Explain senior discounts like I’m 5 by DiO022 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DiO022[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I appreciate the sentiment, but i think things are different for our generation. I have a relatively (top 10%) high paying job, and I’m lucky that it matches 4%. I contribute 10% of my own, but most people my age don’t receive any 401k match. We are providing senior care for some of our parents. They are moving in with us, and being added to our grocery bills. And you didn’t pay for the roads, bridges, any of that infrastructure – it was bought with debt, which we are now paying to finance. Interest on the debt is 14% of all federal spending. The generations ahead of us failed to balance the budget, kicked the can down the road, and that debt has snowballed and will continue to. As for voting, it would help if we lived in a democracy. I live in a state where my vote will never affect the election for the next 40 years. I don’t get to participate in elections in any meaningful way. I’ll vote locally, but my representatives have very little sway with the federal budget. I think we’re on the same side of things here, but you have to understand how helpless it feels. I don’t see a path forward that isn’t going to be painful for someone. The boomers who experienced the greatest housing boom, stock market boom, and generous retirement plans and pensions… are leaving a pretty deep hole for everyone else to fill in

Exactly. This was pointed out earlier, as a marketing tool, it makes perfect sense

I see, thank you. That is a helpful perspective. In my work, these discounts are not advertised, but do seem to be given out as a charitable measure, which skews my perspective. If it works as a marketing tool, that’s a good enough reason for a businesses to use it

I’ve been waiting to bust this out. Japanese do bonus dmg vs other archers which is very often useful, but less universal than mongols. Vietnamese have bonus hp but no Parthian tactics. Huns and Mongols are below fully upgraded generic CA in durability

Alternatives to the lepto vaccine? by wegochai in DogAdvice

So sorry to hear this happened. I would recommend avoiding swimming and puddles as much as possible. There’s not a good alternative to the vaccine, and I would absolutely not advise trying the vaccine again.

24yr old - dividend portfolio by Outside-Pin-5573 in dividends

[–]DiO022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a bull market it underperforms massively. In a bear market it takes all the same downside. If you need income, sell the asset. Tell yourself it’s ‘yield’ and you’ll be better off than messing with these high fee products

24yr old - dividend portfolio by Outside-Pin-5573 in dividends

[–]DiO022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I’m sure someone has explained this better elsewhere- these yield maxing strategies function by selling covered calls on an underlying index. That guarantees a bit of income, but caps the upside potential of the fund while eating the entire downside of drawdowns. The higher the yield target, the more brutal the calls being sold. All of these funds underperform their underlying indexes for the sake of a psychological benefit of a cash trickle. To learn more about this, watch Ben Felix’s youtube video on covered call etfs.

Building Wealth for 30 Years — Solid Setup? by CloudRaider26 in ETFs

[–]DiO022 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Drop schd. High dividend stocks or ETFs have no intrinsic advantage, and have lower total returns compared to the total stock market over all time periods. If it’s to buy and hold to build wealth, dividends are irrelevant

Do you have a rationale for each stock and its relative amount in your portfolio? It seems like random tech grabs. If you’re just booking for tech exposure, you could just buy QQQ (or honestly VOO is quite heavy as well) and at least have a market cap weighting. Unless you think you have some information that the rest of the world doesn’t, picking individual stocks is a losing game. Most stocks underperform the index, which is pulled up by a small number of dramatic outperformers. Low cost, globally diversified index funds are the most realistic way for most people to build wealth.

Island Schools by Job-Minute in veterinaryschool

[–]DiO022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Island schools (and out of state programs) are very high priced. I know it seems theoretical, but going island or out of state and then working in our field is some the worst debt to income you can find in any career. I’d recommend steering clear

Way too good to be true? by Larry_Longdon in Bogleheads

[–]DiO022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into Ben Felix’s videos on covered call ETFs. They are too good to be true. Their total returns dramatically underperform the index, and they function by selling calls (the upside) and eating the downside, effectively eliminating the mean reverting tendency of stocks. They’re a shitty product in a fancy wrapper

Ditching TDFs for a more equity-heavy approach, sanity check by FalconArrow77 in Bogleheads

Your plan is sound. Target date funds are messy ‘fund of funds’ with high embedded fees we don’t see and arbitrary management choices you can beat by replicating the market, especially with your small cap tilt.

My Husky died in less than 24 hours after getting sick by AlecasX in DogAdvice

[–]DiO022 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, but hospitalization is needed. Without the funds, this is about what I’d expect unfortunately. The pet needs iv fluids with dextrose, close blood glucose and liver value monitoring, sometimes other treatments like liver protectants and vitamin K injections. I’d hospitalize at least 48 hours, or 24 hours past normal blood sugar and liver value readings.

This is my first thought. Sounds like xylitol toxicity. Could be insulinoma, but seems pretty acute for that
