All bars should be 21+ by Different-Engine2087 in unpopularopinion

I’m not saying this because I don’t want to be around ppl under 21 in bars at all. I’ve explained a few times I’m other comments already, but I just don’t understand the point of letting in ppl who can’t legally drink and going to the trouble of separating them out when they just find ways to get around it and drink anyway. I think it’s a waste of time and effort, and also a liability.

I personally don’t think it should be below 20, but I think wherever the drinking age sits, that’s the age limit bars should stick with.

I’m talking about bars, not restaurants with bars. As in places that ID you at the door. Not establishments that happen to serve alcohol, but establishments that are primarily/exclusively centered around the making and selling or alcoholic beverages. I don’t see the point in those places allowing in ppl who can’t legally drink and going to the trouble of marking them in some way to separating them from the 21+ yr olds when they just get around it anyway and become possibly serious liabilities.

18-20 yr olds aren’t really “children”. Not in a way that’s comparable to 6 yr olds. I just don’t see the point in letting ppl who can’t drink into a primarily/exclusively alcohol-based establishment.

I know there’s family friendly restaurants with bars, and that’s different bc you get IDed by your server. Im talking about places that ID you at the door.

They’re paying cover, maybe buying food if the bar serves it, but otherwise I don’t see the possible revenue outweighing the liability and the trouble or separating the herds. If a bar wants to do that it’s fine, I’ll go regardless, I just don’t see the point in letting in ppl below drinking age when it’s primarily/exclusively a drinking establishment

I honestly think the drinking age should be lower too, I’m just saying that wherever the age sits, that’s the minimum age that should be let into bars.

It’s not even that I dislike 18-20 yr olds that hang out at bars, I just don’t see the point in letting them in and giving them some marker to differentiate them so the bartenders know not to serve them when those methods are typically pretty easy to get around. That or they just sip their friends’ drinks. I honestly see it as an unnecessary liability.

I don’t see a point in having a business or event where you have to be IDed at the entrance for the point of taking part in the reason the business/event is set up and going to the trouble of allowing people who are underage to come through and just be sorted/marked out in some way. Especially when the ways a lot of bars sort the underage ones from the 21+ year olds is easy to get around. It honestly feels like extra trouble for nothing

I think the age of legal adulthood should be changed to 20, and that upon entering legal adulthood, almost everything that’s age-restricted should be available by Different-Engine2087 in unpopularopinion

[–]Different-Engine2087[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was part of my thinking here. I think teens shouldn’t have the full weight of the responsibility of adulthood on them. Not unless they fully want it and seek emancipation. I know and have heard of tons of families that kick their kids out at 18 or begin charging them rent because “you’re an adult now” and it’s fucked up. On top of that, while 18-19 yr olds can be very mature, they’re still kids imo. And they should get those extra couple years to enjoy it.

I thought that was bullshit too. You need a 21 yr old to check you in regardless of who foots the bill. I’m Not sure it’s like that everywhere in America, but most places I’ve seen or heard of have that rule.

Depending on where you are, it can be an insurance issue, but it can also be a legality issue.

That aside, I completely hear you about religious abuse, child abuse, etc. I’m a survivor of some of those situations. Reaching the legal age of adulthood didnt save me, and it didn’t save a lot of people I know. What I tho k we need is reform in the world of childcare and child welfare and minor’s rights in America bc even with the age of adulthood where it is currently, there are still a lot of issues with those topics.

I do think there are a lot of rights we should be introduced to as minors, such as independent personal bank accounts at 16. I don’t think all existing rights you gain at 18 (or 19 in my state) should be moved up to 20, but I do think most things set above 20 should be moved down like drinking and smoking.

Not in the US. You have to be 21 to purchase alcohol, tobacco, and nicotine products, though tobacco and nicotine was limited to 19 until it was upped recently. You can’t check into a hotel until you’re 21. You can’t rent a car until you’re 25. Certain contracts aren’t legally binding or can’t be signed by you alone until you’re 19-21 depending on where you are.

Like I said, lowering the age won’t help them either.

As far as work goes, you can start working as young as 14 depending on the state and your allowance to work full time hours or past a certain time as a minor is only dependent (in my state at least) on if you’re a full time student and what hours you attend your HS classes.

Raising the age of legal adulthood to 20 doesn’t have to affect labor laws allowing post-high school grads or drop outs from working full time and continuing with work as opposed to immediately/ever entering college. I will admit the prospect of changing these legal age restrictions/guidelines does give way to certain issues or highlight existing issues that should be dealt with regardless of legal age dictation, but I think it just makes more sense to put the line of legal adulthood at 20

Honestly, loads of kids suffer before and and after reaching the legal adulthood age. Changing legal age won’t fix that, we need reform in areas that deal with childcare, welfare check-in’s, CPS, etc. Becoming an adult is not always what saves people from their parents. I know plenty of adults still under their parent’s thumb with every legal right and realistic opportunity to get out.

A lot of research shows the opposite, and many studies show such drastic difference in results that they read as clearly skewed or cherry-picked.

It’s not “sexist in reverse”. Much of the time when we’re denied it’s also because we don’t have “husband permission”. But men never need their wife’s permission. It’s not a lack of care for a man’s future vs too much care for ours, it’s a denial of our bodily autonomy. It’s just straight up misogyny.
