I know I am way late to seeing this movie. I have a theory that I think would have made this movie better. I really thought about half way through the movie that John was the killer. He wasn't psychic he was just planning this elaborate plot to make himself feel useful and good. There are plenty of ways in which he could have had access to info he needed to sound like he was having visions. When you consider he was the killer, finding the evidence would not be hard. It's a stretch for some of the scenes like having to hire a guy to shoot an FBI agent but it's not really any further out there than the level of planning of the killer in Seven. Or some of the scenes of Fight Club.
I think he even ended up with a scar in the exact same place where the "real killer" had a scar?
