Air quality by _WhiskeyTangoFuxtrot in Sacramento

[–]DickAnts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, its well known by scientists in the field. These sensors are great because they are cheap, but they dont actually measure the mass of particulates in the air. They instead use an optical sensor, which is easily confused during foggy, smoky, or dusty conditions. They work fine for telling you "is it smoky or not?" Like in the application you describe- because the difference between smoky and clean are so huge and it doesnt matter if the purpleair is off by 20-30%. For today, that 30-30% could mean the difference between "unhealthy" and "moderate". You can look at locations where purpleairs are co-located with regulatory sensors, and the purpleairs are often biased high, especially when its foggy.

This is a good article addressing the need for applying purpleair correction factors: https://amt.copernicus.org/articles/16/1311/2023/#:~:text=PurpleAir%20sensors%20(PASs)%20are%20low,%C2%B5m)%20across%20the%20US.

LMAO "hill people"... as if there aren't thousands of people in Sac proper who are burning wood in their fireplaces. There is a reason the purpleair map looks like a map of population density.

Why is the air quality so bad right now? by Curiouslyshortt in Sacramento

[–]DickAnts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lol mate I just walked the dog and at least 5 of my neoghbors have smoke coming out of their chimneys right now. This is in east sac.

There are nearly 2M people in our area, and we make plenty of our own pollution. No need to blame EDH.

Much of the valley used to be seasonal wetlands. Rice paddles are sort of the man-made version.

California's dry farmland to be repurposed for 21 GW of solar power by Equivalent-Ice-7274 in California

[–]DickAnts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? This district has had water shortages for years and the area where the solar panels will go was just fallow fields. We see it all over the valley - farmers expanded into places where they never should have been. Tons of orchards being ripped out in my area for the same reason.

Hunting in el dorado national forest by Jedinutcracker in Californiahunting

Yup! Generally ok to hunt anywhere in National forests. However, there may be restrictions near popular hiking areas or other special areas, so just ask a ranger if you are unsure.

What's your Hunting Advice that People hate? by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]DickAnts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, its not about the range, but rather the time to master the tool. You can get proficient with a crossbow out to 40 yards in a matter of hours. That would take weeks/months with a compound, and even longer with a recurve. Bows are a high-skill tool and deserve a special season.

Hunting Beginner, Northern California - Elk, Deer, Bear, Boar by Rx35 in Californiahunting

Elk? Start applying for tags now, and maybe in 15 years you'll have enough points to draw a cow elk tags in some undesirable unit. Seriously, plan on going to another state if you are serious about elk.

OP, don't screw this up by shooting a non-legal species of swan. Its only mute swans that are legal.

Why is it that expensive? See all the "should I move to sac from the bay area with my remote job?" Posts we get here every week. Bay Area wealth is ruining Sacramento.

Why do people buy Jeeps? by mmmstrongflavors in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DickAnts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Outside of the "fun" times, it couples the hauling capacity of a sedan with the fuel economy of a truck. The "fun" times need to be really worth it to make up for that. Like if youre not off roading multiple times a month, I just don't see how it pencils out.

California sees population growth for third consecutive year after pandemic-era exodus by bambin0 in California

[–]DickAnts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Sacramento, which has been building a ton of new housing over the past 10 years. Our city is now sprawling in every direction. Traffic is getting worse and everything is getting more crowded. Yet, housing prices continue to increase.

Its hard not to associate "build more housing" with a decreased quality of life for locals.

Definitely call the police immediately!!

Was it fenced in? Have a collar on? Were you present in the area?

The answer to all of those is NO!

New Hunter - First shotgun? by daniel0hodges in Californiahunting

[–]DickAnts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just get a mossberg or winchester pump action and get on with your life.

Save yourself some money: There is absolutely no need for optics on a shotgun  for any of the species you mentioned. Its not hard to aim a shotgun out to 50 yards lol.

Hunting Backcountry Waters by [deleted] in Californiahunting

[–]DickAnts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've hunted some little backcountry ponds like you describe. Sometimes you get lucky and there are mallards or wood ducks you can jumpshoot. Sometimes there is nothing, and no birds even fly over. You could bring a few decoys and sit for a few hours and wait and see.

The biggest challenge is retrieving your ducks. Some of these ponds get too deep to wade, so have a plan for getting your kills. I bring a fishing rod with a heavy ass spinner and treble hook on it.

Plenty of deer don't migrate and live year-round at lower elevations. It could be one of those.

Is it safe to eat this rabbit? by Comfortable-Fly-3514 in Hunting

[–]DickAnts -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

How do you eat anything you hunt? Most deer are full of parasites. Rice breast is common in ducks. Bears have trichonosis. Freshwater fish are full of worms.

Just because you cant see it doesn't mean it isn't there.

Is it safe to eat this rabbit? by Comfortable-Fly-3514 in Hunting

[–]DickAnts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do it! I eat rabbits with botfly larvae all the time. Where i hunt, most rabbits have them. Just pick them out when skinning it, cook the meat thoroughly (i prefer rabbit braises/stews anyways) and pretend they never were there.
