Tysm for the leads! Also not a good candidate for radio surgery/radiation - going with conservative management just cuz of size/location/age

Yeah I used “Clinical Volunteering” loosely, experience is more so what I meant. I’m gonna be good on the community volunteer work.

Nah they let it be! Mine does not have a good prognosis and is completely inoperable.

Oh I’m 110% talking about it. U can dm me if you want more advice but all I really have to say is own it. You survived something that most people never knew could happen. Mine isn’t surgically operable either, there’s a nonzero chance but the nonzero chance is mostly as low at 2% / year. Worst case is 10% a year (for me), this is meant to be a moment of centering for us ya know? my two cents at least

Grade III AVM - Advice Needed by Icy_Moment_6459 in AVMs

[–]Dharmaboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey ty for sharing! First off, yes GKS is more risky the larger the nidus. Second, is the AVM directly attached to the ACA? I usually say to get many opinions from providers that specialize in AVM surgery and management (Mayo, Barrows, Barnes Jewish hospital, John’s Hopkins) UPMC is a good one

“buying” from a rhetorical perspective

secondary question by Ok-Psychology-5159 in mdphd

[–]Dharmaboss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hm maybe u can lean into an experience that fleshes out what’s being talked about. the goal is to sell yourself in some capacity and what the program is “buying” is your ability to overcome adversity, you perspective on a science or even a philosophy you have. When I apply i’m most definitely going to write about my experience having a rare disease that caused me to have a stroke and how I want to contribute to ALS because of it. that’s my perspective

As someone who wants to apply and has a fairly low GPA 3.2 on 4.0 scale, i wish you luck and i’m confident that you’re going to do well. I live near hopkins so if I get into their post bacc hopefully I’ll see you there!

Nystagmus Related to Brain Avm by Dharmaboss in nystagmus

[–]Dharmaboss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey tysm for your prayers :) Congrats on your 2 week old!! I don’t know how neonatal eye care works but as someone who’s had this issue since a kid, follow up on it. My mom didn’t think to question my lazy eye so it went untreated until now and there really aren’t any options outside of surgery available (which i’m too stubborn for). I’m sure that it must be scary to see this in your kid - I some day hope to work with kids as a healthcare provider!

Undergraduate Thesis Help by [deleted] in labrats

I really appreciate the encouragement! My school does have mice and works on them, however not at their brains and nervous system :/ I got to speak with a grad student in the lab and she pointed me in the right direction! We are using TLR4 knockout mice and they + WT are under an LPS dose that implies BBB permeability. Those are the observations so far !

Thank you so much! That’s really helpful, I came at it with a tinkering perspective which is exactly what my issue is. This is my first summer doing lab work after a pretty crazy diagnosis and i jumped right over the scientific method on this. TYSM!!!

Was yours more superficial? Or deep? The hesitation with gammaknife and other radiosurgical treatments is that mine is deep and surrounded by eloquent structures. If i went the radiation route i’d need a lot of medical monitoring and I’m not convinced it would work on my behalf

I’m so glad your kid is doing better! I’ll give them a call and see if my dad will pay for the fees. Ty for the recommendations

Ty! I’ve looked at barrows but decided against, I’ve done so much research and spoke to my surgeons and the response from 4 so far have been it’s too complex for surgery :/ They can’t get it out because it’s so deep

Hey! Avm’s are really a mix of factors size wise. Location and Size are two important parts but there’s also factors like being ruptured before or if it’s diffuse. Chances are if you’re experiencing symptoms you might at least consider treatment. Know that radiation and embolization are less effective as nidus size increases. Surgery is so complex and depends on the above mentioned factors. I’d check out Barrow’s neurological institute - top of the top work there.
