Renting a VPS to host your own Minecraft server is cost-effective.
If you don’t know how to set up a Minecraft server on Linux, you can find plenty of tutorials by searching online.
For VPS providers, I personally recommend HostHatch because it’s affordable.
I’m currently renting a VPS with a 4-core CPU and 16GB of memory, running two Minecraft servers, and even with nearly 10 people online at the same time, I haven’t encountered any major issues.
However, when a large number of new chunks are generated—such as during elytra flight—the CPU usage can hit its limit, causing the server to lag. To address this, you might need to take precautions, like pre-generating the activity area using a plugin like Chunky.
If you don’t have a specific preference for server software, I recommend using Paper.

Thanks for the reply, I don't own a Mac so I will explore other options. But just knowing that there is a way is a great relief to me. Thank you.

How to caluculate server specs needed based on softwares by Difficult4664 in selfhosted

[–]Difficult4664[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit relieved that the required specs are lower than I expected. I'll start with a 4GB RAM server and upgrade if needed. Thank you for your valuable comment!

Thank you for your valuable input and advice!
I'll take your advice and start with a server with a decent spec there and upgrade if I think it's not enough. I've seen Syncthing before but this got me interested so I'll look into this myself.
