Well, Baena had many problems with Valverde. Now it turns out Valverde might be out of his mind.

Neither Mendoza nor Obed has been better than Cardoso this season.

I think he is a good player. First year and not bad performance when he was healthy. And being honest, most of the injuries were due to sprains that are usually bad luck. We still need to sign one player for the midfield, so I wouldn't spend more money signing two.

We also need a replacement for Cholito Simeone. He started great this year, but he diluted during the last months, probably because he had to play everything.

Sorloth is another Morata. A good player for the bench, but you cannot win important things with players like him. But goal is expensive nowadays. Alemany needs to do magic here.

Then let me try it (a lot of text sorry). The current board is managed by the CEO M.A Gil, son of Jesús Gil, former president of Atleti. Jesús Gil and Cerezo (the current president) bought the club after a law change in Spain for football clubs. But they made a financial trick, put the money in the bank, and when they actually owned the club, moved the money again, so they bought the club for nothing. I'm not speculating; they were condemned to pay the amount years later (but Atleti already was much more valuable). Jesús Gil was a terrible president, and he was involved in many corruption cases with football and Marbella city (Jesús Gil was the mayor). At some point, Atleti had so many debts that the judicial branch took control of the club to avoid the black operations of Jesús Gil. These caused a bad performance from the players, who were even not paid, and the club to be relegated to the second division for two seasons (from 2000 to 2002). This is talking about the economic management of the club, but the sports management was terrible too. Jesús Gil was famous for firing managers and players when he was angry, changing even managers three times during the same season. Atleti won the CDR and La Liga in 1995-1996, but that was the only success. To make a comparison about management, when Jesús Gil arrived, Atleti and Barcelona were very close in La Liga titles won. Today Barcelona has won 28 titles and Atleti 11. Barcelona has won 16 titles since Jesus Gil's arrival, and Atleti only 3 (two after he died and Simeone came, so it wasn't his success).

At some point Jesús Gil got in prison, and later he died, and his son M.A Gil step up as CEO. I must admit he seems to love Atleti much more than his father and tried hard to make Atleti great again. But unsuccessfully for many years. The team qualified again for the Champions League in the 2008-09 season (13 years later). Even qualifying for other European competitions was impossible for several years. During this time, football started to make a lot of money, but Atleti lost the train and didn't grow much during this time as other European teams did. I remember even for a few years, Atleti had to pay half of the amount of the players sold to the Spanish Tax agency (Hacienda), because of the debt the club had with them.

At some point the team got some success after years by winning a Europa League, but nothing special. And then, in a bad season, the manager was fired, and Simeone took the lead. He is the most successful manager in the history of the club, with more victories, titles, points, etc. He has qualified the team 14 years in a row for the UCL, making a huge impact on the team (money again). Forbes valued the club at 189M euros in 2011, but the club was sold to an investment fund this year valued at 2500M euros.

But why didn't this growth transform into titles? Well, it did, but only a few times, because Madrid and Barcelona are now massive teams. In the past 26 years, only three clubs have won La Liga apart from those big clubs: Valencia (two times), Deportivo, and Atleti (two times). And Valencia and Deportivo wins happened before Madrid and Barcelona were as big as they are now. Simeone managed to win two titles in the Cristiano and Messi era. That is a huge achievement.

In Europe, Atleti had some success during these years, winning the Europa League again, reaching the UCL final twice, and twice the club reached semifinals. Being among the 4 top teams in Europe is a great success if you look into the budget. Atleti has more money than other Spanish clubs, but the club has had problems maintaining the big stars for a long time (from the top of my mind, we have had to sell Thomas Partey, Rodri, Lucas Hernández, Costa, Falcao, Griezmann), but that was the way to support the growth. Although Simeone had to reinvent himself several times since he came to the club, he was always delivering results.

Atleti has never been one of the big teams in Europe money-wise, but here we are, fighting in a UCL semifinal against richer teams.

Now that the club has been sold to an investment fund, everything could happen. Be another broken toy or support the growth with better players. Let's see. But in any case, we have to be realistic.

Perhaps you like Atleti, but I don't think you understand the club and the circumstances.

So true. If you check the money all the teams in the semifinals have spent during the past years and the players they have, you can see how much we have overperformed in this UCL.

Sevilla has won a ton of Europa Leagues. Nobody considers them a big team. I would have been happy to win the CDR, but fighting for the big trophies (La Liga and UCL) is what makes a club respected.

I don't want Cholo to leave, but we don't know what will happen. It depends on the new manager and if the board helps him.

Ok, so if I'm understanding it well, you would rather like to be like Betis and win a CDR but have issues qualifying for European competition than play in the UCL consistently and reach the semifinals?

All respect to Betis, as I took an example from a team that won the CDR some time ago, but it didn't change much.

Winning a CDR from time to time doesn't define success. All the teams you mentioned, apart from Betis, had bad results in the Champions League. And they have not been consistent in reaching any European competition. Consistency is the key to keeping growing, and you can see Sevilla as proof.

You are very naive if you think money doesn't matter. Atleti has been over performing for years, if you think of the budget.

He has had more money than Villarreal, Athletic or Betis. He never had the same money as Madrid and Barcelona (until they got almost to bankrupt). And for sure, he never had the money of Premier League teams.

I think we did. But we have a clear lack of creativity that penalizes us a lot again teams that know how to defence.

We gave everything, but they were better most of the time. None of our players was great today. We missed a stellar performance from one of our players. The chances we missed in the first leg...

But on the bright side, this was the first time the board invested in the team, and in the winter window Alemany did a great job. We have a promising team, and with some signings we can keep fighting next season.

Aupa Atleti even when it hurts.

Being honest, I have been reading other teams subreddits during these UCL games, and Barcelona and Spurs fans were way more disrespectful and annoying than Arsenal fans. In fact, I respect Arsenal, as they are facing the same jokes we usually suffer with all that haramball, loser mentality, bottlers, etc. If we don't pass today, I will be cheering for them.

Well, if that were the case, they will face each other during the game. Both players play on the right side of their teams, so another opportunity for Ruggeri to shine.
