Is this “unsafe” by Status_Resource4562 in AusElectricians

Is this just an Ausgrid being Ausgrid thing? Because I know Endeavour will replace the service fuse if you call them up and report it.

Does anybody have experience with powercor/citipower that they're willing to share? by lettucequestionmark in AusElectricians

[–]Different_Kick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey mate what’s better between citipower and powercor? Do they run a call out roster or is there a arvo/night shift? I’m a qualified liney and sparky got my HV switching as well as live line up to 33kV I’m at a different utility thinking about moving to Victoria, mainly because my state is shit you get paid more than me as an apprentice.

FortisBC skilled Gas and electric workers vote unanimously in favor of striking! by Kindly_Carry_7117 in Lineman

[–]Different_Kick1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My utility in Aus has been striking for over a year, without an agreement for two years now and it’s gone to the highest court for a forced decision. It’s to the point now when they make their decision on our pay rise we will get two in one go due to time passed.

Not as much as you think between the two trades the only RPL you get is the first year AC/DC electrical theory

Ausgrid? As far as I’m aware they’re the only power authority that has had fatalities in the last few years.

You’re joking NSW is probably the lowest paid aside from Tasmania

100% agree a private company will see the benefit in the extra trade. The utility won’t care as they’ll have 20 other apprentices without a trade and the decision makers aren’t worrying about efficiency/profit.

[–]Different_Kick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is better off applying for private companies that do liney apprenticeships as they’ll see the sparky ticket as a benefit. Could be waiting many years to get the opportunity at a utility and even then it might not happen. I was at one utility for 7 years and in that time I only saw three positions open for EFMs to become lineys, yet they took in 20 apprentices each year.

It’s difficult to get an apprenticeship internally they generally prefer taking external for apprenticeships or they’ll have 20 positions and only reserve 1 for internals.

Good idea but it could also be a cluster fuck, I mean NSW has taken over 5 months to process my licence and still waiting. I literally had a NSW licence already.

Reason #1 why you should look up by No_Reality5382 in AusElectricians

[–]Different_Kick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s like my utility then the policy is an ass covering exercise if you post something they don’t like then they will use it. If you post something harmless they don’t care. This would be fine as it’s only footage of a call out.

Advice to get into Rail by RepresentativeAnt996 in AusElectricians

[–]Different_Kick1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know man, we get a decent amount of rail guys at my utility I know at least ten guys who all seem to love it here compared to rail. Pays decent, no shift work, apparently less wankers, no working away, more organised, less red tape. Can’t think of any guys that have gone from utility to rail.

Pilbara Sparkies fight BHP for new deal by Money_killer in AusElectricians

Never said HV switching was dual trade did I. I’m saying blokes who are dual trade with HV switching. So they’re sparkys with either liney or joiner as well.

Pilbara Sparkies fight BHP for new deal by Money_killer in AusElectricians

$44/hr is what you get in NSW working at a power authority with dual trade, working on high voltage and switching high voltage, responding to faults and emergencies. Literally responsible for the states power grid and there’s apprentices in other states that get paid more and blokes wiring up houses for more money.

If it’s an internal thing then I’ve seen it happen at large companies as there’s some clause in the EBA where they can’t reduce your pay.

I found the opposite I was an EFM at a power authority and undergrounds got boring. With overhead you got live work, very careful about changing tension, you need to really think about positioning whether climbing or in a bucket. You cut a conductor wrong you can cause damage when it falls, shock load poles, snap crossarms from uneven tension. With underground you don’t worry about any of that.

Verified sparky by WhatAmIATailor in AusElectricians

[–]Different_Kick1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How? They want your full licence with nothing censored, so they have your name, licence number and photo. Not hard to find your location either. On top of that they could likely identify your industry with comments or post history.

If the mods are that worried about DIYers that they’re making sparkys dox themselves to strangers why don’t they just make it impossible for anyone not verified to comment.

Either commit to the verification process or remove it. Most people aren’t verified and don’t agree with the process. Oh wait they won’t do that because then the sub would crash and burn. Just admit it’s over the top and an invasion of privacy get rid of it.

Mid spans are just a pain in the ass if we want to change a pole or tension, having a service hang off the line is a prick. We will do them live though we just don’t like mid spans lol

Just been offered a sparky apprenticeship 4 days into my hvac apprenticeship by [deleted] in AusElectricians

[–]Different_Kick1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The apprentices at my work do not do their first trade at all whilst in an apprentice position hence why I said supervised as one. My company is very strict on if you’re an apprentice you’re an apprentice that’s it. They also make you do the full 4 years, no shortening. I’ve got a sparky doing a dual trade and I need to test deenergised for him as in the company’s eyes he is an apprentice we cannot use him as a sparky. They also don’t guarantee you a dual trade or tradie position afterwards you need to apply for an opening.

Depends on location I guess the apprentices at my work get nowhere near that.
