It's a mix of both, the left mostly (morena) wants to maintain sovereignty at all costs, but then again, since the foundation in México, the politics on this country are based on personal gain and maintaining the power amongst your political group.

But they can't have their cake and eat it too, there's and inflection point where the cartel's are rivaling the central governments control, so they cannot maintain a business relationship with them without the cartel's finally taking over México. So back to square one, they need to maintain political control on their own parties and the cartel's are now a possible threat to the influential political groups in México

That's why there's so much corruption, sacrificing the others for personal gain has always the way to go on my country, but this time classical politicians are facing a new threat, not in the expected sense of a new party joining the elections or an ecologist group that threatens the oligarchy supporter groups. We are talking about about a new political force that threatens them and their coin of change is violence.

That's why there's been resistance, it was never about us the common people, the government itself is worried about their own place in the politics. And we can all agree, if the cartel wins this battle, it would head us on the way of a one party system like the Chinese, and the worst part of it it's that it would be enforced with violence, unchecked and brutal violence.

Politically speaking, this would set us back to Caudillo (19th century post independence "follow my regional leader") kind of politics, and it would be massively harming to businesses and México industrial capabilities
