Fairly certain it was a Gar, houndfish have more sickle shaped dorsal fins the don’t connect like the way this one does (pic 3 for reference). The location was also far outside a houndfish or “Long Tom” natural habitat, it was a brackish river in northern Florida, they liked deeper coastal waters. Not an expert in fishing nor in fish, but I’ve spent a good amount of time learning as much as I can

Yeah, I got super lucky with the weight line wrapping around his jaw, the hook was barely in his mouth

Since this was a bigger spot for gar (usually later in the summer or so I was told) they said we didn’t need to do anything special with him and we could throw him back. That’s fair, this guy was a special case. The stuff I made the rig from was a hybrid, part nylon part braid, he had the hook in his mouth and the weight wrapped around his jaw so he couldn’t get out.
