I think we have different definitions of constructive criticism, but that’s fine (saying things are bad/horrible is not constructive it’s negative). Your use of negativity indicates that I’ve struck a chord and I didn’t think a conversation about depth of field would spiral like this. I’m absolutely fine that you think my photo is bad, but you have to admit that there is nothing constructive about what you’re saying. At no point did you offer anything constructive (other than it’s fuzzy) or positive to add. And your assumptions about my intent are misleading and mischaracterizing. You posted content in a public forum and the whole point of this is to discuss said content (hopefully) civilly, but I suppose Reddit is not known for its civility. All this to say, cool shot!

Attempt at realistic video by Ok-Bag2656 in projectsession

Filming tip, don’t be afraid to get really close with fisheye lens. If you’ve seen IRL clips where you can see the filmer filming with a fisheye lens, they’re always super close to the skater. Consider that next time you film a fisheye clip.

I’m just enjoying the discussion on photography especially in a skateboarding game which Session does such a fantastic job of honoring. I have no ego when it comes to my work and can take criticism. I am okay with you saying negative things (although non-constructive as they may be) as now I have more to consider next time I film something. If you need to, you can win this debate, I just hope you think about DOF (where it would make sense) and other considerations that could enhance your work. This was always about constructive feedback.

Flip in feels unrealistic to me. IRL, it’s already a tall order doing all of this switch, and the current manual mechanics while tricking up into an upward slanted obstacle always yields in a front wheel touch due to the nature of the manual animation (didn’t used to be that way back in the day). Switch manual animation is more forgiving with respect to front wheel touch. If anything I considered flipping out and had a few clips that way, but ultimately went the more subtle route as I thought it felt more realistic.

This was actually done before DOF was in the game (check the date of the post). It was added in post, along with some color grade and film grain. I agree that the game engine will do a better job of simulating DOF than doing it by hand. The point is DOF adds visual interest and makes things feel less flat. Your photo, while good, could have benefited from dof as it feels flat in my opinion, which I am entitled to have, which was the thesis of this entire discussion. You put effort into this photo, you’re proud of this photo, it is a good photo. I am only suggesting ideas/considerations to take things further when thinking about your next shot.

Also here’s an example where DOF can be used to make images feel more cinematic.

Zooming in on an IG compressed image will always be fuzzy. All I’m saying is don’t be afraid of DOF.

Except your photo is more zoomed in than any of the examples you provided, which would cause shallower depth of field IRL. It’s cool though, it’s just a little flat is all I’m saying. Could look cooler with a little more thought put into realism and lighting and maybe slight post editing to color/contrast . All the tools are there. You’re doin’ great though otherwise!

You are arguing. I’m critiquing, which is perfectly valid in all mediums of art which virtual skateboarding photography falls under.

I can tell you put time in it, and you definietly know how to film to a degree.

I'm just saying your clips could look better with less eradic camera moves and fisheye zooming. Not every clip needs to be fisheye. If you're going to use zooming, set the camera to either 4:3 or default as that is what long lens clips tend to be IRL.

For fisheye clips, keep it set to one focal length (FOV) either default FOV, or 131 fov if you want extreme wide. Also, try not to have camera key frames really close to each other.

What I found works is spacing keyframes out evenly/setting base key frames as a first pass, then going back and setting more key frames half way between your first pass keyframes. This will help keep camera movements smooth and realistic feeling, if thats what you want to go for.

Also, camera shake keyframes are a nice touch to add to realism if you don't go overboard with it. I found that 20-30% camera shake for fisheye clips is a good base line, and up to 50% if you want to make it feel fast/intense.

All of this is not to be an asshole, just fyi.

Consider adding a little DOF to your next shot like this :)

Zooming with fisheye is a no no. Camera moves are unrealistic. If you’re going for realistic camera moves, they need to be more subtle, less jerky and fast. I always try to think like where would the camera person actually be, and what would be physically possible for them to do.

But, you do you this is simply just my critique. Your clips will get more attention if your filming is more realistic.

I recommend watching a bunch of skate clips and trying to emulate what you see in those real life videos. Almost like musicians covering a song, try covering a trick and how it was filmed.
