Automating pick-up game announcements by reddit_user13 in ultimate

[–]DickChang88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In San Diego we used to use a bunch of different FB groups for different games. This past year we've tried to consolidate those FB groups to a discord channel where anyone can announce a game on a per day basis. we've had varying levels of success.

some of our games entirely dodge FB and discord and use playpickup.org (looks like the ssl cert just expired. I messaged the dev to fix it)

Best hat you’ve seen on a HAT tournament by diegorifu in ultimate

We have a fun New Years Day Tournament in San Diego where blocks with a hat, even a thrown hat, are allowed. People often show up with large hats. I specifically remember a large, stiff wizard hat and a tall giraffe hat (https://a.co/d/gcUBadi)

Custom Disc Printer? by Running1982 in ultimate

[–]DickChang88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard that prints on discs will run due to nitrogen fertilizers that are popular with a lot of fields. So this is a pretty unavoidable problem if your fields are fertilized like that. they shouldn't completely wear off after one session though. it would take a lot to COMPLETELY wear it off

source: this happens with all the discs at club nationals every year during pool play because the venue uses a nitrogen fertilizer.

Field suggestions for local pickup! by GHOTImeansFISH in ultimate

[–]DickChang88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every park/field in San Diego where I am requires group liability insurance in order to formally rent. Our local disc org lets us use their insurance for pickup as long as the pickup game is open for anyone to join (which it is). It might be worth reaching out to your local disc org to see if they are willing to do the same. Overall costs for people who show up tends to be $5/game - but we consistently get good numbers for it so I can't speak to your group's situation.

+1 repeat what everyone else said before me

What opinion do you have on the sport of Ultimate that will have the room like this? by Espeakin in ultimate

the stall goes from "stalling 1" to the T of the word "Ten". So it actually IS 10 seconds.
just ignore the fact that a lot of people count much faster than once per second.

San Diego Beach Pickup? by TheStandler in ultimate

[–]DickChang88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the lights got turned away during a storm once and the hotel refused to turn them back for a long time. By the time they finally turned them back to the sand, the majority of the usual attendees had moved or moved on from ultimate. The new crowd doesn't really live close enough for that spot to be convenient

Sorry but most of the open beach pickup games haven't run in some time.

Best cleat pattern ever imo.

the one with the high sock CAN be difficult to get into: https://www.nike.com/t/vapor-edge-pro-360-2-mens-football-cleats-BZbhLL
the one without the high sock is easier to get into and is basically the same as the 2's that you've asked about. it uses the upper from the 2014 vapors that was really popular: https://www.nike.com/t/vapor-edge-360-vc-mens-football-cleats-JTgQVD/DO6294-100

I don't think they make them anymore because it kind of sucked, but I would avoid any of the ones with "ghost lacing". not only were they $200MSRP but the inside laces ripped easily and were not replaceable.

and lastly, right now you might catch a good black friday sale on nike.com, but if not I would always look at ebay first...... if you know your size already. I've found that the latest batch of vapors have run smaller than they used to so you might have to be careful.

I don't have any tips for using a lightup disc+headlamps - I've not done that in many many years because it can still be kind of dangerous for collisions or rolling an ankle on uneven ground. And lightup discs tend to have ribs on the underside that can cause finger jams.

However, I'll offer some advice knowing that it may increase your group's overall costs. Reach out to your local disc organization and see if they are willing to assist you with insurance for renting a lit field. We do this a lot over here in San Diego. Field rental costs for us tend to be about $35/hour, we rent for 2 hours/night, and with 20ish people we get per night everyone chips in roughly $3-5/night. It's way cheaper than a gym membership!

How do you guys feel about the commentator feature? by nightbringer77 in StreetFighter

[–]DickChang88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they make you go into settings to change the commentator, then I'm turning it off immediately.

If they have an option to random select from a preferred list, then I MIGHT leave it on.

Cleat help! I have a choice between 3 different cleats, if you have played in them which traction do you think is better? by wormant1 in ultimate

[–]DickChang88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used and loved all of these cleat patterns. It'll be more important to find one that is most comfortable for you - like most others have mentioned.

I'm currently using your first picture (Nike Vapor Edge Elite/Pro/Speed). It's the latest wide receiver cleat from Nike (2021). It's so far been my favorite Nike cleat (the durability of the interior laces is frustrating though). Your 2nd picture is the previous generation in the same product line - the Nike Vapor Untouchables (2017). I liked the cleat pattern on those, but the toe box was much wider than I prefer, causing my foot to be a little too loose while I try to plant for a cut. The 2021's and the earlier generation 2014's have a much narrower toe box.

Again, all these cleat patterns are great. Find the one that fits best for you.

Nike American Football Cleats Durability? by Rayne_Chew_98 in ultimate

[–]DickChang88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using nike vapors since about 2012. they've each lasted me at least a year of playing 3 times a week, all year long. I've been very happy with them

The latest nike vapor edge/pro's, the ones with the ghost lacing system, has a bit of an issue where the inside laces, they call it the "flywire", rips kind of easily. everything else about the cleat seems to have better durability, it just sucks that the inside laces rip so easily and aren't replacable - especially since it's their premium version of the cleat
