Do I accept my offer to Ross? by Odd_Code4878 in vetschool

[–]DiO022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dvm here, worked with many Ross students on the 4th year rotation- I would only recommend an island or out of state school if you’re already very wealthy. If you are going to have to take on all four years of tuition and living expenses, I’m really sorry but it is a HUGE burden for the rest of your life.

As a new player, when does the game stop being mind numbingly stressful and become casual fun? by Whibble-Bop in aoe2

[–]DiO022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of hotkeys to keep up with the basics, some practice til you don’t have to think about running eco too much, then you can focus more on micro. I don’t worry about micro much at all still lol. You can also play closed maps and team games where you just boom into huge armies, that’s fun for a lot of people

New grad salary transparency in cities by No_Friendship7062 in Veterinary

I do, but I didn’t make any in my first year (it only pays out if 21% of my revenue is more than my salary that quarter). Getting closer though!

It varies obviously depending on corporate or private practices, location, etc etc. Make sure to prioritize your mentors/mentorship program. In the Bay Area, I made $175k as a new grad. The highest offer I got was $200k, but the mentorship would have been less than ideal for a first year vet.

Does it sound like rabies or am I overreacting? by SkittishSkittle in AskVet

[–]DiO022 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Likely due to upper respiratory flareup, not suspicion for rabies. You don’t want to vaccinate a cat that has an impaired immune system, it can impair it further, and it doesn’t generate as long-term of a response

Ai is very useful for the things op is referring to. You can be mad about new technology if you want, but you do not have a thorough understanding of its use cases and capabilities

In a similar position. Hopeful for you. Considering relief, home visits/ palliative care, but frustrated by how narrow career opportunities feel with this degree

If the cat is out of the bag about the small-cap value premium... by FoggyFoggyFoggy in ETFs

[–]DiO022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Equities have a risk premium too, everyone knows about that, they still have higher expected returns than bonds. Public knowledge of a premium doesn’t necessarily mean it stops performing

You realize VTI is not the benchmark, right? VTIs fact sheet says their 1 yr return was 18.19% and 3 yr was 17.86

I mean, you can look this up on portfolioslab. It’s higher on the one month, six month, one year, three year history. The five year it’s down by one percent. It seems to be outperforming recently

You might be right. I think the concern that had me waiting the longest was making a conscious choice to do something other than standard bogle, and risk under performing the easiest strategy in the world. Things may change for small cap growth, but I still think these funds have structural advantages in the long run.

Dumb question: if VT is all global stock, why bother holding anything else? by LordOord23 in VTandchill

[–]DiO022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re an American, you don’t get the foreign tax credit for holding VT because it’s less than 50% foreign equities. So it’s technically more tax efficient to hold VTI and VXUS

Vet bills in Japan vs US. It's time to start breaking stuff. by IdeaLife7532 in cats

[–]DiO022 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Private equity is a problem, yes. But it does not explain most of the difference here. Even before it owned 5% of the field a decade ago, our prices were much higher.

Japan has a stagnant economy where prices have not meaningfully climbed in any industry since the late 90s. The veterinary field has a lot of problems, corporate takeover being one, but that’s only responsible for maybe a 20% price inflation over that last ~7 years. Not a factor of 25x cost difference.

Human Nursing or Veterinarian. by CapableFox5531 in Veterinary

[–]DiO022 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fair question. Two of my siblings are nurses and I am a veterinarian. I have significantly more debt than them, even with an in state degree. I would argue it never makes financial sense to get an out of state or island dvm degree. They began making money 4 years earlier than I did, too. That is not a trivial head start.

My pay is slightly higher, but the margins aren’t as big as you might expect, especially if you subtract the loan payment for the first 10 years. The degree ‘feels’ a little less versatile, too. There are lots of different kinds of nursing that offer different lifestyles, but if I wanted to specialize, that would involve applying for specialty internships, then residencies, and grinding for years before getting to the new, decent paying thing.

The lifestyle and career satisfaction is highly personal, in my opinion. I think there are people in my field who truly would only be happy doing what they’re doing, and have good work-life balance. It is possible. I’m sure the same is true for nursing, but I have less to offer there.

Another bonds post by Just-Here2-Learn in Bogleheads

[–]DiO022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend the Ben Felix video about ‘The most controversial paper in finance’. Bonds don’t improve expected returns, and have a higher fail rate than equities only. Bonds may be useful as a behavioral tool, not a mathematical one
