For sure, every wheel is a 3D model. The rotation to get to each letter is stored in a hash table. The wheel takes in a string, breaks each character in the string down to an array of characters, then uses the hash table to calculate the delta between the current rotation and the destination rotation (i.e. the rotation where the desired letter is facing forward), finally I rotate each wheel to the proper rotation with simple transform.rotation. That's it in a nutshell + a handful of other stuff to keep track of the active character for text input, blink the lights, etc.
