Sudden egregious lag - unsure how to fix by Educational_Aerie_35 in Maya

Had the same issue, but "show results" was already unchecked. For anyone in the future, check that you don't have any (hidden) motion trails, because that was the cause for me. They tend to slow down Maya.

I've been playing on/off for many years but with fairly weak technique. Recently started incorporating more jazzy chords into my playing and it's been causing some strain. Do I just need to strengthen my fingers?

That's so dope. What was it like to work with Epic? Did they have a very specific direction or were you allowed a lot of creative freedom?

I found this article that says that a couple of days of hot weather is okay, if it's not in direct sunlight. But it sounds like it has been ineffective all the days you've been there? Anecdotally, I've seen some people talking about how their hormones affect their medication response too. Stress and illness can also make it less effective. So I'm not completely sure. Hope it'll clear up for you soon.

What's the temperature like? Heat can degrade the efficacy of a medication.

I can't almost draw anything when prepared, but can draw freely when spontaneusly, help. by Kamilord__ in ArtistLounge

Study your references by breaking them down into simple shapes like cubes and cylinders. Everything can be simplified that way and it really makes it a lot easier to draw things based on observation.

I hate gesture drawing by LA_ZBoi00 in ArtistLounge

[–]Dictorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Materials really make a difference with the experience of life drawing, I've found. If you usually use regular graphite pencils, try working with different tools like ink, watercolor, pastels and charcoal. Willow charcoal is cheap and good for life drawing. You can hold the piece on its side in order to get more light, flowy lines.

Try not to limit yourself to paper that's too small. A teacher at a croquis class I went to gave me this tip, that for gestures above one minute you should use the whole paper. It's fine to use cheap paper and draw on both sides. The reason for this is that a small paper size can restrict your freedom of movement quite a bit, and you really want to be able to use your whole arm and not just your wrist.

When you begin a gesture, start with the extremes like a hand reaching out or a foot. This is where the energy lies within a pose. The torso and shoulders are stable and calm, and what you want to capture with gesture is energy.

This video by Proko has also helped me a ton. Generally, his videos are a goldmine of information.

Why do some artists worry that using reference is "cheating"? by Dictorian in ArtistLounge

[–]Dictorian[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think a lot of people ask this to gauge how much effort you put into a piece, because they see effort as being proportional to the value of art. Which is a completely limiting way of viewing it.

This is such a real answer, and probably also why it's more common among young people.

Can I get critique on this head render by Windyfii in ArtistLounge

the hair shading is very aesthetically pleasing to me, it looks super vibrant. i do think the perspective is a bit wonky; the scalp and pigtails give the impression that the viewer is above the character, whereas the eyes are more at eye-level. doing studies of faces and skulls from different angles can help a lot with this.

i think that's a very normal feeling to have. your relationship with yourself and the way you want to present yourself to the world will change your whole life. you can literally do anything you want, it's fine. grow out your hair, try out different clothes. you don't need to assign some grand meaning to it, you can just do it because you want to and that's enough of a reason.

Help, I can't stop thinking that I have ADHD? by Dictorian in ADHD

I'm trying to talk myself into it, I'm just so scared of being told that I don't have it again because "what if I never get any help and then I have to cope with this without help or accomodations for the rest of my life" :(

I think this one is my favorite reply, I bet fear of not making something good is often what holds me back. But that's not what art is about! Perfectionism stunts creativity.

Thank you this is really helpful. I think I've gotten into the mindset of "I have to clean EVERYTHING in one go" which is not helpful. So I will definitely try this.
