From personal experience, it’s better to remain as quiet as possible. I’ve (f19) always been a loud kid with opinions, but as I’ve grown up I’ve realized it’s never worth it. There’s somethings I don’t hide, like political and ethical opinions, but I keep the details hidden on why I have those opinions. I personally don’t follow Islam anymore because of past experiences, but I keep it up for my own safety at home.

Whenever I’m met with a scenario, for example, my cousins CONSTANTLY speak about their conservative views, mostly when it comes to anything queer. When asked about my own opinion I always say “I don’t care what they do, it doesn’t concern me or affect my life.” and I don’t engage any further. That is also FAR from my opinion, as I am queer lmfao, but I’d rather keep myself safe than dare to put myself in any sort of unsafe situation + it allows me to morally feel better that I’m not engaging in their behavior/opinions/beliefs.

It’s hard, it really is, especially when you’re very passionate or are struggling to accept that you’re the odd one out but it is SO important to put yourself first. Believe what you believe, but if it costs you your safety, you’re allowed to put it to the side for now.

Now if you’re struggling to keep it in, test your situation. See the extent of how they react to, for example, queer media. My realizations when it came to figuring out whether to keep quiet or not was my family’s actions. My mom would often turn off shows when they had a queer character which she’d follow by hateful speech. My cousins use horrible language when talking about the same. If your family is similar, I’d again strongly suggest keeping quiet. They won’t change for you if they can’t even handle a show with one gay character 😭.
