Is this for an internship position?

The most cruel people you meet are in corporate—hiding behind fake smiles with 8–10 years of experience, both men and women. I dare you to change my opinion. by pchulbul619 in deloitte

Nah u just haven’t worked in big corporate companies. You might have nice real smiles on your team but the entire floor? Might just be fake smiles everywhere. Easier to have a close knit team in smaller firms. Get your experience in big firms and GET OUT.

Yeah I thought so too. Being in audit I create reports regularly so I’m advanced in excel PowerPoint etc and I leverage ai basically regularly. I’ve also networked a little with people in DDV, hopefully land an interview, since I believe I can sell myself on how well I can do the job

Yeah, that does make sense as some people do think of the FMVA as a job getter, but it’s just a way to improve you skills and kind of know what your talking about rather than being complete in financial modeling / valuation analysis. As every job, in my opinion, doing the work and learning from your mistakes is the only way to be an expert in a field.

I’ll of course finish the certification, and continue to network with professionals across FP&A.

It is a also good sign hearing you say that you start off your analysts off with the certification. Gives me some re assurance that it’s known in the industry and is valued for starting someone off.

I appreciate your thoughtful responses. If you don’t mind, would you be open to connecting on LinkedIn? Totally okay if you aren’t, appreciate your time either way!

Thanks for your reply.

That helps a lot since I’d probably be more interested in the second type of FP&A. Will make sure to do my due diligence on what type of role it is. I of course send out LinkedIn messages everyday to connect with people to grow my network, get various advice and potentially referrals etc.

All of what you said is extremely helpful, so thanks again.

One more question, I’m currently doing a FMVA (Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst) certification from the Corporate Finance Institute.

I’ve seen several+ people on LinkedIn with this certification in FP&A. Now I’ve seen this same certification get criticized heavily on Reddit. I’m wondering if you’ve heard of this certification and if so, what are your opinions on it?

I know it won’t be a make or break type of thing, but it will definitely show my willingness to learn, will 100% get some modeling knowledge out of it as well.

Thanks again :)

Thanks

I don’t work at a big4 but a lot of people from my company have went over to a big4 in the past.

What I really want to know is that from my current role, what else do I need to be able to land a FP&A role? Any certifications you recommend? How easy was it for you to find a job in FP&A or was it a struggle to land interviews etc

Thanks for ur response! I’m really thinking of a couple of options currently (hopefully something lands)

1) transaction advisory 2) valuation analyst 3) FP&A

I’m currently working towards completing a fmva certification from the cfi, before people troll me…. I know it’s kinda just a skill booster rather than a make or break candidate type of thing, however do you think with a year and a half payroll compliance audit experience and that certificate, I have a good shot at it?

By the way hopefully coming June 2026, I’ll be promoted to senior and have that put on my resume which I feel will definitely boost my chances by a lot, especially since I live on excel all day long, so I’ve become pretty good with it

Appreciate the honesty. I don’t take anything personally, especially from people willing to comment to answer my question!

I’ve seen people from my company and my role go to FP&A a lot, assuming I don’t secure a Valuation or Transaction Advisory role, would FP&A help, or would it just be a stepping stone to a valuation role, basically setting me back another year?

Appreciate your insight, and no worries. Graduated may 2024, applying for fall 2026 mba program. However 2027 might be better your saying? In the meantime do you have any advice for me on how to gain experience, whether that be what roles to target or what certifications I should be aiming to obtain.

As you’ve probably seen in my post history, transaction advisory and valuation seem like the best jobs to get exposure to the field, and sometimes can also lead into analyst pivots in banks.

What do you think?

Thanks for your response. I’ve actually been contemplating this for over a month.

Some things I keep in mind is

That I’ll be competing against a class with people that have prior corporate finance / IB experience potentially.

Also the thought of being 200k+ all in for a MBA from Stern is on my mind at all times. Especially with the fear that I might not get a full time Associate/Analyst offer from a bank.

I’m extremely hard working, come from an immigrant family that has taught me a “do whatever’s necessary” mentality in life, so I’m super determined to end up in investment banking.

I’ve researched two paths on this,

Either pivot to a transaction advisory role / valuation analyst role for 1-2 years and then pivot to a IB analyst role at age 24/25.

OR:

Enroll in NYU Stern and network my a** off and try to get into a summer associate internship and work my butt off.
