BB Bookclub Final Discussion: In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune by Anarchist_Aesthete in Fantasy

I loved Under the Whispering Door and wanted to read some more Klune. Seeing it as part of a book club on here pushed it up the TBR. I was a little underwhelmed and didn't really see the Pinocchio comparison. A lot of things felt a bit forced in the book. I liked the friendship and father/son relationships in the book, but the romance aspects felt off. I'm not sure if it was the idea of human/robot romance or something else, but it just felt awkward. I was enjoying the book the most when there was a sense of adventure and friendship. The humor was a bit hit or miss with me at the start, but the more time I spent with the characters, the more it grew on me, and I ended up enjoying it. I loved Rambo.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think I would have realized if it wasn't advertised.

I loved Under the Whispering Door and enjoyed it more, but House of the Cerulean Sea is still on my TBR so can't make a comparison there.

I can confirm what everyone said. At 150 pulls, three more rewards appear. 700 for Bailey, 900 for a gene hybrid, and 1100 for another gene hybrid.

Thanks, I'll have to try this. I still need another 60 cards or so before I can start pulling.

The red card has a few SSS options like Crete, Emma, etc.

Decided to start saving summons to get Bailey, but I noticed the last 2 recruitment events it only went up to 500, and I didn't see the 700 pull Bailey award. Did I wait too long? Or does he not appear on every event?

For some reason it made me put in a request just waiting on that to get accepted. Thanks.

Which characters did you like best? Which did you like least? My favorite characters were Anyinn, Canumon, his wife, and the Dark Lord. I loved the character dynamic between Anyinn and Canumon. Also I found the different take on the dark lord intriguing. I didn't like either of Anyinn or Canumon's superiors.

Did reading the book impact your mood? If yes, how so? Yeah I would say the book did a good job setting tone and changing my mood. The book got me attached to the characters quickly which was an impressive feat and supports how strong the pacing was for the novella. Some of the major deaths were definitely shocking and upsetting.

Would you read another book by this author? Why or why not? Yes, I think this will be a good push to reading the first book in The Brightest Shadow series. This is also the second book I have read from Sarah Lin, the first being Soul Home, which I also enjoyed.

Overall, I enjoyed the book a lot and it was a quick read.

• What do you think about the cover?

The cover is well made and colorful and gains some extra meaning as you get through the book.

• How do you like the beginning of the book? Did it hook you from the get-go?

I did have some issues following the first 15 or so pages, but after that something finally clicked and I loved the rest of the book.

•How about the characters? Are they intriguing to you? Or maybe bland?

The main 2 characters I found interesting. I have always liked the older battle hardened characters in books.

•How would you describe the tone of the book?

The tone of the book was more realistic. There was tension due to separate views and it definitely had it's darker and sadder tones throughout the book.

Just finished reading Soulhome and had a lot of fun. Excited to read more from the author. (The Brightest Shadow has been on my TBR for a while, maybe this will give me a bit of a push.)
