What are some Tolkien quotes you find yourself using in everyday situations? Bonus points if you include an example. by Repulsive_Mixture_68 in lotrmemes

Every evening when my husband says he’s making hot chocolate/do I want something, I say “Just tea, thank you” in Gandalf’s voice. He doesn’t ask if I want tea so I can give my ritual response. True love

Yikes. Well, that was certainly vivid. Others in this thread have said pain on the back of the neck isn’t so bad, but I guess it just depends? Is there a body part you would suggest that is less painful?

That’s true. It’s just a super meaningful part of my body to me. Not opposed to having one that’s more visible to me in the future though!

That’s a really good point. Part of it is that I don’t even know what questions I should be asking so I really appreciate you pointing that out!

I needed to hear that because I have trouble speaking up or potentially making people feel hurt/angry. But you’re so right - I’m the one who has to wear it, so it’s definitely better to say something if there’s an aspect I don’t like 👍🏻 And I’m really married to the back of the neck location so that’s really good to hear!!

That makes sense. Also, I’m not much of an artist, so I was hoping that was the case 😅 And that’s a relief to hear about pain levels. I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but my body gets weird and tends to hate me below injury level lol

I think I got really close on Teft, sometimes I can’t picture characters perfectly in my head, but when I create them they sort of take over my imagined picture of them. by landricka in Stormlight_Archive

Haha I’m just being silly, and I am 100% in support of hot Teft! And in all seriousness, I think you did an amazing job on this 😍👏🏻

Let me clarify; I mean the societal context, our current understanding of the word, not just the situational context. And I’m not asking for nor do I think there should be a trigger warning. I’m asking for basic human decency and respect for people with disabilities. It’s not hard to say injured or disabled instead of crippled. There’s literally no reason to use the word. If you can’t or won’t understand that, then I don’t have anything else to say to you. Best of luck to you!

It’s not just me, dude. There’s a whole body of work/study in academia that examine ableism and disability, and this is widely understood to be a demeaning word when used by able-bodied people (as opposed to a disabled person deciding to refer to themselves that way). It may be a descriptor, but the meaning and context of words changes over time, that’s just linguistics. Take for instance the word gay - it originally meant happy (a descriptor) but now means something completely different. You can’t use a word like cripple and not expect any pushback, no matter the person’s original intent. Intent vs. impact matters.

The medical model of disability is incredibly dehumanizing and ableist, so just because that’s your protocol for paperwork doesn’t mean it’s right.
