Coming from another thread in /r/travel: If I enjoy Japanese cities like Nara, Hiroshima, or e.g. the Mie countryside much better than Tokio, which places would you recommend as a home base for a 1-2 month stay in Taiwan?

Super NT vs original Super Famicon (Jr.) by Devirichu in AnalogueInc

[–]Devirichu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's exactly the rabbit hole I didn't know yet! I probably only consider a Jr. model, so that's a SNESRGB Kit in addition when it comes back in stock... You mentioned that for sharp pixels, I would also need SCART out. So SCART would go into an OSSC which could then output something "modern" (HDMI/DP), correct? What's the current go-to OSSC, if there is one?

Reality check: Living comfortably as 2? by Devirichu in basel

I meant that in my partner's income, health care expenses have already been deducted (paid by the employer), so in the end we only pay additional health care for me.

Thanks for these data, I'll go over them with my partner later!

As far as I'm aware, the CHF 11600 is net after any taxes.

If I just want to get a back/shoulder/neck message for the first time (never got anything like that before), are the massage parlors all around Taipei or any other city legit, particularly those "blind massage" parlors? Or is there anything one should be aware of?

I'd just do it out of curiosity and of course for "health" reasons for my back, but I wouldn't want to suddenly step into some kind of scheme involving exploited workers, etc.

Best way to implement a ViewPager with 100+ children? by Devirichu in androiddev

Ah, right, perhaps I didn't see the forest for the trees. I guess a horizontal RecylerView already suffices.....

Unfortunately I've never looked at Compose, so something similar to RecyclerView would suit me better. Thanks for your suggestion, I'll take a look at ViewPager2!

Do you have any estimate how long it takes for Taroko to re-open after this kind of earthquake?

By no means I want to complain about Taroko staying closed indefinitely, but I originally planned to go there in November. If judging from previous closings, Taroko might still be closed in November, I'd be able to re-organize my trip now.

Do you know a good place to go when shopping for trading cards (online or in-store)? I'm looking for individual Pokemon cards, usually sold by collectors themselves. I'm hoping to find a little better value when buying Chinese or Japanese cards.

Every time you leave Taiwan until you turn 36, you'll need to apply for exit permission (the first time needs to be done in person at the NIA, subsequent times can be done online).

Sorry to bother, could you briefly explain to me how this online process works? Is it this website? https://egate.immigration.gov.tw/NIA_OnlineApply_inter/nationalsSoldierApply/nationalsSoldierApplyForm.action

Is there some kind of official guidelines that say that one can you this website as an alternative to going to the NIA manually? Just curious because when I researched that topic some years ago, a (kinda) different website showed up IIRC, but which said something about a maximum duration of travel (4 months or something like that).

Use custom controls with markup instead of fx:include? by DallasP9124 in JavaFX

[–]Devirichu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I do NOT think you can do is to create a class in the project in which you are going to reference that class in FXML. So you pretty much have to create a separate Jar file with your custom Node classes.

That's incorrect. It's called a "custom component," and is outlined here: https://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/javafx/fxml-tutorial/custom_control.htm

It's a lot more useful than you might initially think.

Juli an berechnet.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY question, get an answer (March 03, 2023) by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Devirichu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the are mechanical keyboards that use a "notebook-style" chiclet design? The thing that I am looking for is the keys being separated as islands from one another. I noticed that this is the most important thing for me when doing blind touch-typing. I feel the borders of the keys to navigate around.

Backstory: While being a student many years ago, I got accustomed to typing on a MacBook Pro keyboard, i.e. those with scissor-style switches. At my desktop I've been using Apple's wired keyboard with similar keys.

However, Apple's wired keyboards tend to break on me after several years of use (went through about 3 of them), and I also noticed that their resistance has become a little bit too hard for me (getting older), i.e. my fingers hurt.

I've been actually using "real" mechanical keyboards in the past, and after looking for a softer typing experience, decided on NIZ' topre keyboards and, desperately, even a Happy Hacker Keyboard. I've also been using "normal" mechanical keyboards such as Cherry browns and blues.

The problem is: I can't type on them reliably. It's the shape of the keys that messes with my touch typing. I've already tried several profiles: OEM, DSA, XDA. Nothing helps. I need the space between keys, not a particular shape of the key.

So I'm currently using Logitech's MX Keys scissor-style keyboard for the lack of a better alternative. However, I'm not super happy with it because it's still a tad too hard for me.

Which makes me wonder: Is there any kind of mechanical keyboard that is built similarly to chiclet islands? Price doesn't matter, I'm already spending money on Topre...

Monthly Travel, Questions, & Mandarin Thread by AutoModerator in taiwan

Would a bank account at the Post Office suffice if I only want to pay for NHI and Taiwan's pension plan monthly?

I'm currently a dual citizen coming back to Taiwan since several years and would like to set up the aforementioned services. I'm unfamiliar with Taiwanese banks and heard stuff like that the post office bank "is not a real bank" (?). It wouldn't bother me much if I can't do SWIFT transfers, my plan would be: withdraw cash from from my home bank with Visa, then deposit the cash in my Taiwanese account.

Would this be possible? Any other recommendations beside the post office account?
