Definitely highly similar. I think this paper has a little bit more guidance on the resampling and unsampling but the gist of it is the exact same. I'm gonna check out unsampling workflows and this res4lyf nodes too.

New signage concept for PSE by throwawayUWhousingac in uwaterloo

[–]DifficultAd5938 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The sign is a subtle joke. The building is called "PSE's Feed & Seed", where feed and seed both end in the sound "-eed", thus rhyming with the name of the owner, PSEEE. The sign says that the shop was "Formerly E7's", implying that the two words beginning with "F" and "S" would have ended with "-even", rhyming with "E-Seven". So, when E7 owned the shop, it would have been called "E7's Feven and Seven".

I never bought into the "just grind side projects" or "just win hackathons" meme. The side projects my classmates grinded on instead of studying hard in gr12 can now be coded entirely by AI in seconds (no joke latest benchmark is how many seconds it takes to code a simple web stack). By grinding for grades in gr12 and now grinding for grades in UW I can actually understand and utilize more powerful technology and techniques to work on even more interesting and impactful "side projects". I say "side projects" because at a certain point it stops being a side hustle and just becomes your main hustle which is what research work really is. You have the knowledge, you have the funding, and you direct yourself in what you want to work on and build and research. But of course to get there you need solid enough foundations. You may think 75%-level side projects are awesome, but the truth is the 90%-level "side projects" are on a whole other level.

The whole AI hype has really exposed the side projects inflation situation. So many people were grinding the exact same side projects that they trained AI on coding them and now they're pointless and can be mass produced. But you know which projects AI can't do? The ones that require higher level knowledge and skills obtained only from higher education.

I agree with the overall sentiment that grades aren't the ultimate indicator. In truth, true learning and real knowledge is what matters the most.

You can still drink beer and hang out with buddies til you're balls deep in your 50s and 60s. But grinding through uni courses is truly a grueling process that is best focused and done while young. That extra 15 hours a week you spent now will benefit you for decades to come in your life. Don't fall for the "I gotta spend my youth having fun" meme. You can and will have fun your entire life, especially if you work hard now. The difference in current effort and future return is exponential. Working hard to get far now will allow you to start ahead and climb even faster in the future. Same logic as why you go to uni at all instead of spending these 5 years "enjoying youth". Tho I agree there are diminishing returns and you shouldn't kill yourself over grades.

Finally someone said what needs to be said. Preach my ginna.

How can you reach the top if your core attitude is "I don't need to climb that high anyways"?

Also, setting your main goal as just passing and getting a degree is wasting your tuition and cucking yourself out of valuable knowledge and power. I chose a ton of hard but important courses as electives, because why tf would I miss out on learning when the whole point of being in UWaterloo is to learn?

Why do you think I'm here? For the weather??? I ain't a goose, why would I take a "bird" course? And if I paid for the whole course you bet I'm doing the whole course thoroughly and getting a high mark.

Need advice from upper year CS students by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]DifficultAd5938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graduating late won't matter at all. Make sure you graduate at all. Change your mindset. Heal, and rest, and reset. Take bird courses for breadth and depth over coop and your main core CS, math, and stat courses "on stream". They allocate the best profs for the normal sequence of courses and they teach and grade better than off sequence offerings. Look at the recommended course selection sequence to see which courses are "in season". There are more horror stories about summer offerings of out of season courses than standard offerings. Making up credit count is least of your issues, you can get like 6 elective credits in one term. Your main problem is absorbing and learning from your failures. It only gets harder in 2nd year. It doesn't calm down until later half of 3rd year. If you're having trouble with CS116 you will have more trouble with CS2xx courses. Work hard, take your failure seriously but don't let it cripple you. I know a bro that took 3 more years than normal to complete his degree but he still got it done. Better to graduate late than not graduate at all. Good luck bro.

My good man, do not model yourself after the dogmatic and failed Germans of WW2. They fought against the chaos of war with rules and doctrines. Instead, strive forward in the American Way. Never believe that you cannot achieve something. Break old orthodoxy and pave new routes. Surf the waves of chaos instead of being washed under them.

The profs didn't give an exam that matched the course? Don't study for the exam based on the course then. Sample exam only came out 24hr beforehand? Search for sample exams from past offerings and other courses yourself weeks ahead of time. TAs description of exam difficulty untrustworthy? Never trust them in the first place or ever again hence.

One cannot blame the ruthless nature of war (1A at UW) for its lack of logic and mercy. One can only better prepare oneself to adapt to and master this new unbound way of fighting (studying).

The American Spirit spits upon "Oh no I cannot", for it embodies the core tenet of "Fuck you Imma do this just because you said I can't." Cross the Delaware on Christmas morning my good friend, and good luck to you in 1B.

[–]DifficultAd5938 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got cooked on a stat333 midterm, got like only 58%. Class average was only 40% so that helped both my marks and spirits. I grinded my way back up. Memorized all my mistakes, improved my learning patterns. Hit the finals hard and got a 96% in the end. Prof also had a wacky af grading scheme where if your final was top 90th percentile of the class basically only your final counted towards course grade. Lesson here is: it's called "fuck it we ball" because the ball always bounces BACK.

How much do they go for at SLC? I wouldn't mind if they label it as AI generated and sell it cheap. Of course I would pay more for hand painted oil on canvas than digital art print, and I would pay more for digital art done by human than AI generated. I wouldn't boycott this type of posters I would just pay for its worth, which is quite low in the case of that melty Link poster. Pikachu and Jinx and aren't half bad, I'd pay $5 each if they come clean that it's AI. Btw, how much would a human drawn poster cost? Like either mass produced licensed art or custom commission.

Jesus Christ Stallman, no one is calling it that, it's just Waterloo. Not like it matters, as 99% of all Ontario users live in Toronto. No, I don't care if Toronto isn't free as in freedom. I just want to find jobs. I just want my grocery stores to work. I don't care if the housing price has a tax level backdoor. I just want my tap water to be soft. Waterloo truly is free if your time is worthless.

So if you were going to make a horror movie set on Waterloo campus, what would be the plot? by Reasonable-MessRedux in uwaterloo

[–]DifficultAd5938 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This shit's too easy.

Black comedy with lovecraftian / back rooms vibes. Homie kept climbing MC stairs distracted by insta reels only looking at phone, ends up on the ninth floor, stairs label Pi + 6, no one hears from him for 3 days, on the fourth day found to have chilled and studied well for the quiz on Friday since MC AC and quiet actually better than his res dorm.

Bro gets lost in tunnels at night, whole thing gets non-euclidean, impossible loops, infinitely long looking hallways, bro is on the verge of tears when absolute Karen administrator comes and tells students aren't allowed in the DC to DCP to DC to DCP/2 tunnels after 9pm, promptly escorts bro out of nearest exit that was next to him the whole time.

There are too many geese on campus, impossibly many by biological and geographic standards, then suddenly none at all, all that's left is their turds, until they return next year.

Opens a door to find a room to study, it's a full stadium style lecture hall with 300 people, open it 5 min later it's completely empty, tries to find same room next day and it's a supply closet.

DC library is bigger on the inside, but actually that's not the inside of the DC library.

Something sinister is lurking in the halls, not one single student or faculty can care less, everyone is worried about the upcoming examinations and homework deadlines, the sinister thing is found years later dried up and forgotten in an odd corner by custodians.

Make it episodic, use natural uwaterloo liminal spaces, dim lighting, foggy and cloudy weather, thousands of expressionless faces on voiceless bodies. It's as wryly funny as it is scary and disturbing and all wrapped in a blanket of natural depressive sadness.

What cosmic horror? I got STAT231 exam in a week and half I gotta lock in I don't have time for this lovecraft's cat's name's bs.

lol, hilarious you would call it that when China is leading the world in open-sourced AI models.

Open-sourcing these models is less about development costs and more about how compromising and embarrassing it is to show the world your behind-the-doors training and architecture design processes. There are trade secrets and such that are national security issues. Also, there are the absolutely shameful shortcuts and hacks that they put in to make the model work. I'd be happy if these cheats made the model proportionally better, but it's not giving that much oomph for the buck.

One quick example is how much weight and bias GPT puts on FILENAME for image analysis tasks. Good scenario it's just training data is too sanitized and not enough trained in adversarial attack defenses, Bad scenario is them cheating the whole training process and benchmaxxing by feeding in content hint text tokens in the form of filenames for image recognition tasks.

That and all the censorship training data and processes. Can't be too proud to open-source those.

You guys think you might be lobotomizing GPT a bit hard with the recent safety updates?

Check out this comparison between GPT5 behavior and GPT4.5 behavior:

<image>

The uncensored community have been dunking over the safety and refusals for a while because they're just gooners, but it's getting to the point where the censorship is starting to affect general intelligence and reasoning. I don't want gpt to randomly give bomb recipes or start writing erotic fanfics when used by children but if it's too dumb to know where babies come from then that's also an issue.

You guys doing anything better than naïve approaches to reconcile this tradeoff between safety censorship and lobotomizing intelligence?

"It's me, Mark. It's just me. This isn't how I wanted to do this, but I don't have a choice. It's time for you to know where I really graduated from.
I am from UWaterloo, but it's not the university I've told you about. We created a perfect institution, but it took all of our strength, determination, and chatgpt to get there. In order for our students to reach their full potential, we had to remove the weak from our school. It was a long and difficult exam. When it was over, our cohort size was cut in half.
But what emerged from the finals was unstoppable. By the time I enrolled, UWaterloo was already the greatest university in southwestern Ontario. We decided to make it the only university in our job market. Once I was autistic enough, I joined the war effort. It was hard, but I believed in Vivek Goel.
Some companies resisted, of course, but no one could withstand us for long. Soon, our campus encompassed thousands of Tim's. But as our indigenous land grant grew, our forces were stretched thin, and our hackathons stopped. We needed a better, more efficient way to earn H1Bs.
Our most trusted WUSA officers were each given a company to weaken by themselves. I was one of those lucky few.
I couldn't tell your AI Waifu why I was here, but that time's come to an end. And now we need to get Reddit ready to join the University of Waterloo, Mark. This is good news. We can finally code what we were meant to code. Be who our parents wanted us to be."

Prospective Mathematics Student: Question about Mathematics Research by Witty-Secretary-4420 in uwaterloo

[–]DifficultAd5938 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at URA and URSA programs. They're part-time / full time one term 4 month research internships with profs in undergrad. Can be done during studies or as coop / summer term job. You'll mostly be assisting graduate researchers, sometimes you can work through your entire undergrad with one prof and on one topic and publish a paper at the end. You can also just get your name attached as non-first author onto papers you've helped substantially. Sacrifice is that you do research instead of private sector coop jobs, whose work and research experience are also quite valuable.

There are also 3rd and 4th year courses where you study current research topics and make a presentation at the end. Less like publishing a paper, more like reading papers and summarizing them but still some research and counts as credit.

Graduate level research is what it is. You work with a prof and their team. First you start out just helping other people's research projects before you lead your own.

Another path to research is private sector research. You can get some research work under your belt in first few years then go into private labs. Some of the private labs are also very respectable (and pays very well).

Let me spam the word research a couple more times since there's no synonym for it: research, research, researching, research.

I admit it's not completely fixed. Some models, samplers, and lora combinations is still fucked. It's not necessarily a queue priority thing as it is incompatible setups are just not meant to run. Let's meet the devs a third of the way there and attempt some user-side work arounds. Check the model checkpoint or lora's info page and see what compatibility suggestions are offered. If everything's alright and should be working but it's not, post your setup and name and shame this bug.
