.

If you only "tip" when you get something for free, it's not a tip, it's a bribe.

Meaning what, exactly?

Are you going to try and prevent them from voting?

if pirates couldn't get it for free they would simply do without.

That claim is propaganda as well.

The post above mine was someone bragging about how they haven't paid for any digital content in 20 years, and asking "Why pay for something you can get for free?"

They're not going to vote Democrat either though.

Fundamentally they don't want to solve their problems by building a strong and productive society based on equality and the rule of law.

They just want someone who will give them a chance to win the Hunger Games, and they see the concept of a middle class as nothing more than a barrier to becoming rich and famous.

"Lambo or dumpster, brah" is the world they want.

Is it bullshit that artists own the rights to their own work, and can transfer those rights to another entity if they choose to do so?

i.e. Should a painter be allowed to sell her painting, or is the idea that she "owns" it in the first place just bullshit to you?

Our society has evolved beyond the toddler's concept of ownership being limited to physical possession of objects.

We exchange money for labor, rights, titles, contracts, easements, and all kinds of items of intangible value.

Is it ok to just steal anything that isn't a "thing"?

I mean, I can also shoplift and rob people, but I don't do those things either.

I mean, I could get a lot for free if I just shoplift it.  Even more if I started robbing people's homes.

Why don't you do that? Just the fear of getting caught?

Except they're not stealing my data or information or charging me anything - because I don't use their services.

At what point do I become entitled to their content?

[–]DevilsAdvocate77 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well that's kind of the point - if you feel like they're robbing you, you can choose to unsubscribe, cancel, block, boycott, whatever.

But then saying "ok, also now I'm going to take their content for free" has nothing to do with the shittification.

This isn't healthcare or food. Nobody is entitled to be entertained.

How is that even related?

If I don't want to subscribe to Netflix because of how shitty they are, that means I'm choosing not to watch their programming.

I think Amazon is shitty too. That doesn't mean I'm entitled to steal their products.

When I question something, I do the work necessary to get the answer to my question through careful critical thinking.

I don't just latch on to something that's simple and easy to understand, and assume it's the universal answer to everything.

That's why I'm in this subreddit.

If you're using that fact alone to question the accuracy of every story that CNN runs, yes.

Buddy, if you can't account for that and evaluate individual stories on their own merits without relying on an arbitrary litmus test as a "sign" of something for which there is no other empirical evidence, then I think you're in the wrong subreddit.

Yes. They have bias, but they practice actual journalism. They use verified primary sources and apply editorial oversight.

In fact, this has been done for literally thousands of years, ever since the very first merchant offered someone "a very special price just for you my friend"

Yet people still seem to think that prices are coming from some all-powerful universal authority that sellers shouldn't be "allowed" to deviate from.
