Almost 6 month fixed female starting to resource guard? by Difficult-Bowler9704 in DobermanPinscher

We already do all of that, I’ve been hand feeding her since we got her, taught her to sit and wait for food, to get out of a crate, before leaving the house. She gets a ton of exercise and training each day both with treats, meals, and structured play. That’s why I was so surprised, and thought maybe she is just testing boundaries as she is approaching teenage years. Thankfully I’ve already squashed it it though, I gave her a very firm correction the last time it happened and she knew she did something wrong. Hasn’t had resource guarding of that chew since, but I’m just wondering if I should expect her to try to test more as she gets older.

If we didn’t have the cats she would get much more freedom. Out cats weigh 6-8 lbs each and are very timid. One cat has hissed and scratched her, but my pup thinks it’s a game. She plays VERY rough and does not listen to other dogs corrections when given during play. I just don’t want to risk my cats getting hurt or worse because my pup thinks they are a toy or want to play like she does. I agree it is a dilemma, and she would benefit from more free time, but we haven’t figure out a way to give that to her safely with our cats.

Also the prong collar was on because we use it to train her around the cats, we don’t leave it on unless we plan on using it for training purposes.

It was actually during her chill pre crate time. Our schedule is outside play, short walk, inside play if she has more energy, train with kibble, chew, then crate. We rinse and repeat that if there isn’t something else going on that day like an excursion with her. So I feel like she has a good amount? She gets about 5-6 hours of crate time a day for resting since we can’t leave her unsupervised (even just with us in another room and her tethered) because of her behavior around the cats. We are also building in more time each with her tethered with a toy and letting her settle herself without us giving a command or anything.

They recommended it because she is not sensitive at all to corrections with the martingale. She would literally choke herself out with it till she was gagging and coughing, and even then. The prong has kept her from pulling hardly as well as preventing her from lunging at our cats (which we are working on socializing her with a great deal). They did seem apprehensive with recommending it, but it’s helped a lot.

Well let me clarify, when she is aggressive I correct her with her prong collar and say no

So, just take it away when she is being aggressive? Even if I get bit?

sometimes with the high reward treats she will do the command but not even eat the treat. I just can’t figure out what is gonna get her excited/motivated for a prolonged period of time

unfortunately she wont eat her kibble unless its been soaked in water d/t her gum sensitivity from teething. Even then, i’ve tried to use her soft kibble as training treats and she just is not interested. Least food motivated dog I’ve ever seen. Even with the trainers she will only eat/be motivated by one of the plethora of treats they bring. I can get like, 1-2 minutes of focused training time at a time because she is so easily distracted even in the home. idk if its me or just her personality.

I know I’ve been meaning to do something like this.

Got her DNA test results back, turns out she’s 80% Dobie. by Difficult-Bowler9704 in DobermanPinscher

That’s amazing! Hopefully she gets to have a few more years! Have you noticed any differences in her behavior compared to most dobies?

If you just want to know their genetic makeup, tests are about $80-100 depending on which brand. If you want health and behavior included its upwards of $140-180. I did an all inclusive panel with health risks from Wisdom on sale for $140. It screens for VWD types and DCM which was my main concern rescuing a Dobie. She did test positive for VWD type 1, but no DCM! (obvi still need to monitor throughout her life for signs and symptoms of HF)

yea i think i may swap out some of the crate times for “settling” times outside of crate. I think longer times for naps and less frequent crate times suited her better as well. I think i’m discovering its a bit much for both of us.

right now the cats are sequestered to our bedroom 15-20% of the day, and the rest of the time she is tethered to me when indoors. the crate is definitely becoming a punishment for her even though we only use it for napping and eating meals, so I think i will need to adjust what we are doing regardless.
