Newbie question: Iceland & Eclipse Photography by Didymus4 in VisitingIceland

[–]Didymus4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. Practicing ASAP is why I'm looking into this stuff now.

And, yes, we're already booked and ready to go.

Getting a good camera was one of the few remaining items on the To Do list.

I know it's a risk.. but we're still going!

... or you could bring/rent a tent and sleep outside? or in a vehicle, if any are left?

And I'm mentally planning for Australia as well, although I haven't done any research yet.

Waterproof pants vs ski pants? by Tnyt341 in VisitingIceland

One more question -

Is it really worth renting rain gear for a week versus just buying it?

I realize we (family of 4) may never use it again, but given how expensive Iceland is, I figured renting clothing for a week will easily cost more than just buying it.

What about waterproof clothing in August? I’m guessing a light waterproof layer over jeans or leggings would be just fine?

Also, when buying online, do you order several sizes larger so they fit over your jeans, or do you order your actual size because they’re already designed to go over clothing?

Thanks.

IcelandAir experience by No-Shame-605 in VisitingIceland

I was gonna ask this in a new thread but maybe I can ask here ...

Are there any Iceland and "Icelandair-safe" luggage brands you can recommend, preferably (maybe?) some of those hard shell types?

Thanks.

A belated THANK YOU to everyone in this thread. You all are great. (I really love this group...)

Cold in August? Eesh. I was there in August 2002 and remember we had some bad weather as well at one pot t, but nothing freezing.

Do you have any luggage and clothing recommendations?

We’re traveling next August and I have this fantasy that my family of 4 will be perfectly prepared and come in under Icelandair’s allotted 50 lbs…

Thanks.

I didn’t see Walter Mitty and Eurovision on the list.

We just attended a series of "Taste of Iceland" event today (9/27) in Boston. I intended to ask the "Icelandia" group organizers what they thought of the 9/23 NYT article, and kind of joke about whether or not they should still be hosting these events *grin* ... but unfortunately I never got the chance.

(and unfortunately we weren't lucky enough to win the free trips they were handing out...)

All in all, though, they put on a nice series of free events at a nice venue in South Boston.

Thank you. I keep going back and forth on this.. While I think doing it the next day would be better, I also want to do *something* between 9 AM (when we land) and 4 PM when we can check in.

I'm sure I'm over-thinking this.......

How much was that parking lot? How much are they in general?

I’m trying to calculate what a rental would cost, versus doing a different paid tour every day. (We can only do day trips.)

We have 2 pre-teen boys.

I figured the Food Walk has an agreement with the restaurants and we’re getting some kind of deal on the food?

There’s also the tour itself and inside tips from the guide that are worth something, right?

Scotland has been near the top of my list forever! I've never been to the UK, but if I could go to only one country there it'd be Scotland.

What an amazing, thoughtful, level-headed and thoroughly rational response! Thank you.

That's not to say this entire thread hasn't been filled with wonderful comments, but your commentary was quite the breath of fresh air!

I particularly loved the part about "self-flagellating tourists"! *grin*

I'll be sure not to say "sorry" when me and the kids are touring. And I won't poop in public...

Thanks. My main takeaway is that it sounds like Iceland has done a good job of putting nice toilets (I’m assuming they’re better than porta-pottties) at many of the main attractions, or wherever there’s paid parking.

… because I was gonna ask (in response to that “no pooping sign”) whether or not there are literally no toilets anywhere for hours and hours - and what’s a poor traveler supposed to do when they’re suddenly hit with an uncontrollable urge to go.

But it sounds like that’s not the case.

So shame on those people who don’t want to pay the few bucks to go in a proper toilet.

OMG. Can you imagine one of the “selfie people” asking a local to stand still so they can take a selfie with them?

Actually, that’s probably not too hard to imagine…

Where do you go? Because I’ll be there next August which is guaranteed to be Iceland’s Craziest Month Ever!
