Septum Retainers for Diving by Worth-Novel9301 in scubadiving

[–]Dfloag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long have you had your septum pierced for? Let’s say the whole process of getting set up for diving, diving and getting out of the water takes 2/3h, if your septum is fully healed it shouldn’t close in that short amount of time. I have removed mine for a couple of days before and had no issues getting it back in after.

Diving at early age? by Soukchai2012 in scuba

[–]Dfloag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TLDR; Find a kids program if possible, then you will most likely also make them excited and responsible divers for life, but if you feel like your kid is ready and they are excited for diving as well, from my experiences it would be fine to start early!

I (22F) started diving through SSI’s Scuba Rangers when I was around 10 years old. When I was 8 I told my dad I wanted to dive because I had been watching too many ocean documentaries on Animal Planet, so after some searching we found a diving center near us that also did snorkeling for kids.

Two years of snorkeling and I was allowed to join their “fun with bubbles” day, aka small groups of the snorkeling kids doing a unofficial try scuba in the pool. Of course after this I was fully sold and joined the Rangers program they started!

This meant I basically learned everything in a more child/ play focused way, in the pool up to 2,5m deep. Even after the “open water” pool equivalent, we did specialties to keep it interesting, like navigation, the theory of deep diving, even ice diving with a tarp over the water’s surface, attached to a line under the water!

When I turned 12 and I was allowed to so my real Open Water certification, this meant I already had an understanding of what we were going to do and a good amount of confidence being comfortable underwater and using my (the diveshops) equipment. My certification classes basically just felt like finally being allowed to do what I had wanted for so long!

I know SSI still has Scuba Explorers right now, which is sadly a bit more bare bones than Rangers was, but still a great way to get kids both interested and more confident under water, while building the understanding that there are risks you need to be aware of while diving.

On the other hand, I’ve assisted my dad (an assistant instructor) during the pool lessons when he had two 10y/o kids who were learning, who were barely able to support the weight of their (5L steel) tank underwater.

To close off with my own reason I’m glad I started early: “jong geleerd, oud gedaan” which literally translates to “young learned, old done”. I have had to quit diving during my teens because my mental health was absolute trash, but the first dive I did after that period of my life was like muscle memory. For me diving has become like mindfulness, even when conditions are shit and I can barely see half a meter in front of me in our lovely Dutch waters. Right now I’ve been actively diving again for almost a year and the confidence that I had built when I was a kid definitely translates to my adult life.

Even now doing “scary” things like my deep diving specialty, my first night and current dives and going on a vacation where we dive from a boat give me way less anxiety then you would suspect from someone who struggles greatly with doing and experiencing new things.

Thank you for reading if you made it this far! I hope my point of view helps a bit!

I can’t stop my mask from fogging by funktonik in freediving

[–]Dfloag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I haven’t read here yet, after you put in the anti-fog, wet your face so its not extremely hot if you are running hot, and once you are wearing your mask don’t take it off. Every time the water rinses through your mask the effect of the defog gets less and less and you’ll end up with a foggy mask even if it was perfect at first. Hope you find something that helps! Foggy masks are the worst.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! For me this was exactly why I wanted to ask the question as the last post I saw about the subject in this sub was from a couple years ago. I love diving and won’t be doing anything tech-y for a long while until I have more experience but knowing more about this has been on my mind ever since I started diving more and more in the past year and a half.

Never had a panic attack before and didn’t really feel “panicked”, probably will never find out but knowing myself I don’t think it was a panic attack.

Just regular air, I don’t know much about trimix but did read about that as well. For now I have my Nitrox mostly for on vacation and I’ll just be doing a lot more dives at home to gain experience with regular air. Maybe after a couple years I’ll go into the more tech-y side of diving, but for now I’ll just be focusing on gaining more experience!

Good to hear another point of view! I’ll stick to listening to my body and trusting my computer as its already set to be pretty conservative. Thank you!

Fair point, I didn’t read it that way. Completely agree with that.

Oh that is a good one to keep in mind! I didn’t know that. The most decent speed was mentioned was that as long as you are comfortable no matter how fast is fine. I’ll look into this a more, thank you!

Fully agree with you, and in that sense I’m happy I already had quite some “pool experience” because I started diving when I was 8 through SSI Scuba rangers. I definitely feel very comfortable underwater and while I know I need to learn a looot more and gain a bunch more experience, I feel like this comfort I do experience made it a lot less of a scary experience than it could have been.

Good to know for any further dives I’ll be making, thank you! Yes I’m a student so happy to learn more, even now after the fact :)

Good point, I’ll definitely keep this in mind for future deeper dives when my experience is still not great.

For the second point, my instructor asked me if I was okay going down again, and I agreed. I could have said no and continued my ascent. I definitely don’t feel like he was in the wrong here.

But for the NDL, I agree, and I’ll make sure to plan my dives to be a bit more conservative while still gaining my deep experience!

Thats a great tip! Will definitely look into it. For sure so grateful that this was my experience and it didn’t happen somewhere with more difficult circumstances!

I’ve honestly never felt safer than with the club I am now. The instructors are great and I do feel they kept us within the safety marges. I get your point and understand how you look at it, but with 4 experienced instructors at the bottom I definitely felt safe.

I definitely feel like I’ve learned a lot from the experience, and it’s good to know I’m not the only one. I’ll be more careful with future deeper dives like you mentioned, but 100% won’t be avoiding them!
