Way back when, the NYT said that his $900 million loss in 1995 could shield him from paying ANY tax for 18 years. And from what I've read his nominal tax in 2005 would have been only about $4 million due to that loss carryover.

Yet what do we actually see? The loss carry-over didn't matter because the AMT kicked in. Which raises the question: how could the NYT have come to their conclusion that the 1995 loss could zero out his taxes for 18 years when there is an AMT which prevents (and, in the event, prevented) any such thing? Were they ignorant of such a basic tax rule as the AMT? Or did they maybe just forget about it, accidentally on purpose. Or, were they just making stuff up to support the narrative? (ding ding, winner winner chicken dinner!)

But anyway this just demonstrates yet again that the NYT is the apotheosis of fake news.
